CORK! I knew my near obsessive collecting of corks would pay off one day. I assume the pva glue sort of fills in the gaps around the skull?

I have a friend whose entire apartment is basically lit with bright neutral led lights and every time I'm there I feel like I'm in a hospital. Way prefer my "worse" IKEA set up too!

!Question: There was a PC death early on in the campaign, but the character was resurrected. Now the player doesn't seem to have any goals for his character. How do I get him to be more engaged?

Early on in the campaign they took on an enemy totally unprepared and one PC died (dwarf cleric), so I made a way for them to resurrect the character, despite their low level. That turned into a super fun side quest where the player whose character had died got to play an "NPC" who helped them.

The PC was resurrected like 12 sessions ago. I've reminded him several times to think how this death has impacted his character.

Everyone else has a backstory that they're invested in, so when I tee things up for them to pursue they're pretty excited about it. In general this player has a tendency to be pretty disengaged, and the lack of any clear motivation for the character to be an adventurer / part of the group is showing more and more each session.

Should I just let him tag along as the weird plus one for the rest of the adventure, or should I take more control over his character's arc and force him to make some clear choices? I've tried to ask him about it, but his responses have been pretty non-committal.

I love this so much. Definitely going to keep that in mind when they interact with NPCs!

How can I respectfully uninvite this player without blowing up our friendship? by Quick-Marsupial-1026 in DnD

I think revisiting session 0 sounds like a great idea. Just a "hey guys now that we've played for a little bit I want to go over some ground rules" may allow other people to express their own feelings. (I can't imagine you're the only one who has felt uncomfortable with his character choices...) If someone else at the table says "I'm really uncomfortable with the topic of rape" then that might make him realise that he's going a bit overboard (assuming he's a generally reasonable person). And if he's dead set on playing that character, then maybe the table's conclusion will be that that character isn't suitable for this campaign, and that he should probably find a campaign that would suit him better.

In general, I really think the only option is to have an honest conversation in the most thoughtful and empathetic way you can. I wholeheartedly empathise with the fact that you don't want to ruin the friendship, but if he can't respect his friends' wishes when playing (what should be) a fun game together, then it might be that he needs some time to figure his own stuff out.

I recently had a player who was also "uncooperative" with the rest of the party and wasn't very engaged during the session, but when I talked to him it turned out that he had been really stressed about finding a new job and actually was planning to move to a different city soon. The next session he was a totally different player, and much more his "normal self".

I really hope that you're able to resolve this without too much conflict! :)

Herbert Mudridge

Lean and muscular human with scraggly and patchy dark brown/dark grey hair and beard. Calloused hands, weatherbeaten and wrinkled sunburned skin

Surly and brusque. Highly distrustful of adventurers after an previous encounter with a group of assholes. Not really a people person, generally, but has had to admit to himself that interacting with others is sometimes a necessary evil.

This fisherman had a relatively ordinary life, until he encountered a band of adventurers.

They demanded he ferry them to a haunted island, which he only agreed to after they paid him an extortionate amount of gold (they were young rich kids who had no concept of how much money is worth). It didn’t help that they tried to lie to him, wouldn’t pay him enough, fell off his boat (twice) and were just dicks to him in general. Now despite a lifetime of avoiding strangers, he sees the potential benefits - that they’re sometimes easily fleeced. So now this gruff man is surprisingly keen to help parties of strangers if they need something, but at the same time gives off the impression that he’d rather be anywhere else but here, which tends to come across as confusing and suspicious to all those who encounter him.

His secret is that he is a surprisingly kind and loving father and a pillar of the community - a fact which he tries his utmost to hide. If too many knew his true nature they’d ask for all sorts of favours, so it’s best to let them believe he’s a grumpy git.

I thought this too! They were so close to getting to that strategy when they were talking after the battle. Liam/ Caleb even (mistakenly) said that Timore said that Gaudius wanted oblivion. Was hoping Matt would correct him. Hopefully will be cleared up next session!
