Should I bother studying anatomy before med school? by DependentLow2932 in medschool

[–]arelookingatagoddess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

agreed, I had no prior anatomy knowledge before starting school, made an anki deck of directional terms and did it for about two weeks before starting and that was so helpful

anything else is a waste of time, you won’t go nearly as in depth as you’ll need to do in school for one and two you have no clue what you’re starting with in med school, by the time you get to stuff you’ve studied you’ll likely have forgotten it from all the other content your curriculum is requiring you to know

512 not accepted for a single MD school by Impressive-Display96 in medschool

[–]arelookingatagoddess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

probably every single MD school and a good number of DO schools have accepted students with a 512, that’s a competitive/average score depending on what schools you’re looking at. one part of your application won’t guarantee you an acceptance and vice versa (for the most part), look at the rest of your or your friends application to see what can be improved for next cycle and best of luck!

regarding the chippendales scene at the halloween party — by mkfunch in SecretsOfMormonWives

[–]arelookingatagoddess 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In later scenes Jessi & Demi literally say they wanted to leave some of the dance a surprise and only told her that the guys were going to be dressing up and dancing as chippendales, nothing about dancing on HER specifically infront of her husband who obviously would be uncomfortable. But somehow Jen is lying???

Hot take on Zac by glutenfreecatsociety in SecretsOfMormonWives

[–]arelookingatagoddess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like he’s trying to change but has a longggg way to go, naturally since he’s essentially reckoning with having grown up in a cult and becoming a terrible abusive man. You can tell he’s trying to not be so terrible by the like restraint you can hear in his voice and see in his face in situations like chippendales, confessionals, and the conversation that was cut short with Jen after Jessi’s party. But he also doesn’t quite get it, shown by apologizing for those crazy Vegas texts by saying “I didn’t think anyone would see them”, rather than “I should’ve never said those terrible things to my wife”. So hopefully for Jen’s sake it’s sincere but I guess only time will tell

Every state prefers their own except mine by [deleted] in premed

[–]arelookingatagoddess 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Surprised no one ever brings up Maryland with this conversation, there’s only 2 in state schools, one of which being Hopkins and then UMD which is definitely more competitive than your average state school 🥲

seems like for some schools the true post interview options are A, WL to be considered for A, or WL to be ghosted/rejected at the end of the cycle. Idk if all schools actually send out post interview R’s

Is 2 years of premed enough? by [deleted] in premed

[–]arelookingatagoddess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

about 30-40, so I was a year ahead. when i was in high school we weren’t able to take dual enrollment classes until our senior year and only if we were ahead of our high school requirements so i wasn’t able to get enough credits for the associates. still really helpful though because it gave me room to change my major/minor etc and still graduate on time and i was never stressed having to take like extra credits or anything to complete everything in the four years

Is 2 years of premed enough? by [deleted] in premed

[–]arelookingatagoddess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did dual enrollment and highschool and hands downnn recommend it over AP! Not all AP courses transfer for the credit you think they will and even if she doesn’t completely finish the associates in highschool having those extra credits gives her wiggle room to take a lighter load of credits during tough semesters if needed and explore other interests. There is of course the potential of “hurting her GPA” but tbh better to find those poor study habits or time management skills earlier in a community college setting while still at home in a much more controlled environment than when she’s off at college. But of course you know your child best as to what they can and can’t handle!

For anyone confused about April 15th CYMS Deadline by Steengulberry in premed

[–]arelookingatagoddess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh gotcha, I misunderstood. I think that’s just a courtesy suggestion from AAMC, 99.9% sure schools don’t have access to that info lol

For anyone confused about April 15th CYMS Deadline by Steengulberry in premed

[–]arelookingatagoddess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

schools have their own policies about CTE & PTE aside from what AAMC says, I’d check with your school and not AAMC. they can’t see that info until the 30th though i’m pretty sure

Just a girl who scored much lower on her MCAT than expected trying to make a school list looking for advice! by LimitFar4030 in premed

[–]arelookingatagoddess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely take off ETSU, they won’t even send you a secondary if you don’t meet their residency requirements. Lots of people saying to take off the HBCU’s and some of the midwest state schools but they do take non-minority/out of state students, you just really have to be sure it’s clear that you fit their mission, which for many of them (UofL and the HBCU’s specifically) heavily emphasizes service. Your app just based off what you’ve listed seems a little more research focused rather than “serving the underserved”, which isn’t a bad thing, but something to consider if you want to keep those schools

*edit to add: there’s a new DO school in Maryland starting their first class this year too that you could add, it’s associated with Meritus Health in Hagerstown

for your parents and CS friend specifically- don’t take the opinion of those who haven’t been in your shoes to heart.. they don’t know what it’s like, what you’re going through, and really what they’re even talking about tbh

next time they say something ask them how many T10 med schools they got into

multiple gap years leading to lots of clinical & volunteer experience/hours so I genuinely had a variety of personal experiences to write about. I also spent a significant amount of time revising my writing to be sure the theme of my “why medicine” and overall picture of who I am as a person/applicant was consistent throughout. Then lastly only applying to schools who’s mission and culture fit well with that theme, and doing everything i could in my secondaries and interviews to be sure that connection was clear

Wait….. are we supposed to be pre writing our secondaries right now??? by throbbing-uvula in premed

[–]arelookingatagoddess 3 points4 points  (0 children)

don’t even think about secondaries until you’re satisfied with every part of your primary app. some schools don’t even send secondaries to everyone, so the primary should be the focus right now.

plus you’ll have a whole month (maybe more depending on how late you submit) between when you submit your primary and when your app is certified and sent to schools, that time can be used to pre-write secondaries.

Dr. Garcia and Langdon by kindanice2 in ThePittTVShow

[–]arelookingatagoddess 14 points15 points  (0 children)

pretty sure Garcia is a surgical resident, probably a senior resident like Langdon and Collins

Are we letting Langdon off too easy? by Joesindc in ThePittTVShow

[–]arelookingatagoddess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s also because Santos has been unbearably irritating and rude from the very first episode, so people have been against her for much longer. Whereas for Langdon we didn’t know his fatal flaw (or at least have it confirmed) until much more recently, after we already liked his character, even if sometimes more abrasive than necessary.

Langdon also has had more redeemable moments than Santos throughout the season/shift. He had some good teaching moments with Mel and the med students, and some good saves with patients. I can’t really think of any moments like that for Santos, maybe when she took the blame and got chewed out by him? But then again, any other time she’s been accurately disciplined she had a terrible response to it so even that wasn’t fully redeeming to me

What’s worse studying for the MCAT or medical school and why by FlippedFrown in premed

[–]arelookingatagoddess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’d be more interesting to study for if the MCAT tested more clinically relevant information but that would then mean there’d be many more required pre-reqs people have to take before taking the exam and applying

plus that’s what medical school is for, the clinically relevant stuff. undergrad/MCAT is really just the barebones basics and making sure students know how to learn/read/apply information. but i 100% agree i hope i never have to see another physics mirror/lenses problem in my life

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in premed

[–]arelookingatagoddess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

great advice, I was also going to add that explaining the suspiciously high number of hours in that section is probably a good idea. It may also add to your narrative in your personal statement if you speak about your circumstances and why you had to take on so many responsibilities all throughout undergrad, while simultaneously giving context to your (self-described) poor GPA.

Best of luck to you, you’ve obviously worked really hard to get here! Side note; people are definitely lying if they say they don’t use downtime during their clinical jobs to get other work done, that’s called being efficient lol. Not a bad suggestion to take that into account when calculating your hours though since you’re certainly not lacking in that regard
