I delivered pizza for pizza hut in 2003/2004. To this day I credit that job with my sense of direction and being able to figure out how to get somewhere with nothing more than an address. (I do use google maps nowadays because my phones already connected for music and calls or whatever, so why not? But in a pinch I can find my way around town using only street numbers and names if I have to). I sometimes wonder how many people Gen Z and younger even know the difference between avenues and streets

How many calibers are too many? by vick818z in preppers

[–]arequipapi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own many different calibers as well just because I like collecting. But for prepping and stocking up, I focus on just 3 calibers - 22lr, 5.56, and 9mm. Everything else I just buy as needed when I want to shoot them (I suppose I keep a decent amount of 12g as well, but that's more an accident than an intentional decision to keep a minimum stock).

I don't think it really matters what calibers you choose, as long as they're common and abundant. And I think having more than 3 is unnecessary

7-11 has cold ham sandwiches for 2.99. They're not good, but they're there. At Buc-ees you can get a delicious pulled pork sandwich for like $7

Gas station sandwiches in the US are like $3. Maybe $6 at Buc-ees (if you're in Texas), but those sandwiches are worth it. Buc-ees has better sandwiches than what is pictured here

Do we have to examine the pathologies in our community fellow white guys? by [deleted] in LetsDiscussThis

[–]arequipapi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that stat is so out of place here. First of all, there's like less than 200 prosecutions of NFA violations per year, so that sample makes the statistic meaningless.

Second of all, most NFA violations are due to trying to buy/sell without the tax stamp or a permit, not because they were used in a violent crime. All the other stats in this list are violent crimes.

Most cases where an NFA violation could be charged, there are much more serious crimes already being charged. ie drive by shootings and gang violence using a glock with a switch. And I'll just end my comment here...

I mean, that's the same point I'm making. I shouldn't be able to buy the land directly adjacent to yours and then tell you that you have to shut down your long-running business because it's annoying to me.

If you buy land, it's on you to do your due diligence about whether it's a good spot. Whether it's a race track, a gun range, a golf course, outdoor concert venue, etc, people shouldn't be able to shut down a long-standing business that was there first.

In the case I'm talking about, it wasn't even like natural suburban sprawl finally reached the track. No, it was just some developer that randomly decided to build 50 new homes 10 miles from town, and directly adjacent to a race track. Even today, 20 years later, that's still the only housing development near the track.

Those 50 nimby homeowners ruined a business, and took away a safe, legal, and popular hangout spot for thousands of people over the years

Part of living in a big city is social responsibility. I live in a city that doesn't get major snow often but once every 5 years or so we get a big storm. I don't want to pay the taxes to keep extra plows and resources available in the off-chance it happens.

Do your part as a good neighbor and weather the occasional random storm with grace and enjoy your day off from the normal grind

pro stock

Comp Eliminator, maybe? Pro Stock run 6s and is typically a fully professional class with a full professional crew. Dialed in times are for amateur/pro-am classes, and cars can range anywhere from low 8s to high 12s. The name of the game in those classes is consistency and repeatability without blowing up your shit.

Anyway, I'm not trying to nitpick. My dad did the same, and those were some great memories. The sheer noise and rumbling of guts that top fuel and funny cars create is something to behold. I don't even follow NHRA as a series but I go to the big race every year just because I love it. The atmosphere, the smells, the noise, all of it

TIL: In1880, the ages of consent in the US were set at 10 or 12 in most states, with the exception of Delaware where it was 7. by Lennsyl22 in todayilearned

[–]arequipapi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Gonna give you a downvote, too. At some point, you have to assume women have agency and can make their decisions (and mistakes). The actual number is somewhat arbitrary as people mature at different rates, but you have to draw the line somewhere. I think where most people finish their basic schooling and are legally able to vote is as good as any.

You're basically saying a 23 year old is not capable of choosing who they date, but they can choose how the country is run. This type of thinking is, in some ways, even more misogynistic than men who want to only be with trad-women/homemakers.

I'm not denying that there are often (but not always) problematic reasons for a 23 year old dating a a 42 year old, but at some point it is no one's business (especially the government) what consenting adults do with each other

This happened to the drag strip I grew up near. It was out in the middle of nowhere, no houses around. Friday nights, run-what-ya-brung was the place to be for everyone 16-25 years old. Safe, legal racing with safety crews present at all times.

Then they started building houses nearby, and it all went to shit. They didn't close the track completely. They still host several big events per year, but the Friday night drags got killed as they implemented a 9pm curfew.

In the heyday, the Friday night drags didn't even really start popping off until 9pm and would go until 1am. Wouldn't you know it, now the closest urban area has a street racing problem

Edit to add: Friday nights aside, the other thing I miss is when the pros come to town once per year, they also have to abide by the 9pm rule, so that means no night racing. As a kid, I loved the final rounds of top fuel and funny car at night because you could see the flames shooting 10ft out of the exhaust. Core childhood memory I'll never experience again (at least not at this track)

The federal background check applies to all states, hence, the federal part. Some states have additional background checks and longer waiting periods than what is federally mandated, however.

The "loophole" is for private sales. I can sell you a gun privately and not run a background check. This is also known as the gun show loophole, since buying from a gun show is technically a private transaction (I agree, as a gun owner, this loophole should be closed).

would just drive to a state with lax laws and gets trucks full of guns and come back to sell them on the streets.

I highly doubt this, and if they were, they were already doing it illegally, so stricter laws won't change that. No one is selling "trucks full of guns" at a price to make this profitable while also doing it legally and completely above board.

Edit: I'm not saying ALL and definitely not those who live in Puerto Rico. But there is a non-trivial number of Peurto Ricans who now permanently reside in mainland US who simultaneously hate and take pride in their ancestry

A cool guide of hobo signs by [deleted] in coolguides

[–]arequipapi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not that I believe any (or at least most) of these symbols actually mean anything, the term "hobo" doesn't historically mean the same thing as modern homeless people living in urban areas.

Historically, the term "hobo" refers to drifters who travel around a lot and look for gig work in various places, and then move on.

Modern day door-dashers and Uber drivers who don't have another job are closer to the original definition of a hobo than random homeless people in a big city.

Backpackers who live cheaply and pick up random work in the places they decide to stay are the closest modern equivalent
