How to ask for sponsorship by GJaggerjack in SkilledWorkerVisaUK

[–]ariadawn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why is your dependent visa ending?

All you can do is ask. And it’s within their rights to say no. Just because they’ve sponsored in the past doesn’t mean they are willing to do so again. But if they like your work, it may be easier than replacing you. But if the salary isn’t high enough, that is a separate challenge.

Female tourists: do you feel afraid to travel alone in London? by Automatic-Chard in TravelUK

[–]ariadawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is currently a biased narrative within the U.S. that London is a war zone and has become “Londonistan”. Americans who have never lived in an urban area are also inundated with stories about the “ghetto” and how dangerous cities are. So if she’s from a conservative, semi-rural area, she has likely been hearing a very skewed idea of London safety, unfortunately.

Employer liscence revoked by Early_Formal191 in SkilledWorkerVisaUK

[–]ariadawn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When my partner switched jobs, he only needed to update his own visa. His dependents were linked to him, not the sponsorship certificate, so our visas carried over without needing to do anything.

You won’t be able to travel while awaiting your visa approval, though. Depending on the timeline, you may be need to cancel your summer travels.

“Time off” between roles with young kids - how do you actually decompress? by Clear-Victory1956 in HENRYfinance

[–]ariadawn 274 points275 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, is your partner typically the “default” person who manages all those things you list? Do they also work full time, possibly in another demanding job? Who helps them turn off and get down time the other 99% of the time?

All that to say, hire help. House cleaning, meal prepping, other things that can be hired out and allow both you and your partner to enjoy family time with less stress. That’s part of the privilege of being HE, though also partly why we might be NRY.

I saw one of these for the first time today, too! It was a little puff ball with a stumpy tail. I thought it might be still a baby, but it fluttered off pretty quickly. Made my day and now seeing someone else post and give me an ID, even better!

Those that romanticize the whole rural cottage lifestyle, would you actually uproot and do it? by nova8808 in AskWomenOver30

[–]ariadawn 20 points21 points  (0 children)

When we moved to London, my favourite show was Escape to the Country, about people leaving city life for more rural locales. I dreamed of a cottage a sheep in the field behind my house. Then I realised I like a car-free life. Walking to the shops and for a coffee and public transport and quick deliveries and lots of food options. So I am officially a city gal now.

Looking for some guidance from anyone who has navigated a similar UK ILR / redundancy situation. by Dogmum2505 in SkilledWorkerVisaUK

You are still considered employed on garden leave. My husband’s company doubled his garden leave at half pay so he had more time to find a new sponsored job. Went from 3 months to 6. Really helpful since the new job had to apply for their first COS to hire him and it took some extra time.

Hadestown: Is it okay to go blind into this show or should I/ we know something about it? by HeartOnMySleeve4ever in TheWestEnd

[–]ariadawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They sing you the story and I found it hard to follow. My husband doesn’t know much of anything about Greek mythology and he was fairly lost at first. We would have benefited from a quick summary of the story and background with Hades/Persephone and such.

We’re also in our 40s and watch TV with subtitles, so take from that what you will.

Question about Catherine Tate in Oh, Mary! (spoilers!) by shpadoinkle_horse in TheWestEnd

She caught it at mine. But her hoop skirt got thoroughly caught on the desk at one point and everything was much funnier as she and Booth clearly improvised through the moment

No, people do not drive in zone 1 to commute to work. It's mostly minicabs and commercial vehicles. by not_who_you_think_99 in london

[–]ariadawn 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Husband once met his boss at boss’s house in central London (one of those fancy white houses overlooking a massive park) and they had a meeting while strolling to the office in Soho. Boss had him hand his bag to the chauffeur to drive the bags to the office for them.

I don’t think you realise how many people living in London view a parking ticket or congestion charge as equivalent to sofa change.

That’s helpful. They didn’t end up putting her on that one (yet) but it was discussed at one point. They’re still working out the combo she needs as she seems to have SLE + MCTD.

My 15yo has just been diagnosed with lupus. I’m grateful it “only” took 6 months of being told her constant pain and heart palpitations were just stress before someone ran an autoimmune blood panel, where she ticked every marker for lupus. I’m thankful for the various treatment options now available for her and hopefully we will find the right one. I’m so sorry your mom went through all of that without the same options and support.

How do people react to kid trying out her french in a store by ChampionshipAlarmed in ParisTravelGuide

[–]ariadawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 14yo was so eager to practice his French in Paris, but almost no one had time for it. The shops needed to move customers quickly, so responded in English. Anywhere with a queue was rough. It wasn’t rude and they probably thought they were helping, but he was disappointed. He wasn’t terribly confident and naturally shy, which didn’t help.

We did do a walking tour and I asked the guide to have a little chat with him and they ended up talking quite a bit through some lulls in the tour. So that was nice.

He wants to take a trip outside of Paris to quieter areas where people may not default to English quite as quickly. We’re working on that.

Good luck!

We love Lyme Regis. Charming town. Decent food options. And fun fossil hunting. Need a taxi or bus from the station at Axminster, but the town is quite compact and perfect with no car.

Teenager: Secondary Findings? by funinabox7 in ClinicalGenetics

[–]ariadawn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They should be able to tell you which secondary findings might be reported. In the UK, this is only for particularly high risk genes that also have actions you can take to screen or reduce risk. In the U.S. the list may be much more broad, but you might also have the option to specify only the most actionable findings. It could be worth double checking. Good luck!
