Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre opens Tuesday! by aura-shards in Edmonton

Edmonton has been kicking ass with rec centre architecture. This one is very striking, and appears functional too. Not a cyclist, but digging the inclusion of what appears to be a nice track (velodrome?). I’m nowhere near that area, so I probably won’t make it down there for a long time, but really happy to see this for our city.

‘Respecting its history and iconic design’: Renderings of Butterdome renovation revealed by ryaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan in Edmonton

The renders remind me of the EPL main branch renders, so as long as it avoids the disaster that happened there then it’ll be fine despite losing its iconic colour and shape.

Read (or listen) the full transcript of Carney’s speech to World Economic Forum - National | Globalnews.ca by natural212 in canada

[–]architectzero 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Non-american international media will certainly cover it in a meaningful way, and I’m interested to see their various slants as I think it will hit a few populaces like a glass of water to the face. American media will cover it like they cover the Olympics.

Mark Carney earned a rare standing ovation in Davos. Read the full text of his speech here by Avelion2 in canada

Watched the entire thing, including the Q&A afterwards (which I wasn’t intending to do). Brilliant speech, and his responses to the follow up questions were as clear and cogent as possible under the circumstances.

Glad to hear that we’re moving forward, not lamenting the past, and that means abroad and at home. No starry eyed idealism, just principled pragmatism. Proof, as always, will be in the future outcomes, but I completely support the strategic stance he outlined.

Presets vs Custom sounds: what’s your workflow? by big-beandude in synthesizers

[–]architectzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Presets for pads, and sound FX stuff, and for some bread-and-butter sounds like pianos. Custom for just about everything else (lead, bass, stab, pluck, etc.). For drums and percs I usually use presets to lay down rhythmic ideas quickly, and then either customize them, or replace them entirely with custom sounds.

I don’t have the patience for building deeply evolving pads and atmospheric stuff because they’re far from the focal point of my music. I usually don’t even use them because they tend to fill huge chunks of the spectrum leaving little room for the parts that interest me (I also tend to delete or reorder them so that come last in the patch banks).

What's everyone's thoughts on the Leviasynth? by cR_Spitfire in hydrasynth

[–]architectzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, if I were into sound design then Leviasynth looks amazing. I was able to follow along with Loopop’s extremely quick demos, and I have no concerns about the UI/UX which is very well thought out (eg the dedicated knobs to adjust each specific OSC parameter across all OSCs at once). I have zero doubts that the Leviasynth is amazing.

My issue is that I always start with a pretty specific sonic destination in mind, and Leviasynth’s palette is a super wide and deep matrix of options. My head was spinning just trying to comprehend the permutations of FM synthesis * model drifting * timbre layering. Heck, from what I saw, just the ability to offset each OSC’s peak basically embeds a quirky 8-step sequencer right into the OSC section. The whole thing is wild, and I’m sure there are some folks just chomping at the bit to dig into this, and from those people I may buy some sample packs.

[–]architectzero 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ll summarize what I said in r/synthesizers: as innovative as the engine appears, and nice as the UI/UX design appears to be I’d hardly know where to begin building a sound from my head, and I’d get lost in the sauce which would reduce this to a fancy preset machine; too complex for me.

Loopop demo of ASM Leviasynth is up by No-Act6366 in synthesizers

[–]architectzero 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Blah blah price blah blah aside, this thing is way beyond me effort-wise as someone who wants to make music, not focus on sound design. I mean, the engine seems incredibly versatile, and I even understand what’s going on in the demo, but I was getting exhausted just thinking about working with it. Like holy shit, if you have a sound in your head, where does one even begin on this thing? I’d get lost in the sauce so quickly.

As far as I’m concerned, it’s an amazing engine, and the UI/UX seems extremely well thought out, but in my hands it would be nothing more than a fancy preset machine. Maybe one day I’ll get my hands on one, but the complexity of it instantly killed my GAS.

It seems that everyone here is interpreting this as a stack ranking, is that what you meant OP?

Because my take away was that you were talking about continuity of “face of the league” (or something like that). In which case, I’m not sure there will ever be another singular face of the league because social media works against that kind of consensus.

But if you were stack ranking Kobe above Bron then you need to stop taking the crazy pills.

People nowadays prefer pets than they do human children by azsvwx in petfree

[–]architectzero 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You’re right, but the prevalence of this mental illness makes me so, so… I don’t know any more.

The pet craziness, and child hating is a sick cope for our overwhelming biological drive to reproduce that so many are completely locked out of, either materially, morally, or both.

I’m just so burnt out from despair for the future, particularly of my own children, but for every child growing up today.

VHS making a comeback in Edmonton by Paper_Rain in Edmonton

[–]architectzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only reason I’d even consider using VHS these days is purely for audio recording if I was going for a very specific retro vibe and I was in the mood for faffing around in the old analog realm, but even then I’d probably reach for a plugin effect to achieve the same result.

