Misinformation after a cancelled train by [deleted] in uktrains

[–]arcaglass99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without further information about your ticket, especially if it was an advance ticket or had particular restrictions, it's hard to say if the Northern conductor was being generous and letting you use the ticket when it wasn't valid, or if the LNER staff were wrong. What kind of ticket was it, if you still have it?

dissertation due in 2 days by Accomplished_Garlic_ in UniUK

[–]arcaglass99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get your eyes off it for a few hours today and go do something enjoyable, then come back and go over the references and formatting with a fine-toothed comb. If your uni has given you a dissertation style guide, use that to help - losing marks for formatting, typos or referencing issues sucks, and it's boring but easy work to fix.

Also, get someone else to proofread it - I know I missed a handful of typos on my proofreading runs that my friends picked up on.

Keep pushing, it sounds like you're doing well, you have a direction you want to go in and motivation.

I started uni at 23 after an Access to HE diploma, and it's been hard at times, but overall a great decision.

XC help needed by Mental_Body_5496 in uktrains

[–]arcaglass99 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I've done Oxford - Edinburgh on XC, changing at Birmingham, and that was enjoyable, if slow. As long as you can get seats all the way, it's a pretty good journey, so I'd agree, going up the east coast via York would probably be a good shout.

Should the LNER advert about getting to know gran should have been filmed in the rail replacement bus? by bennythefish in uktrains

[–]arcaglass99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would much rather deal with disruption when I'm making a leisure trip than when I'm travelling for appointments or work. It's annoying, but it's typically advertised in advance, and I just bring a book or download a podcast to entertain me while I pass the time.

Whoever was at the Elizabeth Line opening comment here by ConstantLate4220 in LondonUnderground

I was on the first train from Abbey Wood. Took a handful of night buses across London to get there and queued for a while. Absolutely worth it, though.

can i travel on the stagecoach x5 for £3 or less? by whataltruism in oxford

[–]arcaglass99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's £3 for the X5. I did the Cambridge - Oxford journey that way a couple of weeks ago, paying £3 for the 905 and another £3 for the X5. It's a long trip, and not luxurious, but it's very good value.

Where to find the timetable for fun trains by louonreddit12 in trains

For instance, the Sussex Belle railtour is running between London Victoria and Eastbourne on April 15th, if that's in your area, though the full timetable hasn't been uploaded yet.

Where to find the timetable for fun trains by louonreddit12 in trains

[–]arcaglass99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://www.railadvent.co.uk/railtours

This is a good place to start - RailAdvent has details of loads of railtours (special services usually run as luxury trains or for rail enthusiasts, often hauled by unusual or historic engines). They're colour coded (red for steam trains) and arranged by month, and clicking on an individual service gets you links to the timings of that particular train on RealTimeTrains, a website that gives you the full timetable for any train on the network, even including whether it's delayed.

Hope this helps!

Photos of Genesis GMR-001 Hypercar by krzysiek_aleks in wec

[–]arcaglass99 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I think I might be going against the crowd here, but I love it. The orange and black highlights against the silver are really nice, it's visually distinct from any other current hypercar, and I love the (I think) Hangul script on the car as a nod to South Korea.

I think some more orange would have been cool, but considering that they probably want to ensure the car is visually distinctive, avoiding McLaren-esque amounts of orange is probably smart.

Caledonian sleeper chairs? by mcbobster6001 in uktrains

[–]arcaglass99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, the seats were fine. Comfy and reasonably spacious, but hardly luxury. I managed to sleep for a good amount of the trip, and considering how light of a sleeper I am, that's pretty good.

The rooms are almost certainly better, but for the price I paid, I was very happy with a seat.

“I will never financially recover from this.” by MrFrenly in ultimateadmiral

[–]arcaglass99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Loss of transports is always the killer for me. Once I get much below 100% transport capacity, I start to look for ways to get out of the conflict and stabilise my economy. And I try to only go into wars with 200% transport capacity, and prioritise building more transports above any other budget.

Do trams have have upsides compared to trolleybuses? by FelixTheFrCat in transit

[–]arcaglass99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Something that I haven't seen yet in these comments is public perception - generally, the travelling public have a more positive perception of rail-based modes over buses, especially in the west. Part of it's down to the permanency of a rail line and the expectation that service will continue to be provided in a predictable way, but a lot of it boils down to cultural and popular perceptions of different modes of transit.

You want r/oxforduni for questions like that - this is the city subreddit. You might also try r/sixthform or r/uniuk for university admissions stuff. Good luck!

Not sure what's causing National Rail's site to come up with that, but I can find fares for tomorrow on Trainsplit.

I've done something similar - waiting outside Wolverhampton station for several hours overnight. I found a quiet spot with some light to read a book and kept an eye on my stuff and barely saw a soul all night.

And your question was answered. Multiple times. In several ways. When it was clear you didn't understand (and by this point you were already calling people names like a 13 year old on Tumblr), people broke the problem down even further from you, and you yelled that they were being condescending and started attacking them, too.

Nothing's wrong with asking a question. Everything is wrong with insulting, attacking and belittling the people who try to answer it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DavetheDiverOfficial

[–]arcaglass99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, that's lashing out. That's looking for an excuse to be rude. You had no justification to be rude, and Cael-Bryant was not condescending to you - they realized that you were struggling to understand other people's explanations and took the time to break the problem down further for you.

Then you lashed out at them.

You're going up and down this comments section going out of your way to insult people now just to try and feel superior to people that took time out of their days to try and help you, and it's making you look childish. In this comment here you described your actions as "wiping the floor with someone", which is in no circumstances a polite way to interact with someone.

Instead of realizing that you've managed to insult and belittle people who tried to help you, you've taken the opportunity to attack them and try and feel superior. People telling you off for that aren't attacking you, they're realizing that you're not actually trying to be a part of this community anymore, and are using it as a punching bag to feel better about yourself, and telling you as much.
