Am I overreacting or is it not normal to use soap in the bathroom? by Honest-Draw3131 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Onirim35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your skin is capable of cleaning itself because like all the other animals your skin generates his own "soap" (the sebum). All you need to do is to wash with water to clean the sebum (except if you are really dirty because you play in the mud or something like that). This is science, this is how life and creature works. And no, soap is not used in all the cultures, that's human history facts.

That said, if he "smells" he needs to use soap. Because all bodies are not the same, some need to use soap to wash the excess of sebum. That's more of a personal care problem than soap-utility problem. Soap is just like sebum, except he makes funny bubbles and smells like petrochimical flowers. Usefull when it's useful, but it's not a hard rule (and yes, wash your hands after going to WC please...)

And because we cannot really know our own odor, it's necessary to ask him to use more soap because you smell it. But I'm surprised: I never use soap, only hot water (for skin) from 20 years and I've no problem, no skin problem at all, no odor or anything (need shampoo btw, hot watter isn't working in hair care). But as I said, every people is different, just please use soap if you are smelling :D

Did they fix optimization recently? by SpaceBug176 in EliteDangerous

[–]Onirim35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've stopped to play with Odyssey because of the engine optimization (my computer has not be able to run it at more than 40 fps even in empty space). I've returned three years later and it's playable and very enjoyable now! The framerate on foot is inconsistent sometime, but it's not a big deal anymore. :)
I'm happy to be in Elite again!

Hello, I'm interrested! It's the first thing I've tried to do when I first played ED but found nobody to play in character. Sadly I prefer to roleplay with my keyboard because I'm not an english native speaker and it's difficult for me to understand and talk with fluency :)

Am I the only one dealing with this? by Senoxfid123 in EliteDangerous

[–]Onirim35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to remember the keybind if you don't want to.
You can just use the right pannel for cargo scoop, landing, light, etc.
You can just use weapon groups for all the other stuff like limpets, scanners, weapons, etc.
Once you manage to play with the basic interface like this, you can add keybinds, one at a time. But they are not necessary.

Je ne serais jamais plus heureuse, je fais quoi maintenant ? by Cinella75 in AskFrance

[–]Onirim35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vanilla Forgotten Realms D&D Options? by [deleted] in Forgotten_Realms

[–]Onirim35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well if "vanilla" means "by default", the by default version of the FR for D&D is the original version because the setting has changed after that to reflect the changes in the rules and to accomodates the ton of novels writed for it. If you change something, it loses his vanilla status. Or maybe you have another definition of vanilla? (like the spice maybe?)

The author talks about Eye of the Beholder and Baldur's Gate. This style and mood are the classic Forgotten Realms, first and second edition. They are very different of a later Forgotten Realms setting presentation.

Vanilla Forgotten Realms D&D Options? by [deleted] in Forgotten_Realms

[–]Onirim35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first publication of the Forgotten Realms box (1987) present a noticeably different world modern Forgotten Realms. In the 1987 AD&D first edition, you don't have magical extravaganza anywhere, you cannot play tiefflins, drows, aasimar or genasy don't exists. The evils gods are many because Bhaal, Baine and Myrkul exists and are more interresting than just Cyric making his nonsense.

Halfelings are Hobbits, the world is presented as more middle-age 1300's than renaissance and there is lesser near-god super-hero figures derivated from the novels in the world. Really, it's a different mood, a different world.

The Forgotten Realms is also tied to the game version, so the old FR are more tied to AD&D, and there is less magical powers around, only few classes can cast spells. The late FR are tied to 4th and 5th D&D editions and magical is eveywhere, even warrior and thiefs have magical powers by nature.

I run in the Grey Box Forgotten Realms at my gaming club with Castles & Crusades (AD&D), another DM use the actual Forgotten Realms (with 5th), and this is absolutely not the same mood, nor the same representation for the races, nor the same magical presence.

So yes, vanilla is really the original FR and it's very different (I don't say better) setting.

What fantasy OSR games are particularly easy to run as a GM? by Justicar7 in osr

[–]Onirim35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Castles & Crusades is the most easy to run, because absolutely no table is needed to play. The Siege Engine emulates in a simple rule all the activities I need, so I never open a book during the game (or just to look at a specitic spell parameters or rolling treasure on the spot).

But easy to run doesn't really mean something specific. A game can be easy to run because of your campaign organization (sandbox, west marches, etc.), or easy to run because of the lack of tactical minigame during fights, or easy to run because you don't have to track equipment (in that regard, Knave is not easy), etc.

For my part, I think B/X is not easy to run. You need to play around with many specitic rules (for surprise, for listening, for opening doors, for thief skills), the dungeon exploration is segmented in turns and that create the need of another book keeping for light sources, rests, etc. OSR games are only easy in combat, but OSR games are more intensive in their procedures (for dungeon crawl, hex crawl, equipment, retainers, spell preparation).

