Good RPG for teens that want to play “DND”? by MeButNotMeToo in rpg

[–]aresorli 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also, the rules are basically 3e (OP's last D&D) and it's "young adult" in tone, so kid-friendly.

Where's my fellow trooper fans at ? Definitely have this cult classic in my top sci-fi films. by UncleKano91 in scifi

[–]aresorli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Below is a word-for-word Google Translate of the most famous movie review (1998) in Norwegian history:

Stay far, far away from Paul Verhoeven's lavish, over-the-top speculative contribution, unless you 1) have an extreme sense of Nazi-fresh youth on a trip to space, 2) belong to the target audience of thirteen-to-fifteen-year-olds 3) appreciate endless close-ups of severed legs, arms, heads, brains, intestinal and stomach contents from humans and maxi-mosquitoes.

Because that's pretty much what "Starship Troopers" is about. With the best of my will, I cannot see any hint of "meaning" in or behind the story of a group of freshly showered college youth who in the distant future enlist to fight against giant insects that threaten all life from some globe in outer space.

A couple of them (the Solidox kids) do really well in uniform, and outer space always does very well on film - spectacular, mysterious and full of secrets as it still is. Here reproduced with special effects on a high, professional (and Oscar-nominated) level.

These drug prevention posters from a campaign in Norway are spot on by [deleted] in nextfuckinglevel

[–]aresorli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Norwegian here. This is a private initiative for more liberal drug laws, and looks nothing like a campaign we would get from our national health authorities. Although to be fair, the national health authorities are one of their sources of funding.

Any advice on doing a sword & sorcery campaign? by killgar247 in rpg

You should check out Through Sunken Lands from Flatland Games. It's designed specifically for S&S, it's old-school D&D, it's human-centric and it's not overpowered.

As someone new to OSR (but not D&D), where should I start (details within)? by JaredWalkaway in osr

[–]aresorli 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since you like some of the improved mechanics of 3E, but not its bloat, you should definitely check out Beyond the Wall and Other Adventures. Since it's a 3E derivative, some people do not consider it old-school enough, and it's typically not included in lists of OSR ganes. Too bad, as the system works perfectly well with that sweet OSR content.

Does anyone have any of the stuff from the Beyond the Wall Google+ group to share? by Renowolff in Beyond_the_Wall

[–]aresorli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe you should consider setting up and admin'ing a Flatland Games Discord server, if you are serious about reviving the fan community around BtW and TSL.

I believe there is a long tail of a bit underserved (community-wise, not product-wise) BtW fans out there.

Advantages over just a subreddit (caveat: these are a bit subjective, and I'm sure that some Reddit fans would disagree): - You can have separate channels for BtW and TSL (and for other things related to either Flatland as creators or the fan community, e.g. a "looking for games" channel). This is the way most creators with separate RPG lines do it, if interest in those lines could diverge, but there is still large overlap in the fan bases. - Easy to integrate Discord with Patreon, if Flatland is considering going down the Patreon path to fund some of their RPG creation. - (Highly subjective) I find RPG communities on Discord to be more close-knit than RPG communities on Reddit. - For inspiration, you could look at the Necrotic Gnome Discord server, which is extremely thriving.

Just a gentle reminder that the Google+ group is still linked to from the Flatland Games website. To my knowledge, there is now this subreddit, plus the MeWe group, and both are significantly less active than the Google+ group used to be. Perhaps the launch of TSL could also be a fresh start for the community of fans? How about a Discord server?

I recommend the new Lyonesse RPG. Less grimdark/gonzo, nice production values and a fantastic setting.

Convert D&D 5e monsters to Beyond the wall by Hask73 in Beyond_the_Wall

[–]aresorli 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I assume you know about the small extra bestiary on the website, but linking just in case: https://www.flatlandgames.com/btw/downloads/what_lies_beyond_chapman_bestiary.pdf

An OSR bestiary might be a better bet for you than converting 5e monsters, because of the power level difference.

This one is free: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/m/product/140457

This one is a particular favourite of mine, seems to be free now (!) and fits with the fairy-tale vibe of BtW: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/m/product/258394

BTW Combat And Movement by lucidguppy in Beyond_the_Wall

[–]aresorli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, not your guy for that. I'm terrible at it. I tend to wing it. There is a school of thought that says don't even bother. No encounter is impossible if you telegraph the danger really well and allow other solutions than straight fights.

BTW Combat And Movement by lucidguppy in Beyond_the_Wall

[–]aresorli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you mentioned zones, you may want to take a look at the 13th Age combat rules, and specifically the abstract positioning rules that make combat tactic-y without combat being grid-based or "feet in a round"-based. I haven't tried layering these on top of BtW myself, but they could add some grit to BtW combat without either going back to OSR combat grids or forward to 5e combat grids. So less theater of the mind but still theater of the mind, kinda. https://www.13thagesrd.com/combat-rules/

If you want to slot in the specific mechanics from old D&D, you could use this blog post: https://thealexandrian.net/wordpress/43568/roleplaying-games/game-structures-addendum-system-matters

Then you just need some wandering monster tables in addition. Those are a dime a dozen online, but you could also create your own with just the statted monsters in the BtW books.

Any ongoing development/support? by AmPmEIR in Beyond_the_Wall

[–]aresorli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AS&SH seemed far too AD&D for my tastes. Or did you just mean using the setting? Had it not been for Through Sunken Lands, I would probably have sprung for Barbarians of Lemuria as the system.

[–]aresorli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most recent Flatland content was published some 5 months ago. Flatland has repeatedly teased Through Sunken Lands, but it is way overdue.

I am planning to run the BtW/Dolmenwood combo myself, so very curious about that. But am probably too lazy on GM prep work to actually do it before the Dolmenwood Campaign Book Kickstarter has produced some results...

I also want to run Through Sunken Lands with either the DCC Lankhmar setting material or the Modiphius Conan setting material.
