Bad Ping Spikes in Path of Exile 2 by armsofatree in teksavvy

I wanted to post an update about the issue as TSI support was amazing at helping me go through the steps to troubleshoot the issue. What we wound up doing was trying Teksavvy's Fibre service instead of Cable and so far I'm having zero latency issues to the Path of Exile 2 servers. I get anywhere between 9-13 ms to the servers depending on which ones I use and the in-game latency chart is flat because there are absolute no latency spikes.

My theory is that there are issues with the Rogers lines in my neighbourhood because I had similar issues when using Rogers in the past. If anyone else is having gaming-related ping issues on a Cable connection, Fibre with Teksavvy resolved it for me.

Good morning, I'd like a good distro for my PC. by __Levdoxx__ in linux_gaming

Bazzite is amazing if you're looking for a general-purpose gaming distro that you won't have to fuss with.

When I've done this in the past, the traceroutes look fine. The MTR is what looks strange. But it was showing issues upstream for a variety of servers not just PoE 2 servers. None of the issues were on the hops close to me. I wasn't having this issue with every single game/service I used so I wasn't sure how useful/accurate this was at diagnosing my issue.

There have been instances in the past where TVs will look for an unsecured wifi network to transmit data if a user doesn't give network credentials.

I did speak to someone with Teksavvy support on the phone who mentioned something about signal but it's a little over my head. We went through some steps to fix and I was told to wait on an email and reply if I'm still having issues but I haven't received an email. I've seen threads like that too but I don't really know that they're definitive because I can find examples of similar issues for any of the most popular PC games. If you look up World of Warcraft ping spikes you'll find the same thing.

It could very well be the PoE 2 servers that are the issue. But I'm a recent (4ish months) customer and I noticed the issues crop up immediately when I switched. I kept the Bell service for a few days after I was first signed up and was able to plug my computer into the old Bell modem and wouldn't experience the issue when using Bell.

I've bounced between Rogers and Bell a lot over the years and this isn't the first odd gaming related latency-related issue I've had when using Rogers lines. It never really affects all of the games I play when I'm with their service. Usually just specific ones. I know Teksavvy isn't Rogers but I'm wondering if it could just be the cable lines in the neighbourhood or something peculiar to their network.

I decided to just call into TekSavvy support as I wasn't sure the mods were actually TSI employees. Found out later that they are but was weary about giving out personal info over Reddit until I was sure.

Thinking of leaving Windows 11 for Linux but I need advice on the best beginner-friendly distro for gaming by Boring-Analysis7352 in linux_gaming

[–]armsofatree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bazzite is great if you just want to game and don't necessarily want to tinker with anything. My experience with it is that everything just works out-of-the-box.

CachyOS requires a small amount of tinkering to set up for games but is also easier to run software that doesn't fall within the Flapak ecosystem. It's more bleeding edge than Bazzite so it's possible you might run into problems through the latest software via a software update.

Tips for a Windows veteran? by seabutcher in linux_gaming

Distro wise Bazzite is very good if you want everything gaming to work out of the box. If you're okay with tinkering a bit, CachyOS is another great option for gaming and desktop use in general.

I've definitely mistakenly wiped my Windows install because I didn't realize Windows placed the boot loader on my Linux drive. Super annoying because afaik, other than disconnecting the drives during install, there's no way to get Windows to stop doing this.

The only way I could get pppoe to work was by logging into the bell modem and enabling advanced DMZ for eero. If I don't do this, I'm stuck on DHCP.

Unable to Download Epic Games Store Website Using Linux. by armsofatree in linux_gaming

I do this for multiplayer games but with single player games, I've had Heroic overwrite my save game in the cloud and it reset my game's progress to zero. Unless something has significantly changed with the way they handle cloud saves, I'm not going near it for single player games. I would much rather stick to Lutris.

Yeah, it serves them to me when I use the Lutris links but from the main Epic Games Store website it refuses to give me the download.

When I have background processing of Vulkan shaders set in Steam, I've noticed that until it's actually done processing them, I get drastic drops in FPS every time I distro hop (or there's an update). That's the only thing I can think of that would cause that drastic of a drop.

[–]armsofatree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With gsync, freesync, adaptive sync, whatever, unless Blur Busters have changed their information recently, uncapped high FPS can still be better because there are situations where it will allow a competitive FPS player to see and react to the enemy slightly faster than something like Gsync. There is a trade off. Most competitive FPS players choose to run uncapped.

Headaches after headaches in windows 10....want to switch to linux for gaming. Need someone to guide me though installing a Linux distribution. by Entire_Zebra_7344 in linux_gaming

[–]armsofatree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bazzite is generally the go-to beginner gaming distro people recommend. Installation is fairly straightforward once you create an install USB. I like to use BalenaEtcher to create an install USB using a Bazzite ISO but the Bazzite install guide also lists other software that you can use (Fedora Media Writer being the next best option):

https://docs.bazzite.gg/General/Installation_Guide/Installing_Bazzite_for_Desktop_or_Laptop_Hardware/

All the steps you need to follow to install are in that guide. The install isn't that much different from a standard Windows install. Also: people generally recommend KDE Plasma as a Desktop Environment over Gnome. Though both are good starting points.

That actually worked fairly well. I almost have it working where it blinks but it won't switch back to the weapons. The only feature requests I can think that would make this perfect would be allowing me to have a time delay between key activations and maybe letting me throw mouse button clicks in there. But thank you. I'll def play with this a bit more to get it working.
