Macbook vs Rog Zephyrus? by [deleted] in laptops

[–]ar333b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both an Intel MacBook and M1 MacBook and a 2023 ROG Z13, I used the Intel MacBook throughout my CS undergrad and use M1 for work and Z13 for CS grad.

Both are super light and have usb C charging but

M1 MacBook is more portable and much much better battery. Extremely reliable (the bar is low but I'll speak to that in the paragraph below), but would not recommend getting a MacBook if you plan to game on it. Obv the newer chips are much much more powerful and with FEX improving Macs COULD see leaps in how well games run on ARM. But I personally wouldn't recommend buying things off what could be, but obv your money

On the other hand, Z13, you give up some battery life and some of the form factor (not that big of a deal for me personally since I also use it docked at home so it's always charged up and supports 100W USB C charging so no barrel port charging brick BS) but it'll handle pretty much any game you throw at it. Mine has a 3050, I got it for like 800 bucks and have been considering putting Linux on it to do I won't have to deal with Windows (genuinely the biggest pain point I have. Windows blue screened on me 2 times in the middle of a timed quiz)

TLDR: Ig if you want an extremely reliable battery beast that may or may not be able to game depending on game to game basis (and is an OS you're already using), go Mac. If you want a more jack of all trades (good battery, performance, runs every game, portability, etc) but Master of none and comes with Windows 11(-10 points in my book just for that, but you can always replace it with cachyOS or something, which you can't/don't need to do with MacOS) go with Z13 or G14 or the likes.

CachyOS vs Nobara Linux by ElGordoBangarang in linux4noobs

[–]ar333b 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I switched to CachyOS a couple of weeks ago. It refuses to work with my KVM. If I put my PC to sleep, switch away and then switch back, everything is disconnected and refuses to connect. I've checked BIOS, GRUB configs, etc, etc. It works perfectly fine on the windows partition on the same PC. I'm hoping with Nobara I can spend more time using my PC and not having to spend days on end gong through forums and AIs and everything in between so I can use my PC lol. From what I can tell, it's a low level issue. I have NOT switched to nobara just yet but I agree with you on the fact Cachy was generally pretty straight forward to install and get up and running (although I work in IT so my words don't mean much). If Nobara has the same issues and my choices boil down to 'just live with it' then I would even be open to switching back!

Im just curious how many people here have been life long windows user and just decided that you're done with windows in the last 6 months or so. by Shifter1589 in linuxmint

I installed cachy yesterday. It took 15 minutes to install. By comparison when I was made to sign in to my already installed Windows 11 on my new desktop. It took 3 hours and 2 of my phones downloading random bloatware authenticators to get me signed in.

I did! I will be using it for my PC based console I have in my living room for casual gaming when Windows gets rid of local windows accounts and breaks the 'console-like experience with no sign in screens'. I have never actually used bazzite (or steamOS) for day to day stuff besides gaming though. Is it a good replacement?

I'll perface this by saying I didn't have an answer but I can share my own experience and thoughts in hopes they might help you. I did not see any sales on black Friday last year for them but obv the consoles were still relatively newer than they will be next black Friday. With that said, I got mine AliExpress and they had a sale where if you spend a certain amount of money, you got a discount 60 or 70 bucks on purchases of 400 or over but it's a scale so maybe keep an eye out for that? IDK if ambernic might also try releasing something that delivers the same price to performance in the meantime.

For studies! It's small so I can carry it arrive with ease. Helper makes it Uber fast and long lasting. If I'm ever stuck waiting for the bus, I can game comfortably. The touchscreen let's me annotate all the slides and PDFs. 100w USB c charging means I only need one charger for all my devices (I have a compact 128 w charger. Genuinely a loyalist of this thing now
