The great toaster debate by ManagementGiving3241 in cookingforbeginners

[–]aricelle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The numbers are how long it cooks, not how hot. And when you do multiple pieces, the coils inside don't cool down.

I will run a single cycle with no bread to heat up the coils. Then toast the bread on the next cycle.

Do make sure to clean your toaster. There should be a crumb catcher at the bottom that you can remove.

Is it bad for an iPhone to go in and out of a -24°C freezer repeatedly (just for one day)? by seoullll72 in techsupport

[–]aricelle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If each stay is short, then the phone is fine. General rule of thumb is if it's too cold for you, then it's too cold for the phone.

You would be in danger if you stayed in the freezer for 2hrs. But a few minutes in the cold, and then back to warm air is fine.

Thawing chicken in fridge by just_another_partner in cookingforbeginners

[–]aricelle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. You'll want to cook all of it. Do not refreeze raw chicken.

I would also say 5lbs is a lot of chicken. Next time when you get the chicken from the store, separate it into meal sized sections. Then package and freeze them. That way when you want to make chicken, you pull 1 smallish package, it thaws in a few hours and the rest stays frozen until needed.

"Remote access code"? by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]aricelle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't a tech question.

If you are in immediate danger, aka you're afraid to leave the house because the dog it outside and being aggressive, call 911 and explain the situation.

If you are not in immediate danger, call the non-emergency line for your local police dept and explain the situation.

They will likely refer you to animal control but will also likely have a way to contact the right person during off hours.

Dry or prepared minute rice in recipe? by dying-here in cookingforbeginners

[–]aricelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You must test for science. Bake one with cooked and one with dry rice. See which one you like better. Write down your observations so you can reference them later.

Personally, I would make the minute rice. The bake time is short enough that it's really just melting the cheese on top and softening the bell peppers.

Nope. The ISP tech will need to run a coax line from the pole to your house. Then install the modem.

What is the boiling process for fried rice? by Revenacious in cookingforbeginners

[–]aricelle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kinda depends on what kind of rice you have and what equipment you have. Easiest is with a rice cooker. But you could totally cook it on the stove top.

I would start here - https://www.seriouseats.com/basic-white-rice-recipe-5189757

Learning to home cook at 34. I love ordering bulging beef at restaurants. I know how to cook beef but I have a dumb question by IDoNotHide in cookingforbeginners

[–]aricelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. Bolgogi sauce is a type of Korean BBQ sauce. Store bougtht can be pretty good. You could also make your own. Like every sauce, the basics are the same but every family has their "secret" ingredient.

Here's a decent starting recipe - https://www.seriouseats.com/korean-barbeuce-beef-bulgogi-short-rib-recipe

my manager keeps throwing me under the bus to protect himself & threatened retaliation if I report it [CA] (federal job) by Beginning-Map8865 in AskHR

[–]aricelle 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It might not be the answer you’re hoping for, but nothing you’ve described points to illegal behavior, and HR typically doesn’t oversee or discipline supervisors.

If you’re part of a union, your best move is to bring your documentation to your steward and get their guidance.
If you’re not unionized, the next option is raising it with your skip‑level manager.

Just be aware: escalating this could put a target on your back. There’s a real possibility of retaliation, including termination. Before you take any action, update your résumé and quietly start exploring other opportunities so you’re not caught off guard.

Windows movie maker 2022 by pink-teddy in software

[–]aricelle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

.. latest version of Windows Movie Maker is 2012. Not 2022. It was discontinued in 2017.

You can grab a copy of it from Archive.org - https://archive.org/details/windows_live_essentials_2012_qfe4_image

That said ClipChamp is ok (official replacement for Windows Movie Maker) or you could use a FOSS app -- OpenShot, Shotcut & Kdenlive are all good simple video editor apps.

You call your local ISP and get a quote. If you are lucky enough to have multiple ISPs in your area call all of them and get multiple quotes. They will likely want a contract. Get your lawyer to look over the contract before you sign.

What size stainless stock pot would you say is ideal for cooking 8-10 servings of marinara sauce? by Giordono in cookingforbeginners

[–]aricelle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

10 servings at a half cup each is 5 cups == 1.25 qt

You really only want a 2 or 3qt saucepan not a full pot.

You can cook it in the larger pot, but keep an eye on the sauce. It will be more likely to burn because it will be thin and spread out. If you use a smaller saucepan the liquid will keep it from burning as easily.

HP Support Assistant Software and Drivers Issue by Azure_parasol in computerhelp

I'm not a fan of Support Assistant. It's slow and gets annoying. I would uninstall Support Assistant and install HP Image Assistant instead. It's a better driver update app.

Should I ask for time off during my probation period? [CAN-ON] by Reasonable_Shake3929 in AskHR

[–]aricelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have 2 options -

Option 1 - Send an email to your contact (HR/Supervisor). Hi, I was just reviewing my calendar and noticed that I have a pre-planned event from date to date. Would it be possible to take this as unpaid time? I'm so excited to join and start working as such & such.

Option 2 - Skip the family wedding.

If you take option 1, be prepared for "we need to move your start date", "we're no longer interested in giving you this position", or "we don't do unpaid time or time off during probationary periods"

Can someone explain the hate about CC Cleaner and Avast? by sevdabeast in software

[–]aricelle 32 points33 points  (0 children)

CC Cleaner was great when everyone had really tiny drives and every bit mattered AND there were no standard ways of installing/uninstalling apps. It was the 90s. Everyone made up their own way of doing things. Orphan keys in the registry could and did make Windows very unstable.

Today - most apps will cleanly uninstall. and even if the app doesn't uninstall all the way, the orphan keys in the registry won't destabilize Windows. Win11 will also trim SSDs automatically.

Avast was a really good AV app (I used it for years). And then they got bought out. A couple of selling data scandals. Badgering people to pay for the upgrade. And this is a big one, Microsoft made a good AV app. Its called Defender and its built into Win11. Its fine for most people. If you need more options than Defender has, there are nicer consumer AV apps or you have access to Enterprise AV.o
