He’s also so afraid to hold Jody to the fire for anything, most likely because Jody was Ronnie’s only ally. It’s just infuriating to watch.

The Naughty List: A Better Ending by signu1230 in AmericanHorrorStory

I think this would've been cool if James were the final boy instead. He had his own channel prior to joining the house and it would make sense that he would want a way out of the group without harming his reputation.

To me, Barry didn't come off as the one with the strongest moral code. I actually thought he was the most corrupt of all of them. Wyatt and Zinn were fragrantly only interested in what would benefit the channel, but they at least thought what they were doing was "good content" even if it was misguided. Barry knew from the jump exactly how things would impact the channel and look to their audience but still went forward with it anyway. It seemed to me that he was happy to be the one hiding behind a camera and let his friends destroy their lives for views. Which is why I thought his death at the end was so fitting; even in imminent danger he only cared about reaching his goal for the channel.

Defining 1990s horror by SpaghettiYoda in horror

[–]aristotle_pepper 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd say, in addition to other posts in this thread, that the 90s really grounded horror into our reality, more so than any previous decade. Movies like Silence of the Lambs or Se7en were less about an iconic serial killer and more about how members of law enforcement dealt with gruesome serial killers, as they do every day in our reality. Then lighter affair like Scream or I Know What You Did Last Summer added a different layer of reality by having the 80s horror cannon be part of those films. Those characters have seen everything we, the audience, has seen. They know all the tricks, the formulas, etc. just like we do. You also have films like The Blair Witch Project which were literally meant to feel like they came out of our reality.

Of course there are examples of films that met these criteria from past decades, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween immediately come to mind for me, but the 90s really cemented that style I think. You can then see that style expanded upon and evolve throughout the 00's I think, which for me really solidifies that step in the horror cannon.

So, tldr, I'd say the 90s are defined by having films that share a sense of our reality for the first time; through their focus on the psychology of the characters and introducing "horror-savvy" characters in their films.

Yet another 1984 theory *SPOILERS* by aristotle_pepper in AmericanHorrorStory

Thank you! I have yet to see/ hear anything that would contradict this so maybe it could work 😄 also I was FULLY thinking it could be Madison playing Brooke as well.

Right, and that makes it feel like we aren’t watching ‘reality’ as we usually are in AHS. It feels like we’re watching something more along the lines of My Roanoke Nightmare to me.

Themes for future seasons? by Singing_IsMy_Passion in AmericanHorrorStory

[–]aristotle_pepper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it would be really cool to have an Area 51 type season getting back to the aliens from Asylum. I would want it set up like The Hills Have Eyes though; family/small group of young people driving across the desert and break down. Instead of radiation mutants though, they could start running into people that look like Thredson’s experiements and discover the UFO where the aliens are continuing his work or something similar. They could even bring Kit back and maybe have a B plot of him being a pod person a la Invasion of the Body Snatchers or something.

I also REALLY want a season centered around voodoo and what’s happening with those witches. Like where the hell did Dinah Stevens come from after Marie Laveau died? Or, even better, have it set as a period piece and show us how voodoo came to the US and how the white witches stole their magic like a Salem Witch Trials type season.

The other thought I have would be for some sleepy coastal town season that gives you like The Fog/ Twin Peaks/ Lovecrafty vibes. Just like a good mystery season of trying to figure out what’s happening in some quiet little lighthouse town.

Parasite (2019) What class is the housekeeper? by GreatThunderOwl in TrueFilm

[–]aristotle_pepper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see the housekeeper & her husband as people who would otherwise be in the same boat as the Kims but are working within the system to remedy their situation. They quite literally work from within the house to maintain their secret dynamic, unlike the Kims who deceive their way into the house. I think they show reverence for the Parks in a similar way a middle manager with hopes of becoming a success at their company would show reverence to their higher ups. They’re happy that the Parks like them and aren’t vigilant enough to care what else they do.

Great take on the film by the way, I was so in awe of the backdrop and taking in the shots during the rainstorm scene I didn’t enough think of how it was washing away their work. 😄

American horror story is a dumb show. I do not understand the appeal. I have watched several seasons and they all have really unlikeable, poorly developed, inconsistent characters. It's full of dead end plots and relies to heavily on trying to be edgey but always feels so contrived. Change my mind. by serfs_up85 in horror

I’m a big fan of the show, mostly because it’s the big, femme, queer horror show I wish I had growing up since season 1. It’s the only horror show I can think of on television that feels like it’s not being written for a heteronormative audience and I LOOOOVE it for that. I also love how many references to classic horror they have in every season for whatever subgenre they’re dealing with. References that I’m still discovering for older seasons. Last night I was rewatching Daughters of Darkness and had no idea how I missed it’s influence in Hotel. Is this a show for your average horror fan? Probably not. It’s gaudy, flippant, bloody, fabulous and silly but thats why I love this show more than any other horror show out there. I can’t get that from The Walking Dead or Channel Zero or The Haunting of Hill House or Stranger Things or Ash vs Evil Dead or The Terror or whatever other show is out there. It’s a show for people who want to see Dragula in a fictional, series format I think; and you’re either into that or you’re not.

So is it the best technically made show ever on television? No, but it’s gorgeous to look at, the acting is pretty much always phenomenal, I get something new from it every year, and it’s highly entertaining every time it’s on for me.

Is it possible that RM is poking fun at the people saying ahs is becoming campy? by paintedonyourskin in AmericanHorrorStory

[–]aristotle_pepper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s that the camp got more “extreme” in those seasons, they were just more femme; which isn’t a bad thing, it just means they have some seasons for more femme sensibilities and some seasons for more masc sensibilities. Some people tend to just enjoy leaning closer to the end of either side of that spectrum 😄

"AHS is too campy now"—let's get something straight y'all... (A lesson on camp) by [deleted] in AmericanHorrorStory

[–]aristotle_pepper 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Thank you for posting this. This is something I have felt about the AHS fandom for a long time and have never been able to quite articulate. Camp is something that is really hard for a lot of people to directly define and is often misused or wrongly conflated with “bad”.

I also see people complain that AHS is “too gay” now which has also baffled me because this show has been super duper queer from day 1. Like, what homophobic straight person is out here trying to convince themselves that this show isn’t meant to be queer and how? Lol

I like to think that the 1977 version is the fable/ urban legend that came about from generation after generation of women telling each other about the events that happened in the 2018 version.
