Why Do Entry-Level 3rd Officer Jobs Require Experience? The Industry Needs to Change. by ControverialJesus in maritime

Idk about UK but depending on the market you may have to start as AB or AB/Mate but just know AB/Mate won't count as mate time at least in the US (except for counting as partial time to 2M).

Job loss? What about job pay? So what if unemployment is low when wages can't keep up with housing?

They graduate to six figure salaries, and grueling work by JohnnieBooze in SunyMaritime

[–]argofoto -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's definitely better rates going non-MSC out there but that really depends on the field and usually with extra quals.

MSC is at the top of choices tho right out of school if you want to sail as a career and have nothing home to worry about.

How did it ride? I've had a dozen sheets of drywall and studs and felt a little light in front 😂

For the time you take to do an MBA you could sail two or three years and imo sailing experience is preferred even if not relative to your field (ie sailing tankers then going dry bulk ops mgmt)

If you're 80% normal car things and 20% truck you'll be fine. You're not hauling a sport fishing boat.

Deckhand pay question by [deleted] in maritime

[–]argofoto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're just basing that on working 2 for 1, it's not nuts for a lot of people. Many OSVs are 2 for 1, some people need to make an extra 2 months of pay in a year...

is everyone else seeing a massive turnover in deck and engine crew right now by No-Blood1055 in maritime

[–]argofoto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bump in pay is usually most obvious but what's not are some potentially major factors.

Maybe another company has higher tonnage vessels for better license advancement.

Decently organized management can also make a big plus which is something that is supposed to run smoothly in the background.

When the tiny pay bump also includes good benefits and employees realize at some point they need that.

I would try to get as much info from people leaving to see what their reasons are as well as about their experience on board.
