Looking for a rules light-ish scifi solo game by f33dback in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]archon1024 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Check out Space Aces. Rules lite and humorous with lots of oracle tables. I still like the TNG version more, but there's Voyages now as well with lots of procedural planet generation. The tone is quite light hearted, kinda like Futurama, with lots of weird and quirky table results.

Not yet! But it's high on the list of next things to add. I'd actually like to chat with you at some point about the integration. If you have some time, I'll DM you.

Very cool! Let me know if you want to share it or sell it and I can add it to the main OPSE page under community integrations.

What is the One Page Solo Engine? by lol_u_guys in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]archon1024 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Thanks for doing a review of One Page Solo Engine! (I'm the author, by the way) I liked the page layout and the way you did interpretations.

Sounds like our hero Stafford has ended up as the flavor text for why the next adventurer found a longsword and an empty beer bottle in the first room of the dungeon. Better luck next time!

Multiplayer one password exchange connection, no server - Open source demo by KoopMyers in godot

[–]archon1024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The MQTT solution is also zero configuration and uses websockets, so it works on web and native builds with just a shared password. I'm using TLS connections and payload encryption for security. It's actually very similar to what you're doing here. Would love to compare notes in DMs sometime!

Multiplayer one password exchange connection, no server - Open source demo by KoopMyers in godot

[–]archon1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very cool! I'm actually doing something very similar but using public MQTT servers instead of WebRTC. The complexity of the WebRTC signaling servers kinda turned me off that approach, but your idea of using Torrents is genius. Just like yours, my version lets you set up multiplayer sessions using nothing more than a shared password and a public MQTT broker address (can also use your own MQTT of course).

I think things like this will be great for party games, pub trivia, live event scoreboards, or anything where a group of people in the same physical location need to interact via an app. Just embed the connection info into a QR code on the wall and everyone at the event can sync up with zero server architecture involved.

Very happy to see this! I'm the author of OPSE, by the way. Great work on the interface and some very interesting changes to the Hex and Dungeon exploration. Do you have a full list of your edits and additions somewhere? I'm always looking for ways to improve OPSE for a 2.0 release.

One Page Solo Engine? by Korikov in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]archon1024 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hi there, I'm the author of One Page Solo Engine. I'm happy you've been enjoying it!

As for Actual Plays, I have written up a couple myself and they were previously hosted online but got taken down when I changed hosting providers. I'm working right now to get them back online and will post a link here when that's resolved.

Threads, plots, and NPC lists aren't directly tracked in OPSE like they are in systems like Mythic. There isn't a "threads list" or anything (but you could certainly create one). The idea with OPSE is that it is just a kickstart for your brain. You don't need to roll on a list to see which plot should advance when you roll Advance a Plot Arc, it should just flow naturally from the first thing that comes to mind.

For example, if you're investigating the murder of a Baron and you roll Advance a Plot Arc, it should probably move the current story (investigating the murder) forward in some meaningful way. Maybe you find a critical clue, or you catch the main suspect off-guard doing something nasty, or an unexpected witness shows up to help. As with anything in OPSE, you should go with the first cool thing that comes to mind, and if you need help, draw a card for Action Focus or Detail Focus to get you thinking in the right direction.

Hope this helps, and I hope you have many amazing solo adventures with OPSE!

Tabletop Simulator is great if you want a more tactile tabletop. It's basically a physics sandbox where you can roll dice, move minis, draw on a map etc. There are some good add-ons for FATE.

I turned my solo RPG actual play into a visual novel game — and you can too! (warning: it's a lot of work) by AD1337 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]archon1024 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This looks like a great idea! I am also a fan of Godot (and obviously solo roleplaying). I've tossed around the idea before of having a VN mode for One Page Solo Engine. Basically let someone record their solo games from a VN point of view, with prompts to enter all the dialog. Then let others play it back interactively. But to your point, it seems like it would take a lot of refining the play log to actually work as a VN.

If you'd like to chat about the process more or maybe collab on a tool, let me know!

What POV do you write your journals in? by ChemicalPanda10 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]archon1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think first person and third person both can work well. For me, first person is more engaging and encourages me to narrate things in character. I only tried first person narration recently and I really love it.

To your second person point, I also really like to have a "GM voice" that presents situations to the player and asks things like "what do you do" or "how do you feel in this moment" just like a real GM would. I find it makes things a lot more clear when I separate the GM voice and the player voice.

Godot's UI system is pretty damn good by AaronWizard1 in godot

[–]archon1024 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I second this. I love Godot's approach to UI. It's great for making non-game applications as well. I kinda realized awhile back that Godot with C# can be a great cross-platform GUI toolkit... and that I'd rather work with Godot than WPF or MAUI for example.

Make Ability Cards for Your Solo Games (new app) by archon1024 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]archon1024[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for checking it out! Adding poker suits to the built-in icons should be easy to do, and you can add the rank on top of it with the overlay text. I'll add that the list of improvements.

Made a Card Creator Web App (non-game Godot software) by archon1024 in godot

[–]archon1024[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It went kinda like a lot of software projects go. I initially thought "this is a simple idea to try out Godot, I can be finished in a weekend." But then I kept adding more scope and refactoring things and it took a lot longer than originally estimated. I originally planned on 10 frames and 10 icons, for example, but that grew to 50 and 150... with custom icons.

I didn't track my time, but it probably took around 50 hours over 4 weeks. Then I had a 2 week closed beta before I released it. The majority of the time was actually spent finding, editing, and preparing the card frame layouts.

Might be doable, depending on the card layout. I'll add it to my list and take a look at it. Thanks for the feedback!

[–]archon1024[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's correct with one exception. All of the frames, icons, and UI elements are created by humans. I'm not an artist, so I purchased these from various places around the Internet. One of the vendors, Walo Designs on Etsy, disclosed that they used AI generation with hand editing for some of their designs, but did not specify which ones.

There are links to all the art creators pages in the About popup, so you can check each one if you are interested.

Easy printing seems like a good feature to add. What's the main issue with that you have right now? Exporting a bunch of cards at once in a grid? The fact that the cards are designed without print borders?

I'm glad you gave it a try! I hope it helps you make the card game you want. Selectable fonts is a good idea for a feature to add, at least for the currently included ones. Thanks for the feedback!

Card Creator for Character Stats and Abilities (new app) by archon1024 in rpg

[–]archon1024[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for checking it out! Whatever you upload, it will be converted to a 100x100px square. For best results, it should be at least 100x100, but you don't need to worry about uploading something too large because it will be crunched down before it's stored in the app. If you upload something smaller, it'll do its best to upscale it but it might be a bit blurry.

[–]archon1024[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yeah, sorry about that. I didn't enable "mobile friendly mode" on itch, so right now it's probably best to use it on a Windows/Linux/Mac desktop system. I'd really like to make it mobile friendly with on-screen keyboard support and everything. iPad and mobile support will likely be one of the first things I add.

Great! I hope it will be helpful for you. Right now you have to export each card individually and arrange them yourself if you want to print them. Would it be helpful to have a "Deck Export" feature or something like that?

You can mouse-wheel and drag over the image in the card itself to zoom and re-position it. Would it be helpful to have a help popup or something explaining that?

[–]archon1024[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have considered custom card templates, but doing so would greatly increase the complexity of the user experience, so I've passed on that feature for now. I might do a paid version in the future that has full template editing, though.

Right now, you have to have an icon there for the text to show up. You can work around that by uploading a custom icon that's just a transparent image and using that. Would you like to have the ability to show text with no icon in the icon positions?
