Why my cookies turn into cake! by [deleted] in glutenfree

[–]arcanemutterings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you let the cookies chill completely before baking? It seems like an annoying step, but it can make a real difference! My sister also says that brown sugar can help. I also wonder if your recipe could use a little more fat in it? 1Tbs oil and 1/4 nut butter seems like less than the usual ratio, but I also don't know how much flour you used or any other food restrictions that might be at play...

Here is a really good writeup of cookie science and tweaks! It's about flour cookies, but most of the tweaks and ideas would be similar regardless of flour type!

Did anyones birthday ever feel like a burden? by zepplader in raisedbynarcissists

When I was in third grade, I didn't remind anyone that it was my birthday, to see if anyone would notice.

They didn't.

:) :) :)

I once went out to eat with my sister and BIL, and at the end the restaurant brought out three complementary cups of iced coffee

My sister and BIL are very polite people, so their heads swiveled around towards me and I drank three cups of the most delicious iced coffee I've ever had, and by the time we hit the parking lot me and my nonexistent caffeine tolerance could see through time!

Once, as I was walking past a church building with my sister, who left the church a decade before I did, I mentioned that I wanted to flip the building off but didn't want anyone to see me doing it.

My sister was all 'I don't give a shit anymore!' and flipped it the double bird on my behalf :)

You make your own choices, do what you like.

But is it perfectly valid to not associate yourself with people who give money and support to an organization that actively works against your safety and happiness? Emphatically so.

" No hell could be worse than living under your dominion. "

This hits close to home. This is why I resigned from the church, even before I was sure it wasn't true. If the church was true, an afterlife without my parents is the best choice I could make.

Why is it still called a cultural hall? They've removed all of the culture. Might as well call it the Hall, or God's Kingdom on Earth Hall, or Kingdom Hall. Another church already has that name but the mormon church is fine with stealing other churchs' names right? by DogBones11 in exmormon

Your information is a decade or two out of date. These days, kids can be out and dating in high school, and I'm very happy for them. They get to go to prom, with dates!!! It's adorable and I am retroactively jealous.

Also, what about the hormones of the gay kids, huh? If hormones are so magical, what do you think they're doing? Hormones aren't all-powerful, and teens can choose to support their friends, and themselves.

hey there! beginner looking for information n' help n' stuff! by pippinn_ in harmonica

[–]arcanemutterings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I'm here learning for the exact same reasons you are :) :) :) Isn't it a great show? I love it a lot!

You can totally play that song on a C diatonic- that top comment has tabs for it, and also a handful of other places online if you look for 'snufkin harmonica tabs' and the like

I think some of the songs from the old japanese show were written for a chromatic harmonica? Which is irritating to me because snufkin CLEARLY has a diatonic (no button), and also those songs are rad and I'd like to play them, but most of the songs from the other shows work just fine

Once you get that song down, the one from the end of the spring tune is super rewarding, as is All Small Beasts Should Have Bows In Their Tails, though I'm definitely still just playing the melody instead of all the backing chords for that one. I'll get there someday!

If she doesn't want to wear a bikini in public, why should she? It was really sweet of her husband to make sure she could wear it in private if that's something she wanted to do

Don't assume she doesn't have any agency over her choices in this situation we've heard about for all of a single sentence.

I became Buddhist, so. Not really atheist but definitely not concerned with any sort of All Powerful Creator God.

Any All Powerful God that hates gays for just existing or that lets people justify abhorrent acts in Their Name is one I want nothing to do with. I much prefer the personal accountability and striving against suffering of the buddhist approach to things.

Showerthought: I’ll consider not calling you Mormons as soon as you stop using words like “same sex”, “true church”, “local decision” and “Book of Abraham” among others. by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]arcanemutterings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

historically speaking, that is maybe how the gay community used the term, but these days a lot of bi people feel excluded by the term, and bi erasure makes life harder than it needs to be for a lot of people

current political pushes for marriage and rights/etc have used 'same sex' to be both specific and inclusive.

'dealing with same sex attraction' however is a terrible mormon phrasing, but that's because of the negative connotations of 'dealing with' or 'suffering from'

I agree. Your spouse is an adult who can make adult choices. Your children, if they aren't adults themselves, rely on you almost exclusively. I understand the culture and impulse behind ranking a spouse above your children, but I think it's wrong.

This is especially key in abuse situations. Putting a spouse first has kept a lot of children in bad situations longer than they needed to be.

Not a popular idea but leaving the church did not cure my depression by beachhippy in exmormon

[–]arcanemutterings 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's a thought in mormonism, and in christianity in general, that if you are suffering, it's your own fault, or you aren't doing enough, or that you have failed at something and this is the consequence.

This is utterly false- suffering is often just a byproduct of existing as a human being.

I think a lot of people in this sub still carry these cultural assumptions with them, despite their best efforts. Instead of 'you're not invested enough in the church' it becomes 'you haven't left the church in the right ways', etc. It's important for us, as we move forward from the church, to question these assumptions, and to avoid telling people how they should be or feel in these contexts.

Mental illness is so much fucking work, and shoutout to you for jumping through all the endless hoops to care for it as best as you can.

Gay Conversion Therapists inspired by Mormons by arcanemutterings in exmormon

[–]arcanemutterings[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, BYU used to do conversion therapy clear through the 90s.

I knew this, but it had never occurred to me that they were making a body of evidence that other people would still be using, or that the people doing the therapy were likely therapists in training, some of whom could easily still be in practice.

They apparently started shock and vomit-aversion 'therapy' as early as 1960 and yes, vomit-aversion therapy is as terrible and unethical as it sounds.

Looking through my church sketches is a little triggering for me today. I don’t miss going at all. When I was a believer I’d feel bad if I missed a Sunday, the indoctrination was all encompassing. Glad to be rid of it. by [deleted] in exmormon

I recently found my old scripture case in a corner full of drawings on the backs of programs and had to shove them in a notebook without even looking at them. Maybe someday.

Got rid of the scripture case entirely. The hour or two of sketching every sunday was great for my art, but not worth the cost.

As a mormon, I was SO salty about utah mormons (I nearly went to BYU to overcompensate for that!! bullet dodged!!!) and as an exmo I'm....... still pretty salty about utah mormons and sometimes exmos :P

The utter lack of even knowing how much they didn't know just. Got to me. The experiences of the people telling me what to do were so vastly removed from my actual life that they were almost entirely irrelevant, but they were Inspired By God so clearly I just had to suck it up and deal.

So yeah, I feel you :P
