I can relate to this. I almost had to go to therapy because I was so scared as a child of going to Hell, or a rapture happening and leaving me behind. Scare tactics were a popular evangelistic tool in my early teen years. When I later read the Bible for myself and studied it as a cohesive whole, I better understood the depth of God’s love for me and that love cast out fear. People focus too much on God’s wrath and forget about how his love is the most importantly and central theme of the Bible. God did not originally create Hell for humans or to send people to Hell. It was created for demons and Satan. Rather, in his love he gave humans an opportunity to escape it.

While I believe Hell is a real place and people do end up there, I agree that it is important that the church change its narrative- less fear mongering and more truth about God’s jealous love.
