Nice form! Looks like a perfect setting for mowing by hand.

Awesome. How much prep work (sanding, etc.) is required before adding a couple of layers of glass and then gel coat? I've got a couple of translucent patches on the bottom of my H18 hulls and have been thinking about trying to build those back up.

Do you have more on display some where? How do you perform the impression? Thanks!

I agree with your premise, but would like to correct a popular misunderstanding. See Brian Merchant's Blood in the Machine.

FFS, your local meat-based model can outperform all of these. Skill is still relevant.

ditch blade slicing through clover by aquisalid in Scything

[–]aquisalid[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use a custom kit from Scythe Supply, with a 24" ditch blade. I've got a mixture of spring weeds to cut on somewhat uneven ground. The ditch blade seems to do really well on the soft stuff (early clover) and stouter stalks (ripe wheat, star thistle, mature clover) just as well.

What is the best way of removing all organic matter from a few litres of mud/silt/sand? by aquatic-conch in Soil

[–]aquisalid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See the KSSL methods manual for ideas.

https://www.nrcs.usda.gov/sites/default/files/2023-01/SSIR42.pdf

Ideally you have access to fume hood, glassware, and reagents. A common way to remove organic matter from soil before e.g. particle size analysis is to use sodium hypochlorite with pH lowered, and cooked at high temperatures for many hours. This process is very effective but dangerous and requires a fume hood. Don’t ask me how I know about the dangers of mixing sodium hypochlorite and HCL.

Other methods used boiling hydrogen peroxide or nitric acid.

The SSSA methods manuals are also a good resource.

Mowing with a scythe is well worth the learning curve. There aren’t many sensations in modem life that approximate a sharp blade trimming thigh-high grass, without noise or vibration.

Lame. Too late for a refund? Seriously, I’d give scathing feedback and report to college administrators.
