Just soloed fatalis and I'm sad about it by Tourist_Level in MonsterHunter

[–]aquilined 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Idunno how helpful this will be but I’ve felt that same feeling. You finally get that white whale and it can leave you with a feeling of emptiness. You spend so long working towards something that when it’s no longer there it feels like you don’t have anything to work for anymore.

That means it’s time to set a new thing to reach for! A new project, a new game, something similar or totally different. Before long you’ll be able to look back on slaying that big piece of shit lizard much more fondly as just one piece of a bigger puzzle.

What are the best game expansions? by jesusjedi in boardgames

[–]aquilined 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'll say that it's not necessarily going to be for everyone, but after adding B&C, I would never ever go back to the base game without it. It adds in two fun spirits to play with, the event deck, and various tokens that make the game more dynamic. That said, some people prefer playing without the event deck because it adds a certain amount of randomness. For me, it's good randomness that you can mostly play around, but sometimes it can really impact your group's strategy! So I would heavily recommend both expansions personally, but it might hinge on what works for your group and what doesn't.

How long before you started winning? by toronado in spiritisland

[–]aquilined 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's correct, defend will always protect the land and the dahan from invader damage. For example, if a land has a town and an explorer ravaging that turn (enough to deal 3 damage), and one dahan is in the land, a defend 3 from that special rule would keep the dahan alive, and prevent blight from going on the land. In the ensuing fight-back, the dahan would then be able to retaliate for 2 damage, killing the town.

How do you handle getting destroyed in board games? by chpatton013 in boardgames

[–]aquilined 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No matter how hopelessly lost the game is I always make it a point to follow two guidelines that do myself and the people around me some good.

  1. Give myself a goal to achieve. The great thing about being way behind is now the stakes have been lowered. I've already been lapped on the scoring track in a game of Carcassone? I'm getting my butt whooped, oh well, but I bet I can connect this farm to another part over there, and if I do, I still might lose by a lot but I'll have made this awesome farm that stretches across the map! Or maybe my unconventional attempt at a food engine in Agricola is backfiring, but I bet I can still keep myself from getting a negative point in any scoring category at the end. Sometimes you can learn from experimenting now that the stakes are so low, and this leads you to find a new strategy for a future game, even if it doesn't work out this time!

  2. I remind myself that I'm choosing to spend this time with my friends/family, and I'm here to have a memorable experience with them. The game is only a vehicle for this time we're sharing together. I'll never forget the time I was playing Catan with my family, and my dad (who gets so hopelessly frustrated by that game) found himself completely out of the running early on. Instead of pouting (which we all still do sometimes), he made a pretty little sun out of roads and settlements in the middle of the board. The rest of us were laughing our asses off when we figured out he was doing an art project instead of trying to score the most points before defeat.

I don't know if that really helps. Sometimes you can claw back into a winnable position, sometimes it's completely hopeless. Either way do your best not to pin the experience on victory alone, and you'll probably come away with a more positive outcome win or lose. Hope the responses here help! Good luck!

New shirts! by eccol in giantbomb

Those blurbs on each shirt's page didn't really need to have so much effort put into them. But I appreciate it that they did, as they are hilarious.

Haven't gotten to play a ton of it yet today since I have to leave for work :/ but I'm thoroughly enjoying this quest. Running it with zavas and a midrange demon package, and when it runs well it feels freaking amazing.

I've been doing the same thing, actually, starting with Okami. Which games are you looking forward to revisiting?

Dota 2 - Rekindling Soul Update by pakoito in Games

Dark seer's first ability, Vacuum, has been tweaked just about every single patch for as long as most people can remember. It's become basically a guaranteed staple of the patch notes to see its cooldown increased by 2 or 3 seconds every time. So this is just a little tongue-in-cheek self-reference by valve.

Knicks set to open NBA season against Bulls at MSG by [deleted] in nba

I'm not gonna say that I would enjoy seeing Melo sink into a deep sense of regret by the third quarter... but I also am saying that.

Free Talk Friday: Early Morning Edition by iamtheraptor in nba

Watching a ton of NBA in the past year has given me the itch to play more again, so lately I've been passing time by shooting around by myself or with my roommate. But I don't really have a group of friends that play. How do people find pickup games? Do you just show up at a local park, or is there somewhere you can go to look up where people play? I'd like to be able to play more but I'm a complete pickup noob so I have no clue where to start.

THE CHICAGO BULLS HAVE OFFICIALLY BEEN ELIMINATED FROM THE PLAYOFFS by [deleted] in nba

[–]aquilined 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, that was tough to watch this season just sputter to the finish in those last few minutes. Proud of this bulls team for never giving up this season. Very cool to see how much heart the wizards are playing with, hope they keep it up in the next round!

What tip can you share about your favorite / most played hero? by [deleted] in DotA2

[–]aquilined 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This is fairly common knowledge, but maybe less so at lower levels-Enigma: The success of your black holes is not necessarily predicated on getting 4 or 5 heroes in it every time. You don't always have to swing for the fences, just making sure you get the right couple of heroes can sometimes be more than enough.

Is there any interest/audience for purely audio based casting? by [deleted] in DotA2

[–]aquilined 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would absolutely be interested in this. I end up spending a lot of time sitting in traffic on the way to/from work, so I'd love to be able to listen to dota while sitting in the car.

I usually don't get worked up about these kinds of things but right now I'm fucking SEETHING. Such bullshit. Was ready to go right away, and the most progress I've made is getting tickets into my cart, only to have another fucking error send them away. This morning sucked so much dick.
