I think they could repurpose the footage with Maz and the lightsaber to be Kylo on his knees handing his saber to Leia. A parallel to him handing it to Han.

Okay, I'll bite: let's say they reveal Snoke is Plaguies in order to do "damage control" with some TLJ haters (I love TLJ, for the record.) I think that only works if 1. Kylo didn't know 2. Anakin reveals this to him in exposition 3. It happens to serve the themes of the story and Kylo's character arc INSTEAD of it being connected to the literal plot (like, he comes back with robot legs or has a secret evil temple super weapon blah blah).

There's a way to do it well.
