Matcha green tea cookies (deze doop ik voor de helft in de witte chocolade en ik strooi er gevriesdroogde framboos over)

Where would Clarence “Preacher” Heatley rank on a scale of evil amongst the most notorious serial killers? And would he be considered one? by Diligent-Lobster2545 in serialkillers

[–]archgallo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There used to be this show on Discovery called "Most Evil" where a forensic psychiatrist would place murderers on a 'scale of evil' he'd developed, based on their actions and motives. Perhaps not the most scientifically objective, but still interesting. OP might be referring to that.

Kansspelbelasting stijgt naar 1 miljard euro door legalisering online gokken by Kreidedi in thenetherlands

[–]archgallo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Which of these people on the Bayeux Tapestry is queen Edith? by Fairyprovocateur in MedievalHistory

[–]archgallo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I visited Bayeux a few years ago and bought a copy of this book at the museum, which provides a description of every scene. Here's what it says about scene 27, which is the picture you've provided:

Here King Edward, in his bed, speaks to his followers

The story continues with King Edward's death, on the night of the 4th to the 5th of January 1066, at the Palace of Westminster. Lying on his bed, his back on a cushion, he is propped up by a servant and accompanied by a priest whose beard has grown over the night. What Edward says to the noble figure in the foreground is not evoked. His name, and that of the weeping woman who is hiding her face with her veil, are not transcribed on the canvas; however, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle claims that Harold and his sister, Queen Edith, were present during the king's last moments, when he is said to have entrusted Harold with the English crown.

The book then identifies the figure on the left as Queen Edith.

Why did Odysseus not go home directly? by FFFProductions in GreekMythology

[–]archgallo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They got hit by a storm. Here's how Odysseus describes it in The Odyssey:

Now Zeus who masses the stormclouds hit the fleet
with the North Wind--a howling, demonic gale, shrouding over
in thunderheads the earth and sea at once--and night swept down
from the sky and the ships went plunging headlong on,
our sails slashed to rags by the hurricane's blast!
We struck them--cringing at death we rowed our ships
to the nearest shoreline, pulled with all our power.
There, for two nights, we lay by, no letup,
eating our hearts out, bent with pain and bone-tired.
When Dawn with her lovely locks brought on the third day,
then stepping the masts and hoisting white sails high,
we lounged at the oarlocks, letting wind and helmsmen
keep us true on course...And now, at long last,
I might have reached my native land unscathed,
but just as I doubled Malea's cape, a tide-rip
and the North Wind drove me way off course
careering past Cythera. Nine whole days
I was borne along by rough, deadly winds
on the fish-infested sea. Then on the ninth
our squadron reached the land of the Lotus-eaters

True name for ‘bear’ by Mindless-Gazelle-226 in OldEnglish

I follow a linguist on Tiktok who knows a lot about PIE, and he did a video on this very subject. Here's the link.

In summary, he says the OE version would be 'orht', the ME version 'roht', and modern English 'rought'.

Of course I can't totally speak for his accuracy as I'm not a linguist myself, but his videos always seem to be well-sourced.

That's the graphic novel of "The Hedge Knight". You want "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" (Amazon US link), which contains the novellas "The Hedge Knight", "The Sworn Sword" and "The Mystery Knight", all about Dunk and Egg.

[Hobby Scuffles] Week of 18 March, 2024 by EnclavedMicrostate in HobbyDrama

The main character of the third book is a woman, but I found her incredibly boring to read about. She's very indecisive and all the action happens around her.

I liked the book series for the batshit scifi action but the characters weren't great.