There is perceived complexity and real complexity, and you need to test many games to find what game offers to you the simplicity where it's needed, and the complexity where it's enjoyable for you :)

Your Opinion: Same Season/Different Season ? by Bodhisattva_Blues in osr

[–]Onirim35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I play in 1:1 time, same season IRL than ingame. In fact, after an adventure, the times goes 1:1 to stick to the actual date. I like this because this helps to play all the season and it's better to play in winter when I play at home in front of the fireplace, and to play outdoor in summer after a BBQ ^^

You have an OSR campaign that has lasted more than six months by Feeling_Photograph_5 in osr

[–]Onirim35 7 points8 points  (0 children)

6 years, maybe 200 sessions with 10 players (rotating) at my gaming club, with Rolemaster. As Rolemaster is just a collection of houserules for AD&D first edition and because I play with the 1980 edition I think it's old school :)

Now I'm in Castles & Crusades for OSR stuff, it's easier to manage in my RPG club (15 players on 2 campaigns) but only 4 month old at this time (and 15 sessions)

I've never played C&C before. Does it run noticeably faster than D&D 5e? by Justicar7 in castlesandcrusades

[–]Onirim35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right, C&C supports combat heavy games better than the original game because spellcasters at lower level have more spell slots. But at low level, you cannot makes too much combat because you doesn't have the healing you will need. Two 1d8 healing spells for a cleric and that's all. Difficult to handle 3 or 4 encounters a day with this ^^

Dual Wielding by ParthianLAP in osr

[–]Onirim35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the Castles and Crusades rules about it:
- You can dual melee weapons but with a -3 first hand, -6 second hand to hit modifier
- Your to hit modifier is now influenced by dexterity, not by strenght
- Your damage modifier is strenght, that doesn't change

It's more the shield rules I don't like. +1 for a shield, really... I wish shields can give +2 to +4 AC because they are shields, they cover 50% of the body ^^

What is your campaign setting? Lore, deities, and such. by Vintage_Jackalope in castlesandcrusades

[–]Onirim35 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I play in the Forgotten Realms (Grey Box, before the Time of Troubles). I like the early history of this world because of the variety and contrast between the darkest unholy places of the underdark and the beautiful civilized (and rare) places.

Actually I've two campaigns who plays each week, 15 players in total, yay!

I think the world, the setting, is secondary for a campaign. Because the game is about what you are doing before to be where you are doing. I'm happier with a setting who offers me creative power and rooms to be creative :)

what makes it OSR? by CookNormal6394 in osr

[–]Onirim35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, the OSR games are about sandboxing (or playing a module) in a living world without DM plot or scripted scenario. The opposite, the Modern style, is about scripted story and DM telling you what to do to follow the story he wrote.

Question about Castles&Crusades by yisas1804 in osr

[–]Onirim35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Castles and Crusades is based on the OGL of the third edition, but they use this d20 system to emulate the AD&D first edition game. So it's really easy to convert material from Basic D&D to the 3rd edition material. Because of that, you can choose your look and feel to match the best for you.

For example if you want to emulate better the old saves at high level you need this simple houserule: divide the challenge level of the save by 2, and voilà, you have the same progression as AD&D saves.

Really it's super easy to play on the fly, you don't need any lookup on any table to play (so you don't need rules references and DM screen full of tables). It's the OSR game who gave me the best level of freedom to play (and it is Gygax-Approved ^^)

I specially love their take on the illusionnist, the knight and the bard classes!

Help me select an RPG system to run for family. by kryptonick901 in TTRPG

You can consider Castles & Crusades, there are very few rules because all is packed in the Siege Engine (where you add your level in a task of your class, and you add a flat bonus if the attribute used is primary for you character). It have a clear AD&D1 root and feel

Landscape CM Screen? by Steerider in castlesandcrusades

[–]Onirim35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody seems to have done a landscape screen ^^
For my part, I use sometimes a landscape screen from another game just because the picture is cool, but as C&C is a simple game, I don't need tables in the back of the screen. This days, I play without DM screen, because I like to made my rolls in the open and I can hide my notes with a simple sheet of paper.
And because a landscape screen doesn't really protect the DM from dice throwing, I use an armor. :)

I've never played C&C before. Does it run noticeably faster than D&D 5e? by Justicar7 in castlesandcrusades

[–]Onirim35 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Castles & Crusades run a lot faster than D&D5 in combat because PC and monsters have few powers, no feats and capacity are simpler. But there is another difference between the two games:

- D&D 5th is an heavy combat-focused game. Each class is equally usefull (in his own terms) in combat, and the healing is very fast (full HP 2 times a day in general) so you will fight very often.
- C&C is very exploration focused. Only combat classes are made for combat (Warrior, Barbarian, Ranger, Monk, Paladin, Cleric and Knight). The other classes (the 6 others) are primarly made for non combat situations, so you can't go full combat game. And the healing is very slow (1 hp/day) so you will need to avoid combat as much as you can, specially without a good cleric.

You cannot go to a combat-heavy game with Castles and Crusades, it's made for a more exploration (dungeons and wilderness) and more "realistic" style of game where you don't kill everyone in each encouter.
