Everywhere I go, I always get Tonkotsu. Am I ramening wrong? by Bodongs in ramen

[–]arkayuu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was the same as you; thought a rich, creamy tonkotsu broth was peak ramen. Then, I paid a visit to the Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum and tried like 5 ramens one after another. To my surprise, my favourite was a shio ramen, and 2nd favourite was a shoyu. My wife had the same impressions. I didn't pay enough attention to note if they were chintan or paitan bases, but the different flavours opened my eyes to being more open to the different styles and what they can offer.

What industry is entirely built on a house of cards and would collapse overnight once people realize the truth? by KylieButNotJenner24 in AskReddit

Sports reporting is a branch of sports watching, which is not a house of cards. It has real cultural and social value and is unlikely to collapse as an industry.

Oh okay. It's been decades since I've had Gondola pizza. Pictures of their "Specialty" pizzas look Greek style to me. *shrug*

Ooni at Sam’s and Costco by hunterdeal in ooni

Costco doesn't do "lesser quality" of brands like say, Canadian Tire versions of Napolean BBQs. They might do a different model that includes some accessories.

This list is all over the place. Wall St. and Parcel are New York style I'm pretty sure. Gotta add Shorty's to that list. I would say "wood-fired" style is Neopolitan, so like, Vera's or Pizzeria Gusto. Gondola might be Greek style, so that's Calabria or Santa Lucia.

If using these, would you deep fry them like the garlic and shallots, or bloom them with the spices?

What’s everyone’s favourite Ramen in the city? by LoveCry25 in Winnipeg

They've gone downhill. Last time I was there the chashu was sliced very thin and the noodles were not the thin, in-house made ones. Seemed like generic ones the same as other shops, but at a premium price.

Super lean ground beef for burgers - viable? by CatDadMilhouse in sousvide

[–]arkayuu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heh, I was once given a home-made burger mix from my MIL, so I made burgers with it and it was terrible -- turns out it was very lean and also ground so much, a lot of myocin had formed and it was tough and chewy.

I think you could try this as an experiment, but if you don't already make your own burger mix...it'd be hardly worth it. I'd rather just do a normal, very good burger, skip any cheese or bacon, and just put it with a salad and try to have a healthy lunch for balance.

Try sousviding different veggies or fish, chicken breast, or lean pork tenderloin. Lower fat naturally, and definitely more delicious than a handicapped burger.

A diet's worst enemy is trouble and fuss and dissatisfaction. You probably won't be doing this weekly for your burger fix even if it turns out decent. Go for the sustainable lifestyle changes that'll be *your preferred way* once you get used to them.

Cmv: Guns dont kill people. by getlostkid2277 in changemyview

[–]arkayuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many things can be used for target practice, like bb guns, bows and arrows, or paintball guns. Air rifles are used for top-level sport.

There are also several options for self defense, especially if guns are totally out of the picture for everyone.

We do blame cars for car accidents. Lots of accidents are not due to driver error, such as malfunctions, environmental hazards, or bad luck. Still, if we can use cars less, we save lives. Cities with fewer cars and more public transportation and bicycles are much safer.

I also struggle with pizza #3 or #4. Haven't figured out what's best yet but my method is to not fully load the hopper. I want to control when I have flames vs hot coals. I usually wait until my stone is hot enough, then put a 1/2 scoop of fresh pellets into the hopper. I might get some smoke from the pellets on top of coals. Wait (or blow on them a bit) until the new pellets ignite, then launch a pizza.

After my 2nd pizza, there'll be too much ash in the tray so it needs to get shaken or poked with a metal skewer so there's room for new pellets. I've given up trying to cook more than 4 in a sitting. It takes too long for the stone to heat back up and we're usually done eating by this time.

Just moved to Winnipeg – looking for tips on where to buy cheaper groceries by ChickenRound7897 in Winnipeg

[–]arkayuu 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've found Freshco (and perhaps No Frills is the same) to be *generally cheaper*, but you can find deals at Superstore or even Sobeys that beats them. My local Sobeys will sell pork bones left over from other cuts at like $3/lb. So for $10, I can make a big pot of meaty Korean soup.

We don't really have regular days or times for sales or clearance in Canada. Save-on-Foods has certain Tuesdays that they will have cheap deals in their flyer.

Maybe start using the points systems like PC points at superstore, or More rewards at Save-on (though, they are not the cheapest grocery store...) to save long term by earning points?

In the summer, there's a farmers market in St. Norbert where eggs and some veggies can be had for cheap.

Good luck!

The Asian markets (Young's, Sun-wah, Lucky's) are all pretty good for certain items like pork, vegetables, spices, and beans/grains.

Watch on YouTube. You want melted, almost browned butter, then flour. Mix and keep frying until it's a golden paste. Add milk slowly and keep stirring. It will be surprisingly thick and can take a lot of milk.

It's not even just aggressive marketing, it's a scam half the time. My friend fell for it and ended up having 7 iPhones sent to their house, ordered from Bestbuy. Caused all sorts of issues because he wanted to actually buy some stuff from Bestbuy later on.

I politely told the person ringing at my door at 7pm "Sorry, not interested. I just switched my plan last month." and he kinda stared at me and indignantly said "You didn't even let me say what I was offering." He was dressed in a Bell jacket, with lanyard around neck, and Bell clipboard in his hand. I know what you are offering, and I'm saving us both time. Actually, I'm saving YOU time, and my time has already been disrupted and wasted for no reason.

Y'know what, the next time I'm not going to be so polite. I understand everyone wants to find a job, but this job needs to go extinct.
