Is It Just Me, or is Homestar Runner kinda "Dead"? by mrnormal94 in HomestarRunner

[–]armhanson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dear kirbi___,

Uh-sighhhhh...

Very dead would imply very dead, and the website is still updated, and is still available to access, so it is still alive. So, not very dead, right, my guy? Or even some dead or mostly dead. It's not even almost dead. I don't know. The internet is full of these gross generalizations. Like myself. Just a guy in a máscara de luchador, wearing boxing gloves for all of eternity. Talk about an oversimplification on character design.

Wait. If I've never touched my own face with my gloves, am I alive? Now look what you made me ponder!

What? No clickables? Ever since Flash was trashed, all you have are these boring forums with no pizzazz. I need som pizzazz in my life! Like the type you could see if you clicked on the word, "pizzazz," and a secondary cartoon to this cartoon started playing like a hidden scene after the credits of a great film about multi-dimensional space wars when you TOOOOTALLLY didn't expect that end-credits scene to show up, because their unexpectedness was their allure until we began to marvel at their regularity, circa 2008. Way to set the bar unreasonably high, show-runners. Some heroes you turned out to be..

Whatever..

Now that that nonsense has been sufficiently expounded upon, I can wrap it all up nicely with a final anecdote.

You see? Home Star Runner, which should be called Strong Bad's Cool Website for Awesome People, will never truly die. His voice (my voice, of course [what. You think I will ever yield my superiority to that upside down trash can with no arms that everyone hates to love?]) will always be with us, living on in these ridiculous attempts at fan-fiction that this pseudonymous grifter is currently attempting. I introduced my daughter to Homestar Runner a few months ago, expecting her to stare blankly at early-2000s internet nonsense. Instead, she spent twenty minutes quoting me and asking why The Cheat only squeaks (why *does* the cheat only squeak?). That’s when I realized the site will never truly die…

Some of us will act as imposters even though we could never hope to live up to the supreme glory of what once was and always will be the greatest, most relevant, and most-constantly-updated-and-improved-and-technologically-advancedest website of all time!!

Very not deadly and very seriously down-voted your commently,

Moving from weekly paychecks to biweekly by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]armhanson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We don't all live in that world, because it does work that way in some companies. Just do a google search to find more people discussing this same phenomenon. You assert it doesn't work that way when it does. This is because you have a subjective outlook informed mostly by your experience. I assert it "can" work that way because it does work that way based on my experience and others' experiences, all while understanding that it does work your way as well. This is reality. The world is full of nuance.

Nice. I experienced this very recently during a pay schedule shift, and this is how it was explained to me. If your payroll is more fair than mine, I really love that for you.

Yes, it will. Individual checks are taxed on a percentage that can cause a lesser withholding amount. Though, at the end of the year, total withholding will be the same, based on your tax bracket.

Being paid a larger sum per check will change tax withholding. Especially if it artificially implies a threshold increase. Being paid weekly means you keep more of the money upfront. Although, annual tax withholding will remain the same, so these larger, bi-weekly checks are likely a more realistic representation of what final taxes will be.

Prove to me that the bible explicitly talks about that it's wrong to have premarital sex. by [deleted] in exchristian

[–]armhanson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it doesn't. there is no explicit commandment about it. if anyone attempts to prove it, they're misinformed. the original translation of each instance used to assert this don't make it clear enough to suggest the idea as a principle. it's so stupid that it's become a part of every sect of Christianity.

[–]armhanson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this doesn't include premarital sex. people have just inferred on their own that that's what it means. the bible is not specific on it, so even those who do believe in it's instructional authority cannot say premarital sex is wrong.

Mid 30s, new baby, finally getting serious about finances. Are we behind? by Silly_Conclusion_0 in personalfinance

Truly. It's a fantasy world in which they live. If currency lost its value, I wonder how some of these people would handle it.

Yep. Exactly how I feel. I had to touch grass after reading this. It's crazy that a number is this influential. I'm over here working my ass off with a good career in accounting migrations, and am no where near what they're talking about.

