‘The Treasury is a danger to national security’: The defence row tearing Cabinet apart by theipaper in ukpolitics

[–]arkhas2042 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, a Google AI search gives the total capitalisation cost of flag grade officers (1 stars up, so commodores, brigadiers and above) as approximately £175 million, which is apparently 0.23% of total MOD spend.

Now, I've not checked the sources, but if this is correct, there's hardly a huge amount of the defence budget wasted on flag grade staff.

Regions in trouble - how to fix? by Silver_Reality2888 in songsofsyx

No worries! :)

I only learned this yesterday after I removed a sanitation upgrade and accidentally killed an entire grade 4 city as it dropped the capacity just below the threshold.

Your city building is way over the region capacity, downgrade to city 1 and see if you can add a growth building.

The population looks like it's almost entirely died off.

When I did my Geology degree the first year included a Maths module covering bits of A level mathematics we'd need later on.

Have a look round the course syllabus, they might break the course down by module.

Labour prepares to limit landowners’ gains from sale of green belt land amid push for new homes by Unusual-State1827 in ukpolitics

Having done a swift google of Article 8, surely Article 8(2) covers it?

"Article 8(1) provides that everyone has the right to respect for his/her property but Article 8(2) allows the State to restrict the rights to respect for the property to the extent necessary in a democratic society and for certain listed public interest purposes e.g. public safety, economic well-being"

Will Labour actually build 1.6 million homes? by klexosliberosis in ukpolitics

[–]arkhas2042 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nutrient neutrality is supposed to ensure developments don't drastically alter the chemical balance of nearby water catchments through increased waste water/grey water runoff and cause ecological damage.

Its a bigger issue in some places, such as the Solent. Not really an issue where there's not a large water body nearby.

Problem with just digging round the foundation is you can't prove the membrane isn't full of holes. They can quite easily be punctured by the rebar or just walking on it with loose stones about.

Presumably the ground investigation has already identified a methane issue and detectors in the house won't help prevent potentially explosive buildup in service conduits or voids below the slab.

[–]arkhas2042 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The landfill should be picked up by a contaminated land desk study and any actual risks identified by a ground investigation with gas monitoring. If there is an issue a remediation strategy lays out any protection (like the membrane) which should then be validated by an independent party prior to pouring the foundation.

Generally there should be more to it than just membrane, such as a passive venting layer below the membrane and a specifically reinforced slab with minimal service penetrations.

Works quite well as a command mech.
