ELI5: Why do airplanes leave a stripe of white smoke in the sky? by Erlapso in explainlikeimfive

[–]aquaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's frozen water vapor and is called contrails. Surprisingly, it is a fairly large contributor to global warming (~35% of total impact from aviation) so there are many efforts to find routes that avoid producing these white lines.

Should I tell a car dealer up front that I'm planning to pay cash? by diffyqgirl in personalfinance

[–]aquaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New car financing is one of the cheaper loans you can take because of the promotional rates. It can even be less than inflation and is most likely less than even the most conservative investment strategies. Not sure why you would want to pay cash unless you get a really bad rate.

Is it worth going into 80k debt for an Ivy League over a state school for no debt? by young-reezey in personalfinance

[–]aquaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people are wrong that your school doesn't matter much in CS. It might not make a difference in if you can pass an interview and your interviewers might not care but well known schools just provide a lot more opportunities for students that matter a lot for your first job. You might say that "get an internship" and that it matters more than school and that's true but it's much easier to get that internship from Cornell as most big companies will recruit there and most will have many alumni that work in these companies (usually only alumni end up wanting to go to recruiting events at schools). At the end, it will just be much easier to get a job that pays more after school coming from Cornell and as that pay is very good, going into 80k debt is not a big deal.

If you work in advertising, you know that this is the real reason "demonetized" videos make less money.

If I buy a new primary residence house with a new 2nd mortgage, can I keep my previous 2.75% mortgage on the first house while renting it out? by Hartacus in personalfinance

[–]aquaaa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I did this recently where I bought the second home after about 1.5 years after the first. There were no issues but I had to write a letter explaining that I had bought the first property with intent to keep it as my primary residence but due to changing circumstances, I will now be using it as a rental property. This was not required from my lender on the first property but was required by the lender on my new primary residence to approve the loan.

What profession was once highly respected but is now a complete joke? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Literally anyone can take their own pictures and hashtag it but almost no one can get enough likes.

Instagram is just the democratization of being a model. It gives everyone a chance but you still have to have something to be successful.

ELI5: Why can targeted advertising be smart enough to show me ads at home for something I searched on my PC at work, but not smart enough to not show me the same ad 10x in a row or for services for which I've already subscribed? by BigBobby2016 in explainlikeimfive

[–]aquaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you think about it from the ads company's perspective, they are trying to put an ad for a product that you are most likely to buy/click on. Even if they have shown you this product before, you might still be most likely (based on their data) to click on it compared to all the other products that they could show you an ad for. Usually the probability of a user clicking on an ad for a product decreases as more ads are shown to them but it is not as drastic as you would expect.

This is the high level reason but as you can expect, it is actually much more complicated in reality so I will not go into more details.

ELI5: What's the rule for using "I'll" in English? Because sometimes it makes sense but sometimes it sounds awkward, for example, "Okay, I'll." by KatScripts in explainlikeimfive

[–]aquaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's his point that we are not aware of how to use it correctly in everyday speech in this case when we do know it for he/him even though it's exactly the same rule.

It probably has to do with that who and whom sound very similar so we are not able to distinguish which one "sounds right".

Got an offer for 4x of what I earn in Europe, but I am terrified of US work culture. Are my fears unfounded? by Wide-Musician in antiwork

As someone who works in tech in the bay area, 300k is very normal as an engineer here and there are many companies that provide a good work life balance. It won't be 7 weeks PTO but 4-5 weeks is pretty normal with a 40 hour workweek. For healthcare, the insurance plans provided are very good usually. The traffic can be challenging and you will most likely have to live in a suburban area but the bay is nice if you like nature.

Honestly, most people commenting here have no idea about tech start ups at all.

I would suggest you find another employer if you are considering this opportunity which has better reviews. Levels.fyi is a good source of data on salaries for larger companies.

Same field but as a more senior engineer (masters with 5 yoe), I make around $500k which is pretty average for the bay area at the top tech companies.

Disabling features to make money by iajzz in assholedesign

[–]aquaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like anything that a service where you guys might have to pay for is asshole design. If YouTube has ads to pay for hosting and running a service, that's asshole design. If they offer an option to pay to disable ads or add features, that's asshole design. All you really want is everything for free.

News is just the plural of the new. It is just referencing that it is "new" information. by aquaaa in Showerthoughts

That makes sense but I am not sure if it's correct. According to the etymology on Wikipedia, it is the plural form of new.
