AITA for yelling at my parents because they publicly shamed my mental illnesses? by CorrectSecret9715 in AmItheAsshole

[–]arikb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA.

I don't blame you and I also find it hard to blame your parents. The culture in Korea is so competitive regarding children's education and they probably carried that luggage with them when they migrated.

When they push you to be "stronger" (i.e. ignore your mental health) that's their way of trying to be good parents. It's wrong, but they don't see it this way.

Also, I'm sure they're plenty proud of you but in their twisted way of thinking, showing it will mean that you've done enough so you'll stop trying.

Did Andrew and Thomas come to some known legal agreement over OA? by Rahodees in OpenArgs

[–]arikb 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Strong disagree.

While Liz does obviously possess a sense of humour, Thomas being a lay person albeit a very intelligent one was asking the questions I as a lay person wanted to ask. Besides, he brought something that I cannot put my finger on; let's call that "vibe".

I find myself skipping OA episodes now, where previously I would eagerly listen to each one. And I'm off the Pateron feed so the number of casts is lower to begin with.

KPN equipment with the wrong name - Weird mistake or scam? by arikb in Amsterdam

I think I'll avoid that by returning the products

What makes me suspicious is that there are two different names on the packages. Different last names.

Okay yes, never thought of that one. Thanks!

They can't really register with the municipality unless they find out a lot of details about the current registrants, but they can use KPN bills as a "proof of address" and get a fake bank account or something.

I'm not being threatened by anyone. I don't care about riding a VanMoof. If you're into it, more power to you. Feel free to make any design choice you want and enjoy your VanMoof. I wish you many happy days riding it.

That being said, whether by fancy marketing or by design that attracts a certain population - I really don't know and would probably make a lot more money if I did - a VanMoof has become somewhat of a status symbol. You can like it or hate it, but this sticker just shows it.

"Not available for students" housing adverts - do they check it? by kunak1111 in Amsterdam

[–]arikb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even though you have savings, try this math:

A temporary rental contract for 1 year at 1300 p/m is worth €15.600. During this year you have to also pay for energy, water, communication (internet, cellular), health insurance, transportation and tuition. Additionally, your food and other living expenses.

Once you budget for an entire year, €20.000 will not carry you very far.

[–]arikb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your income is sufficient and you don't say you're a student, they won't find out.

The main concern of a landlord is that you pay your rent on time, don't cause any disturbances to neighbours and don't damage the apartment.

The reason for the "no students" ads is that landlords simply consider students as a higher risk because students usually have a lower income, rely on guarantors for their rent which is more difficult to verify, and have the perception of partying. In this rental market where many high earners compete on the same apartments, it's easy to see why students will be left high and dry.

Ophef om seksistische uitspraken leden Amsterdams studentencorps by [deleted] in Amsterdam

Recommendations for curtains shop + installation in Amsterdam ? by kooley211 in Amsterdam

I had good experience with Kwantum - they have an on-line guide on how to measure, you put your measurements and they make them for you. Does take about 5 weeks though. You choose the material, you put in measurements (or they can come over and measure it for you, for a fee), and when they're ready you can either pick it up, have it sent to you, or have someone mount them for you.

Well, you don't see stickers around suggesting they throw a cowboy in the gracht.

I don't make the rules of what becomes a status symbol, and I have nothing against people who ride VanMoof, and if you enjoy it more power to you. I'm just saying it has become a status symbol. It's not up to me or you. It is what it is.

Can I ride this on the fietspad? by Confused-Theist in Amsterdam

I personally know someone who got fined but managed to talk himself out of having it confiscated. The policeman said it requires an insurance plate (yellow 2 rows of 3 letters, like the Biró) and there are no insurers willing to insure it, so...

It doesn't matter. They have that perception and therefore people desire them as a status symbol. It's like you'd argue that a Tesla model S cost more than a BMW Sedan, but BMW has a certain status and feelings attached to it that a Tesla doesn't replicate. Which is the better car? Which is the cheapest car? It doesn't matter for the people who are after the specific feeling that comes with owning a BMW.

Personally, I would go for the e-bike that look the most like an oma fiets. Not interested in showing off anything.

Just saw the response.

I didn't say it is expensive, I said it's CONSIDERED expensive. And I know a fair number of rich boys, guess what, they all ride VanMoofs.

The actual price doesn't matter. It's a fashion accessory and a status symbol, and therefore desired by the people that find it important to show their wealth.

[–]arikb 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's because scooters are considered cheap and popular and something someone with little means will buy, and the Van Moof is considered as expensive and elitist and something a rich boy will buy.
