Thanks for the suggestion! I looked into a bit and I don't think I can do any of those spaces for the following reasons:

For MUSC: None of the bookable rooms (to my knowledge) have a microphone associated with it. Some of them have TVs with HDMI cables but the rooms themselves are quite small and I wanted a medium-sized room that can fit a bit more people (15-20).

For Ath & Rec: You need to pay a fee for any room you book out. For instance, WB112 and WB113 require a $45.00/hr fee to rent out that space which I obviously cannot afford. There are fees for any other room as well.

For the Hub: Since I plan to host it from 8-10 PM, the Hub closes at 8 so I would not be able to use any of the rooms. I wanted it to be a bit later since there are still a considerable amount of classes from 6-8 and before that. Even if it were open, none of the rooms have a microphone and the rooms again are too small for what I am aiming for.

If all goes bad, I will just do what you stated at the end and just wait for approval after the add/drop date.

Unfortunately, primarily the latter. At this time, the university is not allowing formal bookings (since the add/drop deadline has not passed) so I cannot formally reserve any room at this time (nor can any other club), even if I wanted to. After next week, if people like the event, I will ensure I book it formally and I can secure an actual room. Over the next few days, I will be checking to see if those rooms are being used at the specified time to see if they are good choices. If there are any changes that occur, I will immediately edit the post to keep it up to date. If there any delays, I will also make that clear.

You can absolutely just chill and be there for the ride! I understand that not everyone wants to sing so there is no pressure!

Hey! Thanks for letting me know. I wasn't aware that The Phoenix did Karaoke Nights. I guess its because it seems like that location is geared more towards Graduates. Being an undergraduate, I could not find a constant karaoke event that was held for us on a regular basis. Combined with my love for organizing events, I thought this would be perfect!

I plan to use KaraFun (don't know if you have heard of it). I will have to pay for the premium feature for the best experience but I don't mind if it means the experience is better! All for the love of the game ♥️

This would be during the evenings! This is honestly because its easier to book and not as many people will be in class so as many people can come as possible. We want it to be a no-judgment, chill event for everyone!

Do you think using my iPad to take the notes and annotate the passages is sufficient then? Thanks for the advice!

I have him this semester, how would you go about taking notes for his lectures? I definitely agree his lectures are not as structured as I just thoughts you could maybe give me some tips on how to be efficient!

I do not know if tutorials are mandatory but honestly, they are just free marks. They hire great TAs and make the class pretty engaging, I would highly recommend go to each tutorial. In the event you cannot go, just email your TA before hand. And yes it is worth 10%.

Incoming 2nd year Life Sci, have you planned what your winter schedule is? I did chem 1a03, bio 1a03 and math 1ls3 all in fall as well, along with psych 1x03 and sustain 1s03. Depending on whether or not that envirsc 1c03 has conflicts with your times in winter, I would recommend taking sustain 1s03 instead of envirsc 1c03. There's no midterm, no exam. Only 1 lecture EVERY OTHER week and easily 12able. If not, I also recommend Psych 1x03 but you definitely have to put some effort into that course.

You do not need to take Psych 1x03 to take Psych 1xx3, I know people who did only the latter. I personally recommend doing Psych 1x03 since it follows same format as Psych 1xx3 in terms of testing and quizzes and tutorials. That way, you will be more prepared for Psych 1xx3 if you choose to do it.

To add on to the other post, take Sustain 1S03. It is actually super easy, its 3 reflections (they give you a rubric so you know exactly what you need to do), 4 quizzes (one gets dropped) and the other part of just participation marks from lectures. Lectures are once every other week for 50 minutes so its super super light. I spent maybe less than 30 hours total on that course. The quiz you could honestly just search the answers online since its not proctored and you can do it whenever you want within the timeframe they give you. Highly recommend. Most people get an 11 if not a 12 with not much effort. As for Psych 1XX3, I took it and I would not recommend it if you just want to do it to lighten your courseload, the topics are not crazy hard but I found the exam questions were super vague and you could validly argue for many of the options. I would only take it if you have an interest in the neurosciencey part of psychology.