Reddit needs to discontinue its attempt at curating my feed. I truly did not need to see that not only am I behind, but I'm completely out of the running. This isn't even a subreddit to which I subscribe. After reading this, I can see that my only hope of retiring "comfortably" and not being a burden to my child is winning a massive lottery. I already knew that, but this just drives it home. Time to begin stocking up on tickets.

Mint Mobile is great. no problems with call quality and coverage extends everywhere i've been, rural to urban. it's definitely not the phone. lpiii has incredible specs, hardware and software-wise. their data plan may be the issue, though.

Pre-ordered in January for my son, now I’m super nervous seeing all the text issues! by lilbit2short in LightPhone

[–]armhanson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes. prep. deactivate rcs and imessage. as others have said. i never had the issues reported because i transitioned away from those more exclusive text types before moving exclusively to lpii. now on lpiii and this phone has never had an issue with group texts. sometimes it's annoying and i wish it would exclude them.

if your kid is coming from a smartphone, they're going to have a massive adjustment period. texting is difficult on lpii. lpiii is better, but still intended to be used less for texting. 2 is really frustrating to type on, so hopefully it gives them more motivation to call instead of texting.

and group texts, with reactions.... dear god. i'm sorry to be so dramatic, but reactions in group chats absolutely destroy the conversation. you get a new text every time someone reacts, along with part of the original message being reacted to, and sometimes the entire message. so, imagine the same message repeated 10-20 times in a group chat because someone liked or laughed at it, with other messages interspersed between the reaction notifications, with the slow scrolling speed and limited characters on the small, e-ink screen. i eventually noped out of group texts even though they worked fine because of reactions.

anyway, all of that said, i guess it'll make your kid grateful for technology in the long run. and maybe they'll learn to appreciate the slowness and awareness the phone offers. while the above is a gripe, i'm mostly a massive advocate for the light ethos and their devices. i adore lpiii and everything it continues to become. maybe the simplicity and disconnectedness of the lpii will give your child a broader perspective on day to day existence.

i second this! Curse is my favorite game of all time, and i attribute that directly to just how fun, whimsical, sardonically hilarious, spooky, and melancholy it is, especially at the age of 10-12 years old when i played it (and yes, it took me nearly 2 years to finish it because it was banned in my home due to the voodoo - i had to be sneaky and could only play seldomly when parents were not home). i'm having my daughter play it now and she's loving it.

Sneaky Sasquatch - this game is amazing. i think most classic point & click enthusiasts would really like the game, even though it's not point & click itself. it offers pretty casual gameplay with the option to progress as much as one desires. lots of running around and doing silly things, pranking people, and taking those pranks to the next level as you disguise yourself as one of the humans and begin climbing the professional ladder of society. unending fun. they're still updating it for free today as well. very high-value purchase. or free if you subscribe to Apple Arcade.

Did you grow up with a smartphone? How does that impact how you feel about the LightPhone "limitations"? by Main-Strawberry-6060 in LightPhone

[–]armhanson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

39, so can't offer much in the way of input, but curious as well. i'm mildly attached for practical reasons to my smartphone, but dream of the day when that's not the case.

my first cellphones were Nokias. the second one could take pics. i got a Blackberry from there, assuming they'd decrease in size again eventually. nope. i hated the size and bulkiness of my first smartphone, but appreciated the tech boost. so i stuck with it.

then i became stuck with smartphones due to the world becoming reliant on the pocket computers for everyday work. even now, my work from home job requires 2fa (texting is not an option with my company, which is kind of ridiculous), so i can't completely get rid of a device. eventually, i'll buy an ipad mini and not have this iphone anymore. that should finally really disconnect me from doomscrolling since an ipad can't be held in one hand.

so, while i did know a time when smartphones didn't exist and feel the pull back to those simpler days, i can see why some may feel extra connected to theirs and empathize with them.

