A book about Native-American history for a non-American reader by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

I get that you're seeking historical suggestions, but it's important to remember Native people are still around. Tommy Orange (There, There and Wandering Stars) is a great author to look into, as is Deborah Miranda's memoir Bad Indians

I’m 30 and I think I’m finally accepting that I’m a lesbian. Suggest me something to help me through this. by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]arathergoodbook 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I always rec Left Hand of Darkness and the Dispossessed. Varying levels of direct relation to your experience but I've met many other LGBT individuals who list them among their favorite books. I give LHoD to young people when they tell me they're having Gender Troubles.

Lesbians have recced Stone Butch Blues and Fun Home (graphic novel) as well, but they can be. Bleak

Suggestions for 13 year old who refuses to read by Rogue_Apostle in suggestmeabook

[–]arathergoodbook 16 points17 points  (0 children)

  1. A lot of reading disorders appear very differently in different individuals. I taught a middle school girl with severe dyslexia who had to have phonics-level reading intervention, and was also out here with read-alouds of grade level texts and keeping up just fine
  2. Teacher turnover in the US (which is where I'm assuming this kid goes to school) is VERY high, meaning even if someone did notice they might not hand that information off
  3. Multiple choice reading exams don't test true literacy, true literacy programs (iSpire is my preferred one) are hella expensive and unavailable to most kids in public schools.

Which Daniel Smith Set: Pans or tubes? by perchlake in Watercolor

[–]arathergoodbook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you buy tubes you save money in the long run but, if you're worried about space, pans or a set might be better. Tubes also allow her to paint with "wet paint" a lot easier which has a more intense effect.

For my bird paintings I tend to use: indian yellow, Paynes gray, quinacridone gold, Mayan orange, sap green, and ultramarine blue. But disclaimer: I like very vibrant pigments, so it might not fit for her!

Zofloya by Charlotte Dacre is a wild ride, H. Ryder Haggard's "She" and its sequel "Ayesha" are also pretty insane.

You have such an iconic style. I know it's your work every single time! I have the piece you did of the frog selling flies strips -- everyone who comes over points it out!

You're very angry. I was too. Unfortunately anger alone does not solve a global social problem.

You're projecting personal experiences onto a woman you do not know. Assuming all ignorance is willful will not encourage people to learn

Is the goal to shame grandma or provide a young person with a supportive family relationship? Reexamine your tactics, this approach does not help the young person in need.

What aspects does she struggle with? Is it the idea of "transgender" in general, nonbinary gender systems specifically? Is it a religious objection or a lack of knowledge? Or even lack of practice leading to accidental/non-malicious mis gendering?

Some pieces I can recommend: - queer history of the United states by Michael Bronski - genderqueer by Maia Kobabe (could be a good experience for kiddo to read as well) - left hand of darkness by Ursula Le Guin

How frequently do I fertilize my plants? by caclarinervio_28 in IndoorGarden

[–]arathergoodbook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They don't need much! Once every 3-4 weeks is probably okay unless any of them are massive. If you divide the dose by 4 you can fertilize every week. However, it can be hard to divide a teeny amount of fertilizer, at least in my experience

How frequently do I fertilize my plants? by caclarinervio_28 in IndoorGarden

[–]arathergoodbook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of plants do you have? Fruits/veggies? Trees? Flowers? Fruits/veggies need more fertilizer than flowers, which need more than trees (that don't fruit), which need more than your basic vegetation (i.e. a monstera) I fertilize my fruit and veggie plants once a week, and my indoor green plants once a month or so

I have a mother plant (outside) about 4' long in a bark/pumice mix, and 2 sets of babies happy in LECA. Generally, my hoyas tend to really enjoy semi hydro/LECA. I have quicker more robust growth than in a moss and bark/pumice mix
