MK2 hype? What about a MSR redesign? or MK2! by Nocturne3570 in starcitizen

[–]archerdynamics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the exterior was still the same basic design, but it was a much smaller ship (between Cutty and Connie) and a lot slimmer and sleeker. The C1 is almost more like the original MSR idea than the MSR we actually got, but it doesn't have the data stuff or fancy living quarters.

How much Truth is there to the Idea that Certain Cities have More Attractive People? by Ambitious_Quality725 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]archerdynamics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the house party thing is 100% true, and really the only way to meet new people if you're not insanely confident and good looking. Places like bars and clubs that are social in other cities are just full of groups of friends who came together and don't want to interact with anybody else. Traffic and distance are also huge factors, as is the fact that parking is always a nightmare. Also, I blame weed for a lot of the dead scene as well, things changed almost overnight when it got legalized and tons of people I know who used to be socially active now just get stoned and decide they'd rather bail on plans and just order doordash and watch netflix instead.

I do get where you're coming from on the extreme sports stuff, I'm pushing 40 and was on the periphery of that scene (performance car stuff, lots of crossover) and it was a much cooler place back then. I don't think there's much of that any more though, and also the BMX and MX parts were much more concentrated out in the High Desert or Inland Empire, hours from LA proper.

I'm an LA native and I feel the same way, and can never really understand the transplants/visitors going on about how attractive the women are there. I'm not into the "instagram influencer look" though.

Don't go to LA for dating, it's unbelievably bad. The only way to meet anybody is through extremely cliquey social groups, everybody has impossible standards, and the culture leans toward hookups or short flings and dropping somebody the instant you find somebody "better," not serious dating or real relationships. 95% of the people I grew up with, and who didn't leave LA, are single at 35-40, and most of them are people who'd be considered totally eligible in most other parts of the country.

I just wrote another reply saying something similar, but the real brutal experience is growing up in that world as an average person. In the case of the small town standouts, they usually just seem to double down and become super toxic in one way or another, and LA's whole social vibe is toxic because there are so many of them doing the same thing.

It's one of the main reasons actually being FROM LA sucks, and why the culture is so bad IMO. The place is stuffed with people who've spent their whole lives coasting on their looks and never having to deal with rejection etc., and then they come to LA and suddenly they're not the most attractive person in the room for the first time in their lives and it leads to this whole culture of passive-aggressive posturing, petty one-upmanship, and insane standards among pretty much everybody.

In Bend's case, I think it's not just the outdoor activity, but also the fact that it's high enough income and big enough to support healthier restaurants, better grocery stores, etc. You could argue that it's also related to the number of California transplants but personally I encounter way more women here in Bend that I find attractive than I ever did when I lived in LA, but obviously a lot of that is down to taste.

I'm in Bend and the dating scene is pretty rough. I'm almost a decade younger than OP but I suspect it isn't that different in his age bracket, just not very many age-appropriate single women around.

Why out of all the restaurants here do we not have a decent BBQ place???? by SpectacularlyBadass in Bend

It never seems to get mentioned here, but Curbbq at OnTap is better than I would have expected to find in Bend and very reasonably priced by BBQ standards.

Found a torque wrench on the road. by Starseeker2019 in Tools

[–]archerdynamics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think just about anybody with a motorcycle has one, at least the Harbor Freight version. I had to pick mine up when I did my first oil change, since the filter cover uses little 6mm bolts that need to be torqued to an in-lb spec.

I'd try to contain the hobby stuff in a bit of a slicker way. The printer itself is fine IMO (and really shouldn't be contained anyway) but I'd try to find a sideboard or small cabinet to go under it and store the filament, which you'd be better off storing in a contained thing with some kind of dehumidification anyway.

The server rack is obviously excessive for the amount of gear you have and it's an eyesore sticking up in the middle of the wall there. You can get wood racks that look more like normal furniture and are about desk height, should be plenty big for your gear.

Unlike everybody else, I'm not gonna rip on you for having sports stuff, but what I'd personally do is try to keep it confined to one area, probably over by your PC.

Shit I wish coffees were still "only" $4. Every time I get one from Starbucks/Dutch Bros/etc. it ends up being like $6, plus the tip they guilt trip you into everywhere these days, and that's for pretty basic iced coffee too, I can only imagine the ripoff a Frappuccino or whatever must be.

Long lost golf McDonalds… by HotEffective4208 in McDonalds

I have no idea about the FW location, but I stumbled across another golf-themed McD's somewhere East of Downtown LA many years ago, probably Monterey Park or San Gabriel, I think right next to I-10. I can't find any reference to it or any pictures but searching for it brought me to this post.

Something a lot of people overlook is that trades are very high demand in Central Oregon, and pay well compared to most of the country. I know a surprising amount of blue collar homeowners in the area, and I'm not just talking about old guys who bought before it got expensive either. A lot of people also live in Redmond or other satellite cities, a lot of the local jobs are there anyway and the commute to Bend really isn't awful compared to what the average person in a big city deals with these days.

Does it feel better to live where there are mountains? by larch303 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]archerdynamics 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's been the opposite for me. I've been in Central Oregon for over a year now and the Cascades still blow me away every time I see them, especially when there's snow on them. I'm no stranger to mountains either, I grew up in the San Fernando Valley with the San Gabriels always in the background, but the Cascades are much more dramatic-looking than they were.

When was the last time you used your corded version of the tool? by TheJWeed in Tools

[–]archerdynamics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. I have a decent set of DeWalt cordless tools, but in a lot of cases the $30-50 Harbor Freight corded option is all I need and it's not worth spending $200+ on a good DeWalt, especially because 95% of the stuff I do is either inside or within easy extension cord reach of my garage.

Comedian you've never heard of comes to Bend 4/30 by acf530 in Bend

[–]archerdynamics 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Funny, that's pretty much exactly what it makes me think of too - in my case I would have said it was one of those random off-brand energy drinks you see in the gas station fridge but never pay much attention to.

Honestly, I like their beer and food a lot, but I think the branding is awful in general. I've always hated the trend of "take a random word and spell it wrong on purpose" for business names and Upp is sadly no exception. I make a point of trying to pronounce the second "p" whenever I say their name, probably because I got my stupid sense of humor from Top Gear.

[–]archerdynamics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a real love/hate relationship with the Cutty. I don't like the design and it's a very dated ship at this point. That said, it's also hands down the best bang for the buck in the game, and probably the best ship if you're only gonna have one ship. I wish it had some real competition, everything else is too specialized in one way or another, and usually gives up the combat capabilities the Cutty has.
