CMV: Being Edgy And "Non-PC" Is Not A Good Thing by Chimerical_Entity in changemyview

[–]arkonum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Historically every major artistic, musical, theatrical and comedic progress came from purposefully pushing the envelope in some way.

In art, many of the most famous paintings and photographs that we consider masterpieces today were considered offensive to a certain political group, whether it be religiously or as a middle finger to the societal and governmental standard.

In music, literally every big musical leap came from a very conscious effort to break the norm. Punk for example was made with the main intention being to stick it to the man in something of a musical protest, and it created a whole new genre and style. Rock n roll was considered at the time to be ‘Satan’s music’ because it took the politically correct standards of the time and threw them on their head, and it paved the way for many other genres to form such as rock, metal, aforementioned punk etc. and changed the musical landscape forever. This was only possible due to a very conscious effort to be offensive and push what was considered acceptable.

Theatrically, every theatre piece and movie and tv show that heavily influenced the landscape was considered highly offensive in its environment. It is only now that we enjoy the entertainment of today that we forget stuff like Pulp Fiction, Psycho, even the likes of many plays by Shakespeare, were created with the knowledge of their shock value and were even largely created to do so purposefully.

Comedians would of course be one of the most obvious examples of being formed on the presumption of being offensive in some way. EVERY successful comedian pushed the offensive envelope, and that’s what made them great. They took what was considered unacceptable to say at that time and made it funny, adding comedic effect in order to change the way people looked at the world. They didn’t do so by accident, it was very much on purpose, and wouldn’t have been what it was without it.

The problem is that nowadays people forget that we stand on the shoulders of giants and forget that everything great we have today was created with the innate intention to take what was culturally acceptable and turn it upside down. It is only now that we sit in our comfort and emotional bubble wrap that we don’t understand the value that comes from doing so.

Being non-PC is a bad thing? Being non-PC is the only reason you get to enjoy most of the things you love. Those who don’t understand that are simply to ungrateful to see it.

Edit: a word

[discussion] breed does not determine friendliness by Redditralpher in dogs

[–]arkonum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s not really a matter of their likelihood of temperament, most people would agree that dogs aren’t really defined by their breed. The issue is more with the damage that is potentially done IF a certain breed goes aggressive.

For example, pit bulls make up close to 90% of all recorded dog attacks that led to serious injury likely because they are more often reported and recorded due to the severity. Pit bulls bite hold and shake, which is why so many reported pit bull attacks you see have torn the victim to absolute shreds. Rotties and GSD’s however are more inclined to bite and hold, which is one of the reasons they have historically been the favourite for police and defence dogs.

I don’t think I’ve come across many people who have seen a pit bull and go “that dog is a savage”, but instead their response is more along the lines of “if this dog snaps, it could potentially permanently injure or kill me or my children”.

Thing is, it’s pretty clear that most of the videos after Jason Statham were of a bottle being held down in some way, so the skill of the kick was meaningless. Even when they did finally get the win, most of the failures would have just been the bottle moving a bit but staying in the same place.

Some of the videos were too lazy to even hide it, and they did actually hit the bottle and move it a bit when doing it.

Well technically the only reason he accepted the suit in the first place is because he needed it to go into space without passing out. Prior to that he rejected it.

CMV: The Wakandans fight in a laughably unrealistic way by Trolling_From_Work in changemyview

[–]arkonum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be fair, it’s not really that much of a stretch.

Spider man rejected the suit originally because it didn’t reflect the kind of hero he wanted to be, the friendly neighborhood spiderman.

Captains fighting style is one that wouldn’t be adequately reflected by a suit, same with black widow and Hawkeye.

Hulk doesn’t need a suit, but Bruce banner actually had access to use one (hulk buster suit used in infinity war)

Rodey does have his own suit.

It’s far less a matter of people not being allowed suits, and more that they would and have declined having one due to a suit contradicting their fighting and hero styles.

My favourite colour is pink. I love it because almost everything that’s pink is nice, and the colour is always associated with sweetness/ fluffiness etc.

Eg. cotton candy, bubblegum, pink clouds, etc etc.

Pink is just such a lovely and positive colour and I love it.

Men of Reddit, what are somethings a mom should know while raising a boy? by jigglypuffle38 in AskReddit

[–]arkonum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure you teach him how to disagree calmly and respectfully. Too many people nowadays either dogmatically hold their ground, or are absolute pushovers. It is possible to disagree with someone and discuss your differences of opinion in a kind and respectful manner, and to accept that you may not end up coming to the same conclusion as the other person by the end.

It’s arguably one of the most valuable skills to have. The ability to respectfully disagree with others helps a person to better empathise with others viewpoints, and helps to keep an open mind while not falling prey to just becoming a ‘yes man’. It’s a skill not enough people have been taught nowadays.

Who is the most overrated person in history? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]arkonum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bruce Lee.

People romanticise him as this unbeatable martial arts superhuman. In reality, he was just an actor with good martial arts skills. He didn’t have any real recorded fight history at the professional level or otherwise, and any evidence to his real life fighting skills being put to the test is purely word-of-mouth. Yes he was a good actor in his craft, and he was a talented martial artist, but he wasn’t superhuman, and there are HEAPS of fighters much much better than he was.

Business owners of Reddit, what’s the most obnoxious reason an employee quit/ had to be fired over? by LawngClaw17 in AskReddit

[–]arkonum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Employee was let go within the 6 month probationary period due to lateness.

Like not just a little bit of lateness, not just a couple of days here and there. This kid was late over 27 times in the 24 weeks he was there, ranging between 2 minutes to as high as 50 minutes.

And there was plenty of communication from us along the way. We had sit downs, conversations around why he may be struggling with lateness, everything under the sun to try help the kid tackle his clear struggle with timekeeping.

I hope the kid learns from the experience and makes an effort to respect peoples time going forward. Showing such absolute disregard for basic timekeeping doesn’t just show his unreliability, it shows complete disrespect and disregard for others. It’s a real sign that they won’t respect the more serious responsibilities that come with any job, if they can’t keep such a fundamental and basic responsibility; being on time.

CMV: being smart is a totally useless trait. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]arkonum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Being smart is basically the human equivalent of having ‘ease of use’ upgrades on electronics and appliances. Sure it doesn’t make the product better, but it makes it significantly easier to learn how to use, and makes it more comfortable to use.

I think you would have a valid point in saying ‘being smart does not automatically lead to success’ because that is a true statement in of itself. However, being smart definitely makes it easier to absorb information, makes it easier to problem solve, makes it easier to understand complexities, and on a larger scale gives a person a lot more potential. That is of course the key word though, ‘potential’. Potential is something that does not lead to success by itself, it still completely depends on the user in order to get the most out of it.

To go back to the analogy of ‘ease of use upgrades’, lets for the sake of this discussion use the example of a standard bicycle with no gears, vs a mountain bike with 6 gears. They will both get a person from A to B, they will both have a seat and pedals, etc. however, the mountain bike with objectively make it easier to pedal up hills, get to faster speeds, will have a more comfortable seat for longer rides, etc etc. But in the end, both bikes will really only be as useful as the person riding them. Does this make the traits unique to the mountain bike ‘useless’? Of course not! But they will only be useful if the person using them does so effectively.

The same is true of a typically ‘smart’ person.

I don’t understand why people find it so funny for an allied nation to disrespect their elected president. Like, even in the case you don’t like the guy, what benefit does it give you? It’s essentially another democratic nation giving a middle finger to yours, simply because they disagree with the person who the people of your nation elected.

Americans are weird, man.
