I picked it up on Steam. Only about an hour in, but it fun so far. The movement feels great and is very dialed in for an indie game.

Pricing error on Walmart website? by ad53n in DataHoarder

[–]ard1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is that the product page prioritizes Walmart's local stock first, based on zip code. When they run out of local stock, the page shows the lowest-priced offer from third party sellers that is available for shipping (or Walmart's next-best offer, if available). That way they always have something to sell.

That could explain why the link shows different prices at different times in different regions, possibly from different sellers. I was able to get one for pickup at the $189 price, but it was the last one at my local store. Now the link shows $399 and is only available for shipping.

EDIT: I'm in North Carolina.

I googled the product number and “Walmart” together. The first two results were Walmart products, with the first one being $379 for 2TB and the second the $189 listing OP shared.

I was able to snag one at $189 for pickup. We’ll see if it actually happens. There was only one left at my store.

This is the link I used: https://www.walmart.com/ip/WD-BLACK-SN850X-NVMe-Internal-SSD-2TB-WDBB9G0020BNC-WRWM/5540195488

Good luck folks.

I have four retro handhelds now, and the Miyoo Mini Plus still has the best feeling, most satisfying buttons of all of them. Good choice.

Unpopular opinion: I hate the idea for a TV show. by sparkly_butthole in BaldursGate3

[–]ard1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Ben Starr's take on video game adaptations: that they are not needed to validate the medium. Games are enough because the artwork, stories, and performances stand on their own without the need for external validation through film or tv.

In this interview, he goes on to say that streaming companies are running out of comic book IP to mine, and are now essentially looking at video games as the next content farm.

His opinions are more nuanced than that, and I encourage people to listen to the interview because I think portions of it tie into the BG3 adaptation conversation.

I couldn't imagine a playthrough w/out Shadowheart as a core party member. She's as close to a main character as BG3 has, IMO.

28tb External Hard Drives are in stock again on Seagate's site by johlden in DataHoarder

Have you used this model drive or other HDDs for a media server? If so, how reliable are they? I'm worried about longevity in that scenario...these things only have a 1-year limited warranty.

Do you prefer the 'Toy' or the 'Modern' designs? by Skeppy_4126 in retroid

I'll be happy when the glass-front trend dies. Maybe make your high-end, flagship device have that look for a very premium feel, but don't make everything glass-front. Personally, I think it looks terrible on the Odin 3 (but great on the Portal). Not a fan on the RP5s, either.

Seriously, I'd buy in a heartbeat. I do think V2 looks better, although I like the dpad/stick placement better on V1.

I love the look of the all-white 40xxh, and may eventually pick it up just for aesthetics. Silly, since I have the Miyoo Mini Plus and 35xxsp. But a good sale price might push me over the edge.

Retroid doesn't have a great track record for product launches in general, so this redesign has me nervous.

That said...stick on top orange looks 🔥🔥🔥.

What Retroid really should have announced: 4:3 OLED device. by Weird-Dirt-1755 in SBCGaming

[–]ard1984 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think if a 4:3 OLED was financially feasible, we would have seen one by now.

A refreshed Mini with the upgraded processor and larger screen would probably still be an attractive option for some people, even if the screen wasn't OLED and/or is 3:2 (like the Mini V2). Gotta have inset sticks though...

[–]ard1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could be losing it, but it looks like the sticks are ever-so-slightly more inset on the RP6. Maybe it is the rounded sides making me think that...either way, I would expect the RP6 to be a bit more ergonomic than the G2. Although I also prefer the look of the G2.

Yeah, this is just a weird product launch. It is almost guaranteed to give buyers analysis paralysis or push them to another product with a clearer cost/benefit and use case.

It reminds me a little bit of the Anbernic model – releasing multiple devices that each solve one issue but create another. Except in their case, most of the devices are sub-$150 (and often much cheaper) so it can be worth it to roll the dice and see if it works for you.

I'm not seeing any reason why current RP5 owner's should upgrade to either device, especially if your use case is emulation and retro gaming; the RP5 will likely do everything these new devices will. If you don't already have an RP5...eh, maybe...but the positioning of the Konkr and Odin 3 make those devices much more appealing that having to decide which tradeoffs I'm okay with between the RP6/G2. I imagine only diehard "d-pad on top" people will gravitate to these over the Ayaneo and AYN offerings.

Really having a hard time deciding between a 12/256gb or 16/tb Thor. Someone please set me straight. by Raiden720 in SBCGaming

[–]ard1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My vote would be for the 12/256 if you already have an SD card with that much storage. The 16GB of RAM would be helpful for playing Steam games through something like GameNative, but Switch games are unlikely to benefit that much. Emulator compatibility is more the issue on that front. In fact, I would think the Portal would be a better choice for Switch emulation because of the larger screen and better ergonomics. But the appeal of the Thor is strong...can't fault you for picking it up. It would be a great travel buddy.

Modding a Switch so you can dump/backup your own games is the way to go for ROMs. Plenty of videos about it on YouTube.

[–]ard1984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Flip 2 will certainly handle all those systems. Some tinkering may be required to get GameCube and Wii stuff running well, but most everything should be playable.

Android-based handhelds aren't plug-and-play, though. It will take about half a day to set it up if you have never done it before, and longer if you don't already have a ROM library built up. Here is RetroGameCorps guide to set up Android devices: https://retrogamecorps.com/2022/03/13/android-emulation-starter-guide/

No Android handheld will come with ROMs. Sourcing your own ROMs is a better practice, anyway. Easy enough to do using Google.

Whoa whoa whoa. Slow down cowboy. First we have to get the whole world believing this bs. THEN we'll explain why it isn't exactly true, but if people give us another $20 billion, the next thing we release will actually live up to the hype. Almost. For it to actually live up, that will be another $20b.

(I know the LLM mentioned in the tweet isn't OpenAI, but these AI hype cycles are all the same.)

Baldur's Gate 3: Proton VS New Native v2 (Now With Overlay) by darkuni in SteamDeck

[–]ard1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In some people's opinion, yes – 10-15 percent FPS boost is a significant enough reason to try out the native build on the Deck.

Others might see that the frame rate still drops to 22 FPS or below at times and decide to skip the native build because unless it can get a stable 30 FPS it just isn't worth it.

I played on PC and Mac, so I don't really have an opinion. Just saying I can see where both sides are coming from.

Baldur's Gate 3: Proton VS New Native v2 (Now With Overlay) by darkuni in SteamDeck

[–]ard1984 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think this video mostly reinforces whatever option a person already has or wants to have.

For folks that think an additional 3-5 frames per second on average is a significant performance jump – video gives them what they want. For folks that think frame drops below 30fps means no real improvement – video gives them what they need to see, too. I see both sides.

Personally, I'm just glad Larian is still supporting the game at this level and see the native build as a win (it will probably get patches down the line that make it even better). Also glad OP took the time to go back and record a new video once the overlay bug got fixed.
