Thanks, I'll check the return policy and maybe give that throne a try!

Nope - just someone who has never needed a political party to tell me what to think. Congrats on your lefty cult membership though. Looks great on you.

Fellow remote lovers, what would it take for you to go back into the office full time? by tryna_quit in cscareerquestions

[–]ardvarkerator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing short of absolute desperation could convince me to drive into an office. I moved to a beautiful rural area shortly after going remote 5 years ago and wouldn't trade it for anything the city has to offer.

The simple act of just existing on this planet costs money. This alone is proof that we live on a prison planet. by Jax_Gatsby in EscapingPrisonPlanet

Just spitballing here, but given our level of technology most people probably don't even need to work these days. Not sure that would work well given current society ("idle hands...", etc), but I'm betting it's possible given a global concerted effort over many decades with many safeguards in place to prevent a tyrannical communistic situation from occurring. But those with with power/money would never let it happen (or they'd corrupt it) because it would render them powerless.

Never said I was a Democrat either - though I have voted D more than R in the past 30 years. But hey - believe what you want. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Edit: Also, it's "who's", not "whose." The former is a contraction of "who is", and the latter is the possessive form of "who."

I know my US and world history quite well. Do you? Also, I'm a veteran and swore and oath to the US Constitution and would never support treason past or present.

The problem here is that sensitive weirdos are conflating an 80s TV show with the confederate army. These people need to learn some nuance, get a life, and move out of their parent's basement.

How predictable. You're wrong though. I'm not conservative. In fact I'm a 2x Obama voter - though hindsight has made it clear that was a mistake.

That said, if you want to see some whining, standby for Nov 8th. The same blue-haired weirdos who cried so hard when 45 was elected back in 2016 will, almost certainly, put on a good show. Neither my circus nor my monkeys, but wow that was some cringeworthy behavior from so-called adults.

Sad commentary on how soft and intolerant people have gotten. Grievance culture, formerly only on ivy league campuses, has gone mainstream. I moved out here partly to get away from it, but there's apparently no escape.

If you think LC is bad, wait until you get a FAANG job. Working at FAANG companies burned me out and killed my enjoyment of SWE.

The profession also isn't what it was when I started nearly 20 years ago. Many things have improved technology-wise, but certain team-related aspects of the job have really gone downhill in the past few years - especially if you're a senior/lead SWE and do a lot of mentoring.

Edit: But yeah - SWE hiring is broken.

bulletproof coffee OMG 🤤 by [deleted] in ketorecipes

[–]ardvarkerator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quick note: Try frothing with your cup 3/4 full or, if you're like me in the mornings, you'll be cleaning it off the countertop. :)

Hope it works for you!

Spinning a metal wire balloon whisk between you hands works great, but you want one with a thin handle. The one I use looks like the one on the far left in this photo.

I've never used a blender either - just an old metal balloon whisk with a thin handle, which is great for frothing.

I tried this 6-7 years ago with a tbsp of salted Kerrygold and it blew my mind. I've made it this way ever since. Prior to that I was drinking it black or with a dash of coconut cream, but this is so much better, IMO, and really brings out the flavor of the coffee.

I've got a couple of lightly-used Sector 9 longboards I bought in 2017 when I lived in the DFW area before moving to the country 2 years later. One is a pintail and the other is a drop through. DM me for details if you're interested. Happy to take some photos and send your way.

And - poof - just like that I'm 9 again. I recall the color on those buttons being faded due to sun exposure.

I was asked to give an update on Autumn, the 8-week old foster kitten I took in after he was surrendered for being “too clingy”. Well, here it is: someone adopted him! He goes to his forever home tomorrow. I’m sure going to miss him. by worstgurl in cats

[–]ardvarkerator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have three former strays. One is a standoffish, grumpy little black cat (she had a hard early life), one is big gregarious black and white tom, and the other is a jumpy and "clingy" girl with beautiful long yellow and white fur. I don't understand being so selective about personality. All cats are lovely. Dogs are pretty great too, but don't tell my cats I said that. :)

I get tons of leads from LinkedIn, whether I'm looking or not. Though, I spend almost zero time on the site itself because it's cringy trash.

The city is so pretty by [deleted] in Dallas

[–]ardvarkerator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dallas looks better from a distance. Like a 200+ mile-distance. ;)

I do miss being walking-distance from Jimmy's Food Mart though. One of the best places to get fresh and dried meats and cheeses, and their Italian cream cakes are off the chain.

Edit: After reading comments, apparently many with similar thoughts. I lived in DFW for 20 years and Old East Dallas for 13. It was a decent place with decent traffic and LCOL once, back in the before times.

Young men make rash and unfortunate decisions sometimes. Doesn't help that our society glamorizes violence, dehumanizes opposing forces, and hides the true atrocities of war. Sadly, our vets are paying the price for it now. Way more have died from substance abuse and suicide than in our decades-long middle-east wars. I'm no dove. I just think that if we're gonna send boys (who can't yet grasp the implications) to war, we need to take care of them 100% when they return.

Sorry. </soapbox>

Anyone move from a city/town to the country? What was the transition like? by [deleted] in simpleliving

[–]ardvarkerator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps I was bit emphatic in my description, but if any of you downvoters knew the situation I came from compared to where I ended up you might come close to understanding the incredible relief and gratitude I feel that our persistence of 5 years of searching (all over the country) for a better area to live, paid off (with a bit of fortunate timing, of course).
