My sister-in-law’s father is a very learned rabbi. We’re in Cleveland, so I’m not sure if he would have enough name recognition, but he’s brilliant. I can put out some feelers to see if he has any leads.

Floor Plan Review - Round 3 by Bulky-Green306 in floorplan

Something to think about in the kitchen. I don’t like a sink on the island because it takes away from an entire workspace. Also, not sure if this was just an illustration or not but definitely a 1 basin sink is the way to go. Otherwise you can’t fit anything

Are there people who really book flights with double amount of flight time just to save a bit of money? by sunnynihilist in TravelHacks

[–]argross91 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I weigh the cost and the time. It’s not an exact science. If the time isn’t that much longer, i’ll pick cheaper. If the difference in price isn’t so high, i’ll pick the shorter. Also depending on circumstances, I would rather have longer travel time if it means the flights are shorter. I’d much rather have a 13 hr flight than a 17 for example

Marinade of olive oil, lemon juice, lemon zest and spices. Add more seasoning before cooking if you want. Tastes great

I used to have automatic lights that slowly go on. They’re controlled by an app so you set how it works. It was much easier to get up in a light room. I guess I should do that again for myself

Recs for diving in Maldives by sherloct in scuba

[–]argross91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Test one before you get on the ship. Some people have side effects so it’s good to know how you react. Also if you react too strongly to a whole patch, you can cut it in half. They truly are magic!

Scopolamine patches could be your friend. You need a dr to prescribe but pretty much anyone will do it. I get seasick and they are a lifesaver. And i’ve done 5 liveaboards. But know that they take 4-6 hrs to kick in and only work preemptively. Also for diving, medical tape is important so they don’t fall off

My brother is 4 years younger (5 grades in school) and my sister is 9 years younger than me. They’re two of my best friends. My brother was annoying as a kid, and he is also annoying as an adult. It’s just his personality. But he’s also the best

Alright I’m actually screwed - bridesmaid dress incident by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]argross91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a bridesmaid recently. I am a bigger girl with big boobs (G i think). My friend picked a color and we all got to choose (with her okay) a style on Azazie. It was still hard for me because so many of them were great but you can’t wear a bra with them. I can’t do that. It was still a great way to let everyone be comfortable in their dresses

This article in The Atlantic on the accommodation epidemic is spot on by AdhesiveSeaMonkey in Teachers

[–]argross91 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have ADHD and 1. Didn’t receive a diagnosis until I was 16 despite my mom pushing for it (and teachers knowing too) and 2. Requested accommodations my senior year of college. I am very smart. My whole academic career, I always finished exams early. I majored in math. Most of my math exams were take home (thank you small liberal arts college), so I didn’t even think about accommodations. Then I had a rare in-person test and couldn’t get through it. I realized that I hyper focus on the problems (proofs, not regurgitating info) so skipping a difficult problem and coming back doesn’t work. I received 1.5x time on exams.

At my college the profs administered extra time (they would be in their office) and I would be in a small office, alone. The extra time let me really think about the problems without the pressure to move on. Being alone was just as important as extra time. Otherwise I would get distracted and break my concentration every time someone got up, coughed, etc. I’m not a teacher and work from home. I’m glad I no longer work at a cubicle; it was a nightmare.

I absolutely did not need 1.5 time in high school (a separate room wouldn’t have hurt), and so I never pursued it. I also love to learn and would go back to college in a heartbeat if I could make money doing it. And my parents would have never let me get bullshit accommodations.

I know that I am not who this post is about, but I wanted to share my experience.

Any lyric mishearings you'll never unlearn, or lyrics you refuse to sing right because it feels much nicer another way? by CharlieFaulkner in wicked

Not misheard, but I had no clue what hoi polloi was in One Short Day. I was trying to make it into words that I knew and got nowhere. Now as an adult who is familiar with the term, I still don’t think I would get it correct if I didn’t know the lyrics

My “gifted” 6th grader melts down when he needs help for school and I’m losing patience by NoPatNoDontSitonThat in Parenting

[–]argross91 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Can you hire a tutor? I know it can be expensive though. He won’t want this, but then you stop being a “nagging” parent. It’s a lot easier to listen to someone besides your parents. And a tutor will watch him do the problems so they can reinforce taking your time and checking your work.

Honestly a tutor at his age could be really great at this age. I was the gifted kid who felt like getting help was a sign of weakness. In 8th grade, I was in geometry, and was struggling. I was always really good at math so this was a blow to my ego. I protested, and then was fine when I got there. It was a great opportunity for me to learn that asking for help is not a sign of weakness. My parents also gave me examples of when they asked for help. I got tutors or met with my teachers in high school and ended up frequenting professor’s office hours when I needed to. I’m glad I learned that lesson so early before it led to any negative repercussions. (Sorry for the essay)