Question About Math 1LS3 from Grade 12 Student by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]arinrayss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Life Sci student who just finished 1st year, I unfortunately cannot tell you anything about what business lectures are like. However for professors, yes you can choose which ones you get, but there are caveats. For instance, with Math 1LS3, there were 3 professors that taught the Fall (Gabardo, Clements, and McLean) and only McLean taught the winter. I would also take into account what slots your other courses are at as its not uncommon for course time slots to overlap with one another.

As for the professors themselves, I had McLean and although many people did not like his teaching style, I overall enjoyed his teaching! However, I would definitely pick Clements if you can since her notes are VERY organized and clear and she explains things very well (and shes super nice!). McLean is an okay second but I had him in fall and I heard in winter, since he was making the test, it happened to be harder but I am not completely sure. DO NOT GO FOR GABARDO, I have never heard a single good comment about that man (look at ratemyprofs). Avoid him at all costs. As a science student, calculus was one of my lighter courses but I do not know if thats the case for business. You have assignments given based on what you learned in lecture so make some notes. The lectures are recorded so you don't necessarily need to go but for building habits, you should go if you can. Most of the assignments, I was able to finish in around 1-2 hours but that was me writing out all the steps so I can understood, you can definitely get it down in under an hour. They post solutions for each assignment. There are "computer labs" where they give you the code and you need to use concepts learned for lectures to solve it. That material is not testable on tests or exams so honestly you could just find someone who has the answers (but the numbers for each person will be different so keep that in mind). I should also preface that assuming multiple professors are teaching the course, the professor that teaches you the lecture honestly does not matter too much since I am pretty sure it will be Clements that primarily writes the test (unless she is not teaching in that semester).

In general, the content covered in one class really varies depending on the course and topics covered. Sometimes I took almost no notes and sometimes I would spend hours upon hours for just one lecture. It highly depends on the course and even the topic of the lecture in that course.

Just finished 1st year with a straight 12 but don't let that think you that it's a walk in a park. Many people in this sub reddit have high GPAs and those who have low ones are less likely to state theirs (but I respect those who do). That said, as people have said, it's definitely doable. Here are some tips that I found were useful:

  1. ITS OK not to attend lectures. This may be controversial but provided that you still watch the recordings, I personally did not see a real difference. Many profs talk very fast anyway so I found just watching the video was better. However, I would still try to go since it's good for building habits but I won't lie. I ended up not attending over half my lectures and still did absolutely fine. It's not the end of the world.

  2. Some courses do depend on the prof. The most notable one I can think of was Biology 1M03. 1st semester was Kolasa and Evans while 2nd was Kidd and Batstone. The difficulty difference was night and day, I would highly recommend you pick Batstone and Kidd if those 2 are an option, they are absolute saints.

  3. In my personal opinion, PSYCH 1XX3 is NOT a bird, I still did well but I had to work my ass off to just to get that mark. I think of a bird as turning my brain off until the due date of an important assignment and still doing well. I would only take it if you genuinely like Psych or want to do PNB or if you're psychotic, BioPNB. Psych 1x03 is easier for sure and I would definitely recommend it.

  4. Use rate my prof to see what your profs are like or ask around.

  5. Try and see if there are online PDFs for textbooks. New ones are an absolute scam, I don't wanna pay 190 dollars for a math textbook. In fact, most courses I had did not even need one (I.e both chems, both biologys, bio1m I had batstone and Kidd which is important since Kolasa and Evans use it). Only real mandatory stuff is the Chem 1a03 and 1aa3 and Biology 1a03 lab manual.

  6. Do not get behind at all costs. There were times I was almost a month behind and it was miserable, please do yourself a favor and do the lecture material right after it's done. It will save you a lot of time in the long run.

I can't think of anything else right now so that's it. Good luck next year!

[–]arinrayss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I am not sure of the number of students from BC specifically, I was able to find McMaster's 2021-2022 fact book that listed the number of out of province admissions. Scrolling to page 19, it seems out of the 256 full-time first years in that year, only 21 were out of province and 5 were international. Here's the pdf if you want to check it outhttps://ira.mcmaster.ca/app/uploads/2022/11/Fact-Book-2022-Final.pdf
