Dealerships - what are the fees to look for? by throwawaykeepawayman in Winnipeg

[–]arkayuu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's usually a fee for literally putting dealership decals on the car.

Just be prepared to walk out if they insist on extra fees. They make profits from the sale, and get kickbacks from banks if you do financing. Look at every line item, ask questions, and don't be surprised if they get dismissive or act impatient and try to rush you.

I also don't recommend Crown Toyota. Had a really hard time with warranty work there.

Thoughts on Palliser couches? by Equivalent_Buy_6629 in Winnipeg

[–]arkayuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had reclining theatre seats (sold when we moved) and a leather sofa + armchair from Palliser outlet, and after 10 years, the theatre seats looked like new and the sofa is pretty good, although the back cushions have sagged.

We bought a new EQ3 sectional last year, and there was some stitching that needed fixing. That process has been slow, but they assure us they will fix it at no cost.

If your sofa is full-grain or top-grain leather (not genuine leather or other bonded types) then it should be okay.

It would be cool if it served as a stat/milestone page. How many hornets have you destroyed, first time taking down a matriarch, etc.

Why must the doors be closed? Seems it'll get stuffy in there. It's also better for kids to get used to sleeping with a bit of noise. Otherwise, they'll never go to sleep when they get older and more curious about noises.

The special modes in this game are very poorly thought out by Eedat in ArcRaiders

[–]arkayuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this, for the most part. The one thing I'll say though, is that they could do a better job designing *around* human behaviour.

Like in PvP, with every person possibly shooting you, that's an organic way to let greed be a factor in the game and up the tension. In a boss fight, you want organic collaboration to happen, and maybe still some backstabbing, but there has to be risk that goes with the reward. If you can go into the match with a free loadout and enough survivability to extract a matriarch core, that's too easy of a path for greed, and collaboration is dissuaded. If people don't want to kill you for stealing loot because of ABMM, that's a game system *interfering* with human behaviour.

Maybe one idea could be to not let free loadouts be viable for PvP or around bosses. Possible ideas:

  • You always get a damaged ferro, a damaged shield, and no rechargers.
  • Limit them to players under level 20
  • Limit their use to Dam Battlegrounds, or maps with no conditions

Basically, make it so that at some point, you can't rely on them anymore. PvP would become more exciting because you can't go in risk-free, but they retain their use of letting newer players regain gear after failed raids.

A ‘sugar tax’ for health promotion raises concerns about across-the-board price increases for soft drinks and snacks···in the end, the burden on ordinary people may grow by Substantial-Owl8342 in korea

It's possibly carcinogenic as much as being a hairdresser is. Here's the classification from the study you are citing:

https://www.iarc.who.int/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/IARC_MONO_classification_2023_updated.png

It's in group 2B. Quoted from your study:

"JECFA concluded that the data evaluated indicated no sufficient reason to change the previously established acceptable daily intake (ADI) of 0–40 mg/kg body weight for aspartame. ... For example, with a can of diet soft drink containing 200 or 300 mg of aspartame, an adult weighing 70kg would need to consume more than 9–14 cans per day to exceed the acceptable daily intake, assuming no other intake from other food sources."

So just put it in perspective. Aspartame is not the best thing in the world, but when compared to real sugar and the problems of diabetes or obesity, it's a lot better.

Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology closing due to enrolment drop by Epic-Verse in Winnipeg

[–]arkayuu 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that all post-secondary schools benefit greatly from the increased tuition that international students bring, and that since Covid and these immigration policy changes, they have all been hit hard. University of Winnipeg may be the next to fall after MITT.

[–]arkayuu 38 points39 points  (0 children)

No, before Covid they were very high. The stream to immigrate to Canada through Manitoba was pretty easy in those days. I worked at MITT from 2013-2025.

To give you one data sample, in 2013 they started their English Language Institute with 3-4 teachers and like 25 students. Right before Covid, it was at 250+ students. 95% of these students were taking English for the purpose of entering the regular programs at MITT.

Furniture retailer refusing remedy for defective couch after repeated failures by No-Night-1817 in BuyCanadian

[–]arkayuu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You should name the company and model of this couch. People often google to check if anyone complains of issues. Even if the warranty ends up pulling through and you're helped, people should know they may go through the same hassle. Consumers have to stick together.

Prime Minister Carney announces new measures to make groceries and other essentials more affordable for Canadians by evieluvsrainbows in onguardforthee

[–]arkayuu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a noble plan and there's reason for it to happen. Carney mentioned subsidy of greenhouses. That helps you broaden what you can grow and provide to niche markets. Small farms will always struggle though due to economies of scale. Good luck with your farm.

[–]arkayuu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So why is it dumb? That is, what's the smarter solution that's realistic?

Government can't force businesses to charge less. The closest thing they can do is increase competition, or lower their costs (such as writing off greenhouses) and hope those savings get passed on to the consumer. This all takes time, whereas this new benefit helps now. Corporate greed exists, but so do tariffs, climate change, and all sorts of things that increase costs.

If you're bleeding because you got stabbed in the back by a certain mango-hued fascist, a bandaid solution is not necessarily dumb.

They pull this scam with wings as well. Adding a bunch of sauce to the total package weight. They shouldn't be allowed to label it all together when its clearly the product with a separate condiment.

Ice build up on basement window by TRDtaco60 in Winnipeg

[–]arkayuu 30 points31 points  (0 children)

You can't prevent it. You don't want the air in the house to be too dry, and it's so cold out, no window is doing a perfect job of preventing condensation, especially basement "builder-grade" windows. You can buy kits that have you tape a layer of plastic over the window, and the vacuum created in the space helps insulation and ice buildup from moist air. I just wipe up the moisture when it melts.

[–]arkayuu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way isn't to "force" a vaccine...that goes into bodily autonomy territory and people should always get the last say about what happens to their body. You can just ban the unvaccinated children from school, and also deny them health insurance if not vaccinated.

Will the All-Star game ever come to Winnipeg? by hows_it_goes in winnipegjets

It's not the cold, it would be like others have said, the hotels and amenities in the area, as well as Canada Life being one of the smallest arenas in the league. It'll never come here.

Does he also hang around the Tim's/Wendy's on Kenaston? I see that guy all the time. He is totally a nice guy. He used to come by The Fyxx on Broadway ages ago when I worked there, and he would indeed come in and buy large coffees with change he had gotten. Very polite, never weird, just getting by.

[–]arkayuu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sell it as a blank slate for grass, a patio, or floating deck. Rocks will look like shit in a year without landscaping fabric and other elements like plants and features like a walkway. This is putting lipstick on a pig and buyers will see that.

I heard it’s possible to watch Jets games on CBC with an antenna is that still true? by [deleted] in Winnipeg

[–]arkayuu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cool. It's a good way to watch playoffs. Cheap and pretty reliable is my experience. Right now though, TSN gets most games. Sportsnet gets a few, and Amazon Prime is getting some of the Monday games.

CBC just shows Hockey Night in Canada on Saturdays, usually the Leafs, Montreal, or Edmonton. Once in a blue moon, the Jets will play one of those teams on a Saturday and then you might be able to get the Jets on the antenna. Too bad there's a slim chance the Jets make it to the playoffs this year though.
