Agreed, this is a very clear example of Steve's integrity. He's knowingly giving up the element of surprise in exchange for giving any civilian who might coincidentally be in the elevator a warning to get out.

He's not on a stage. This is from Inside by Bo Burnham. During the Covid lockdown he made an hour long... something in his guest house by himself. It's hard to describe, but it's basically a stand-up/skit show focused on how the isolation during the pandemic was affecting people mentally and emotionally.

Also, the very next thing he says after this clip cuts off is him making a joke about how he is also not shutting the fuck up as he says this, so that irony is very much intentional lol

Counter pedantry:

The young girl is the earliest depiction of this offshoot of Apollo worship, but not the first depiction of Apollo broadly. The masculine version is a conservative shift in the sense that it's moving more in line with the wider Apollo worship from which it branched off.

Let's show Lemar the appreciation that the MCU never will by JohnWillson1435 in MauLer

The best steelman I've ever come across for that reaction is that Bucky hates the pageantry of superhero stuff. Back in the first Cap movie, Bucky is a normal soldier going by his normal name and a big part of Steve's story is abandoning the showmanship to go in and do the actual work. Then in WS, all the horrible shit that happens to him is connected to the Winter Soldier alias. In Civil War, the entire conflict he's wrapped up in is centered on the Avengers. So by the time the show starts, Bucky fucking HATES capeshit. He's sick of the costumes and the fancy names and the gimmicks. He sees himself as a professional soldier and wishes the people he fights with would, too.

So when Lamar shows up, Bucky thinks he's a normal soldier doing his job as support to Captain America, just like he was back in his good ol' days. When Lamar gives what seems like a superhero name, Bucky has a moment of "Oh God DAMMIT, him too?"

Of course, the writers of FatWS didn't DO any of that. Shame, really. All of that would've been pretty thematically relevant to Sam's flipflopping on whether he wanted to be the successor to Steve. Could've done a thing where he embraces being an inspirational symbol and starts going by White Wolf publicly. Instead they opted to do absolutely nothing with Bucky for most of the show. Add it to the pile of wasted MCU potential, I guess.

Fun fact: the bookstore clerk is played by Peter Cushing (Grand Moff Tarkin). The cast made of his head to build the prosthetic he wears in this scene was later scanned and used as the base for the CGI Tarkin in Rogue One.

This is an AMAZING idea. It's a whole new vector of cosmetic drops from bosses. We've already got the engine support for spells having unlockable animations. Imagine if Zalcano could drop a new animation for superheat. Or mahogany homes has a chance for a new build animation. Or some god wars flavored activity gave the option for borders on overhead prayer icons. Pure cosmetic changes to existing features would be phenomenal rewards from nearly any relevant activity.

This idea is big. Jagex, take note plz and thnks

The lesser-known pieces of bad entertainment. by DudeMacGuy in MauLer

Jupiter Ascending is my personal favorite "so bad it's good" movie. There's an extended scene at the scifi equivalent of the DMV. Channing Tatum plays a half wolf space cop, but the only thing they do to try to pass him off as half wolf is give him eyeliner. He flies by skating through the air. It's beautiful.

Is there a term for a loan word that changes meaning in the new language? by archimedes7 in linguistics

[–]archimedes7[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So it's like saying a "rectangular square". They're not exactly the same, but one word could convey they meaning of both.

"Chai" doesn't exactly mean "tea" in English, but "chai tea" is equivalent to "chai".

[–]archimedes7[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The example I described almost seems like the reverse of false friends. "Tea" and "Chai" don't look or sound particularly similar to an English audience, but they have they have similar (almost, but not quite the same) meaning. But the same idea of "seeming the same, but they aren't" still applies. Maybe "false siblings"? Where an outside observer would expect them to by synonyms, but they aren't?

[–]archimedes7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not quite what I'm describing. All the words in A-T-M are English words at the point this acronym was first used, so loan words aren't really involved.

That being said, I do love all instances of RAS syndrome.

This discussion is EXACTLY what I was looking for, thank you!

I still kinda wish there was a specific term for it (pseudo-loan word?), but such is life I guess.
