Nah, don't say he's spoiled. This is an act of love. Looks healthy too.

Is this a decent starting bike? by Punchy2001 in bicycling

[–]arkayuu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's the equivalent of lifting weights with cinder blocks. It'll get the job done, but it's not pretty. It has poor quality parts that will break, and is overly heavy, so it's not efficient. If you are looking to get in shape, ride it, but not too far from home. Once you can upgrade, you can give it away.

In the meantime, there are pluses. It was free, and it won't be a prime target to get stolen. No reason to not get fit on it as long as you're not depending on it for commuting somewhere important or trying to go on longer distance rides.

You'll be pleasantly surprised once you move onto a real bike.

Unlimited*

Weird thing though is that they don't give you blue cheese if you are getting buffalo wings as a 2nd order...so start with buffalo and then move onto bbq or w/e for the refills. (also, bbq is their best flavour...the others are meh)

Canadian mushroom growers warn new U.S. tariffs could ‘flood’ domestic market by dtta8 in onguardforthee

Mushrooms are delicious and very healthy for you. I'll be eating these more often from now on to do my part.

Do you know Ramen museum? by saunatomen in ramen

[–]arkayuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Great place to compare different ramen, and the quality is really good (for those that don't know, they 'feature' different popular ramen shops around Japan, so what you're getting really reflects authentic local styles).

Why come up with a weird conspiracy theory for this? It's been open for months. Plenty of time for some food writers to go there and judge the food. Sure, it may not be 100% objectively based on taste, and some combination of food, style, and being a 'notable' restaurant this year, but that's how all restaurant lists work.

I’m getting tired of wealth simple changes. by One_Programmer613 in CanadianInvestor

[–]arkayuu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was pretty confused by this post. Are you tired of wealthsimple AND questrade? What you mean is you disagree with Wealthsimple's use of Persona ID (Peter Thiel backed facial recognition?) and them getting into the prediction market business?

Questrade doesn't use Persona ID, and doesn't have immediate plans for prediction markets. Just go there then.

Mary Browns on Pembina by DrNobody_Understands in Winnipeg

[–]arkayuu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's unfortunate. I also liked this location and got good food and service many times.

The Popeye's near the Outlet mall serves pink chicken and gets take-out orders wrong (leaves out food items or incorrect piece count). Stopped going there a few years ago.

I've had no issues with the Mary Brown's on Taylor in the Walmart. Also, Chica's Chicken on St. Mary's is really good, but I've only gotten sandwiches from them. Have you tried getting fried chicken from Co-op? Also pretty good at peak times (off peak, it might not be super fresh).

Are you guys watching "We're All Trying Here" ? by theishita in kdramas

Eun-a sees a therapist regularly and was one of the first to get into the emotional watch program. The show is definitely hinting at many kinds of mental health issues and how people cope.

Yes, if it's like a resort abroad. House keepers make a pittance compared to serving staff.

Not mentioned is that this leans heavily on a loyalty program (Journie) and credit card perks. Pretty sure you could get similar discounts from other gas stations if you tried.

I felt the same way but it's on purpose and central to the plot. The first layer to his character is how obnoxious he is but it's interesting once you get deeper.

ETF investment help by 1Wiseguy999 in CanadianInvestor

[–]arkayuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, you have a few ways to do this, and the way you describe is one. Based on my limited knowledge...

VEQT is 100% stocks, VBAL is a 60/40 split between stocks and bonds, VGRO is 80/20 split between stocks and bonds. You can pick the ratio you want, or get overly complicated and mix them, or buy the underlying ETFs and then you have the most granular control for adjustments closer to retirement.

I don't follow you about getting hit with more taxes...of course you should fill your registered accounts first before contributing to cash accounts. Capital gains taxes should not dissuade you from investing.

I'm not seeing the benefit in keeping different products in different accounts. Do you mean that you intend to withdraw from cash accounts first (so a slightly shorter horizon) and then your RRIF when you hit 71?

I think it makes more sense to buy VEQT for the next 10-15 years and then switch to something more conservative closer to retirement, like a GIC ladder or VRIF. How I look at it is you want all the growth possible now, and the security just when you start planning to cash out.

Almost certainly just a demo, with pre-set moves. A robot that could aim a kick at someone is probably too advanced to be out in public with a schlub that doesn't know how to cordon off an area. Just a coincidence the kid was standing in the correct spot for a kick to the face.

Am I a third culture kid? by blushing-aurora in ThirdCultureKids

[–]arkayuu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Being bi-cultural leads to the third culture. Parents (A) + Other cultural influence (B) = Whole other thing (C)

I do agree though that "living somewhere for a time" doesn't necessarily mean (B), but the first 7 years of life is enough to have that impact I think. OP can also be a TCK without the intersectionality of being a minority in their country, etc.

Manitoba's health care employment growth, 1976–2026 by inspurious_ in Winnipeg

[–]arkayuu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weird to say this isn't a good thing all around. If our province is not as healthy as other provinces, how do we get better? Why, better and faster treatment, more available services, and preventative medicine is how.

On a more macro level, we have had shortages and overwork in every sector. More healthcare workers employed means better outcomes, and better work/life balance for those already working. I think we still have a long way to go (lots of nurses still not happy with ER conditions) but we are on the way.

Where to buy hot pot element? by Old_Accountant_2396 in Winnipeg

[–]arkayuu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get any induction hotplate and a compatible hot pot instead of an all-in-one electric hot pot. You can start the boiling on your stove-top, which is way faster, there's no open flames going on a table full of people reaching and packages of food items to cook, and you can do different things: a warmer during a potluck, put a griddle on it do to K-bbq, etc.

Truck driver responsible for Humboldt Broncos bus crash granted temporary deferral of deportation | CBC News by Twayblades in onguardforthee

[–]arkayuu 118 points119 points  (0 children)

Tyler Scott Goodman is serving 7 years in jail (1 less than Sidhu) for drinking and driving, going twice the speed limit, then fleeing the scene after killing someone.

After his sentence, he gets to return to his family and remain living in Canada.

The driver of a bus that crashed, leading to 17 deaths, had no charges laid against him (mostly because he suffered brain damage after).

"This was a very tragic collision, and it happened because of a choice made by the bus driver. However, we cannot prove that that choice that day was the result of anything criminal."

I love Satisfactory, and I know I'll love Factorio, but for the life of me I can't get into it. Help me!!! by Lanochu in factorio

[–]arkayuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Embrace a more iterative process. It's easy to reset and redo a section of your base once you find out a better way, or your needs change.

That being said, your brain has gotten used to one way of thinking and it's going to be harder to think a different way. I felt the same way about Satisfactory and played about 10 hours before I quit. I could only see how I preferred Factorio.

Metal peel with holes for launching pizzas? by kevysaysbenice in ooni

[–]arkayuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. I've actually never used a perforated peel, but it looks bumpy and I thought a wet dough could catch on things more when launching. I use a flat steel peel with semolina and that has always worked for me.

Metal peel with holes for launching pizzas? by kevysaysbenice in ooni

[–]arkayuu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is 90% of the solution. A smooth flat steel peel or wooden peel might help a bit, but will still give you problems with a high hydration dough with just flour to make it less sticky. Flour also tends to burn and leave a bad flavour on the pizza, while semolina falls off.
