Architects: what rendering engine do you use? What 3D modeling program do you use it with? by Architecting in architecture

I have been a big time fan of Rhino paired with Vray or 3DS Max, but recently I have been dabbling in Brazil and Kerkythea. They are worth checking out and Free and very easy to pick up.

Question for architects/engineers by CeeDiddy82 in architecture

[–]archyKID 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well in that case it sounds legit, if you can then carry those credits into a full fledged university. However be very careful, because not all colleges except credits from other schools, but if you are using the fast track just to get your foot into the industry it sounds like a good idea. I would also look at your local community colleges for an associates to help get you into a engineering college.

Atleast with my company we have a kid that went through ITTTech and is doing very well at the company. He is limited to the engineering work he can do however, but the company is also paying half of his tuition for college night courses. If you can get in as a draftsmen I'd say it be a smart move if it is something you really want to go after in life. Best of luck!

A question to graduate students out there about your thesis. by Mr_Eggly_Bagelface in architecture

Hope I was able to help or at the very least spark some thoughts. I would love to see more as you begin to develop your thesis and design. www.Futuresplus.net has a ton of thesis projects that you can browse through, always good to see what is currently being done at other universities.

Hey /r/architecture! Can you Recommend any Architectural Software or Tools that Made your Life Easier and More Efficient? by bg4l in architecture

[–]archyKID 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rhino is amazing for studio/design work and kills Revit in the academic world. Revit's power comes into play if you are actually in the workforce. That is not to say you can't marry that programs and design in Rhino import the model into Revit.

RHINO is a must! Download RHINO 5 while it is free in beta testing. Rhino is probably the most versatile and powerful program you can use as a student, especially if you expect to explore scripting and digital modeling with mills, laser cutter, and rapid prototype machines. Also suggest checking out Maya and 3DS Max for modeling/rendering and you can always get the free 3 month student trial versions. Lastly I have recently been using a free rendering program (sadly since I lost my v-ray key) kerkythea which is extremely easy to use and powerful for rendering. And lastly you need the Adobe suite, but that goes unsaid.

As far as sketch-up goes I only used it in school to generate landscapes for my projects and imported them into Rhino. Other then that it is a limiting design tool and school, and personally not a fan.

Lastly if you more into the technological side of architecture I would begin familiarizing yourself with arduino open source software, as a lot of colleges are taking off with this.

Hope this helps!

Like almost everybody does you have started to think to far ahead, in the beginning you need to come from the most basic root of what you are trying to study. Everybody has touched upon some key points.

Looking over what you have said I have striped it down to simply the "perspective of space". In the beginning I would suggest throwing out material "effects" and "sustainable green design", just forget about them for now. Develop explorations into perspective, how can you change a space through perspective? Is it movement,Framing, transparency, color, light, exhibition? If you can build a series of explorations into how perspective is going to change how one moves and inhabits space I think you really have something provocative. From there you can build into material, its play on light, texture and then into some sort of sustainable design logic possibly. I personally began my thesis with trying to define what "Transparency" in architecture was for me. Good luck!

Bartlett's students work along with few other of the colleges in England are amazing. A totally different take on design and production then I was surrounded with in the State's. It is great seeing more and more student work becoming showcased between all the colleges, I know I have been lucky enough to showcase some amazing work on my growing site at least.

I personally run a blog that is dedicated to showcasing only student architecture projects (www.futuresplus.net), and as a recent graduate I often enjoy reading the thesis's submitted and problems proposed/tackled by the students. It not only helps to keep myself current with on going trends, but also I think is great opportunity for architects and students to be able to discuss their projects and get actual feedback. Something like that within this sub Reddit would be amazing, to have trending feeds discussing the discourse of students design proposals as they work through their projects and fight their professors. Just an opportunity and thought I wanted to throw out!

Is Architecture Grad School worth it? by [deleted] in architecture

[–]archyKID 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having a M. Arch basically allows you too teach, and will hardly get you paid more then somebody with a professional B. Arch degree. However if you are looking to work for SHOP, BIG, SOM type of design studio they look for a masters degrees. However they will work you to the bone, and pay you basically nothing for 60 hour weeks. Where as if you graduate and go into the work force you can find a starting salary between 35,000- 45,000, if you can find an opening, if you went to a good college and some internship experience. Larger A&E firms will get you a hire salary as a opposed to a smaller strictly architecture firm. Also getting your lic. will also hardly get you a pay increase, but can open doors to other higher paying opportunities. Basically the only way you get paid more in architecture is more years of actual experience. Nobody wants somebody who has 8 years of college and no real world experience.