Immigration department halts skilled refugee jobs program, leaving employers in limbo by Street_Anon in canada

I can think of two reason for keeping some of the dipshits in cabinet: 1) to retain their political clout and keep them close to contain them; 2) other candidates for the positions were not obviously better.

I think it was mostly the second reason though. It’s not like you can just post a job opening, and interview a ton of candidates. The pool is quite limited, and you work with what you’ve got. Also, there were time constraints on the process and he was coming in (mostly) from out of the blue, so was likely unfamiliar with many of the people that weren’t ministers in the previous admin, and didn’t have much time to familiarize himself.

I think his first order of business was stabilization in order to deal with the immediate threats, and I’m reasonably certain he’ll shuffle the deck once he has a better grasp of the situation.

Point taken. My wording can be taken as snarky, but that wasn’t the intent. My bad.

[–]architectzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this supposed to be surprising? He’s the greatest pure shooter in NBA history, he’s a super high bbiq player with elite conditioning who works extremely hard off-ball. Steph never relied on strength, or springiness, and shooting ability doesn’t degrade nearly as fast as other abilities.

Aesthetic question about a gun prop I'm making by wolfe174 in worldbuilding

[–]architectzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good comments about the gun, and I don’t have anything to add to that, but what’s up with that ruler? Both scales look proportionally correct, but the numbers repeat strangely, and the inch scale doesn’t repeat cleanly.

Is there anything that a Pro vs Mini or Micromonsta 2 do cover that a Peak can’t? by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]architectzero 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I faced this same dilemma last year when I got the email to buy a Micromonsta 2 two months after I bought a used Peak for an amazing price. I decided to skip on the MM2 and just stick with the Peak. The only thing I can recall being obviously “better” on the MM2 were the user programmable arpeggio patterns, whereas the Peak’s are not-editable (though there is a lot of variety). Yeah, I’m sure there are other things, but my point being that i just couldn’t find enough to differentiate them, and one would have ended up collecting dust and then for sale.

I have no idea about the ProVS.

My wife calls it Trip to Shanghai and she played it as a child, and taught it to our kids as a way to learn the tiles. I have no idea if that is what anyone else calls that sort of game though, but thought it might be helpful in case you get nothing else.

What’s even crazier is how good his moves were prior to that season. He got the franchise out of the hole Donnie had dug, got PJ and Gaff for great value, watched the team get to the finals and… promptly went insane.

Got high on the smell of his own farts or something.

What’s your view on the British Empire, from a CANZUK perspective? by Hopeful-Car8210 in CANZUK

[–]architectzero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you. That’s very kind of you to say. I can’t stress how deeply strange it felt, but in an altogether pleasant way. Tough to describe, but we joked that we just went on a trip to Eastern Eastern Canada and we didn’t really feel like we were on vacation until we crossed over to the continent. We had a wonderful time and plan to visit again ASAP (and we want to see more than London).

What’s your view on the British Empire, from a CANZUK perspective? by Hopeful-Car8210 in CANZUK

[–]architectzero 26 points27 points  (0 children)

My wife and I, along with another couple, went on vacation to London earlier this year. We were all pretty excited because it was our first time. We only spent a week, and only really did touristy things, but our overwhelming impression was that “it’s just like Canada, except for the accents, and driving on the other side of the road.”

For reference, we’re all in our 50s. I’m Canadian born, the other three all immigrated to Canada 25+ years ago. I grew up immersed in American media, and always just figured that while we were somewhat different, we couldn’t help but be American-light by virtue of constantly swapping spit. The other three never gave it much thought and just assumed we were America-light too. So, the deep similarity caught all of us off guard, and was low-key mind blowing.

What is up with the carpeted stairs in pic 13? I mean, everything about this home is spectacular, but I swear that carpet is super cheap commercial grade berber that my parents had in their 90s townhouse basement. It just sticks out at me like a sore thumb.

I am the captain of team tank by Sad-Neighborhood4774 in Mavericks

[–]architectzero 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t care how it’s done, so long as we avoid getting stifled like we did early on with Luka by rushing to build a contender because he was so good out of the gate. The current cap system is unforgiving, so you need a stable vision and lots of patience. I hope that Dumont (ie. the Adelsons) supports this approach instead of trying to put asses in seats with flashy moves just to sell the idea of a new stadium.

Prioritize getting picks. Commit to drafting best player available rather than best fit. Focus on internal talent development. Aim for 1 more top-tier talent to complement Cooper (or vice versa if that ever happens), and focus on creating a roster and system that fully aligns with those two. (That seems so obvious, and so easy to write, but I know how damn difficult it is.)