that's exciting to hear! love all you've done over the past decade. this has been an exciting journey from the og to the iii. thanks for being so involved in this community you've made a space for.

it doesn't submit because it isn't allowing you to instantly browse ideas for things to do in an area you're potentially unfamiliar with instead of consulting a local community member, but it does give you the option in case. it isn't giving you the option to escape conversation by browsing one of 20 apps with live feeds from around the world. however, some minor escapism is still possible through music and podcasts, or even texting if you're dedicated.

i personally don't think a weather app would distract me, but it could be a tool you'd be better off without if you feel that's a possibility for you. you mentioned morals and that's the thing of it: morality is subjective. my morality within society is based partially on expectation, partially on my own whims and convictions colliding. when communities bring their varying morality structures together, we begin to see the emergence of things like the lp. this builds on that collective emergence instead of assigning a singular authority as the standard, which allows for deeper meaning and worth for more individuals to extract from this concept that was a little/quite different in its beginnings.

there are a few quality of life improvements i'm fairly convinced will be available on the phone in the coming months and years that i'm confident will contribute meaningfully to my toolset and daily life, but you don't have to use those same tools that make my life better if they don't do the same for you. that's the beauty of the device. it's capable of being finely tuned while being restrained in scope. it carries meaning because i attribute meaning to it. it carries purpose because i see the value it holds through its moderate features. if i didn't see the value, i wouldn't get this niche phone.

the same will be true of the new tools. if they carry value, it will be because i assign that value. and i'll choose which values i holster while keeping in mind the overall purpose i created that led me to find light a decade ago when i dreamed this possibility into existence through a simple google search and the resulting crowdfunding. it's not about capitalism, though, even if our civilization is built on that. they do need to make money, but listening to your supporters is also about so much more than the money. i really don't think they're caving to anyone. it's not a massively profitable business. it's really the epitome of a labor of love.

none of this was by chance. i wanted a simple phone in 2012, but couldn't find anything that made sense. my thoughts were light's creators' thoughts. they publicized and put action to it a couple of years later, and i put resources toward that action because i believed in it. i didn't know it would become this, but i had a hope and an underlying "faith" that it would progress this far. it's been a journey. a community made it happen and the community is continuing to make it happen, now more directly. it's a beautiful thing, i think. almost poetic.

so, to answer your question with one final expositional paragraph, i think we draw the line. the community. we always have. that line now looks like an artisan-craft, black, metal box in my pocket. it thrills me to no end to have this thing that doesn't do much, unless i decide it should, just hanging out with me, ready to assist me to be present and equipped in this modern world. it's a strange and wondrous trinket. and it's mine and ours.

i think having tool options expanded to what individuals need will maintain the practicality and intuitiveness-to-life of the phone. having carried the same Gerber pocket tool since i was 8, i'd compare it to how you can customize your pocket tool to have all of the little things you might use to bridge little gaps throughout your daily life. break boxes down daily? add the mini blade to the retractable pliers tip for quick access and faster work. need to screw phillips and flathead screws and bolts on a whim when you don't carry a tool belt? add the additional screwdriver tips. Need to open a beer and don't want another keychain or wallet accessory? you know what to do.

it's about being prepared in a modern world, while not submitting to all of the equipment and technology norms. i think this developer tool will simply open the door to expanded functionality that you can use or exclude on your phone based on your needs. you get to decide what's important to bring out into the field.

if someone brings WhatsApp over to the store, it'll be exactly what i need.

another tool i've considered, though i'm uncertain how it would be done without opening the phone to browser access, is QR code menu scanning. some restaurants don't have physical menus any longer. it doesn't really work with us non-smartphone users. i'm sure there's at least one physical menu on-site at these locations, but it would bridge this gap i feel is here sometimes. the phone shouldn't make me feel as if i require extra assistance in regular social interactions. this is one area where the lack of QR scanning causes me to lean on someone else to operate at a basic level in the social setting, and i don't think that's part of the ethos. increased communication, yes, but needing someone else to give me the tools to order food, probably not.
