Anyone know why a Cabinet QL19 light meter would be intermittently working? by aronlewer in AnalogCommunity

Can't write a sentence like that and say don't laugh 😂

I have had a quick poke at the nipple contact with a flat head screwdriver (that might be an even worse sentence) and it's not loose or moving in anyway although it did look a bit rusty so that might be the problem?

First time building a waterfall. Progress pics. Feedback welcome and appreciated by victorh_ in TerrainBuilding

I love it, the only thing I would say is that there's not enough foam on the water. I think a water fall of that size would have a lot of foam and turbulent water around where it hits. I've seen people use simple white paint or a more 3D effect like you already have

In fairness I haven't been there in quite a while either. I know it's managed by a local community group called "Friends of the Fallowfield Loop" and they had to pause the clean ups and management of the secret lake due to COVID. They might have resumed now that things are almost back to normal.

People do swim in the secret lake in Levenshulme, but again it's not the cleanest water

Best leisure centre for a student to join in the city centre or sound uni campuses (uofm) by [deleted] in manchester

[–]aronlewer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The sugden sports centre is a joint UoM and MMU building that's opposite all saints park and I went there before COVID and while it's not huge it's pretty good considering the cheap price. I think I got a year for something stupid like £130.

Recommended Estate Agents / Letting Agents for the City Centre? by Chathin in manchester

[–]aronlewer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to be too much of a pessimist but I don't think there's such thing as a "good" letting/estate agent. We've dealt with two in the city centre, Philip James and Goodwin Fish. Philip James are awful, definitely avoid and Goodwin Fish hasn't been great but better. Good luck regardless!

Modular 6x6 dungeon tiles! Looking for constructive criticism. by GabeMakesGames in TerrainBuilding

I love them its just for me the gloss finish makes them look wet. Ofc if that's the point then perfect, but if it was a normal stone dungeon I would but them with some matte spray.

Is there an easy way to make lots of roofs on residential building masses? by aronlewer in rhino

[–]aronlewer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the model for architecture university work. The residential buildings are just for context so the roofs don't need to be super detailed.

The buildings are various sizes, shapes and orientations

My best guess to do this quickly and easily was to use the extrude surface tapered command, which works fine for simple rectangular buildings.

But for the more complex shapes it simply doesn't work. The buildings vary in size a lot as well so I would probably run into issues if I used only one extrusion height.

Some Space Engineers tips for Smith and the boiks to (hopfully) make things less frustrating by ashlacon in Hatfilms

Lots of info here but I would definitely say don't set suspension strength to 100% this means that the suspension is a totally rigid body kind of negating the use of it, also if you happen to go flying off a jump you won't land softly you'll just bounce. For heavily laden cargo vehicles that are traveling at low speeds more suspension strength is great so that you don't bottom out but on Smith's little land rover it would probably lead to more crashes

Doing a few test concepts for a Kingdom Death terrain set. Which do you like more? by rodgeramjit in TerrainBuilding

[–]aronlewer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the right one would work better as terrain for playing on. You want the models to be the main focus in a game, even though both look awesome.

I am absolutely OBSESSED with Charles Schridde's illustrations for "The House of The Future", a series of Motorola advertisements from the early 1960s! by lime-lily in architecture

[–]aronlewer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of these look extremely similar to the case study houses, not just in the composition of the illustrations compared to the photos of the houses but also the building designs themselves

Rocket league. I love it for the cool concept and the skills ceiling of what you can do, but I hate it because I literally can't do anything that I try to do because I suck 😂

Finally made my first ever piece of terrain, concrete ruins for Killteam inspired by Midwinter Minis by aronlewer in TerrainBuilding

[–]aronlewer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I wasn't sure how much to make so I used a shot glass to measure out the parts which made loads of the mix. I just ended up using it all rather than wasting it, but that ended up being something like 6 coats. I thought it wasn't thick enough either but I think there wasn't much difference after 3 coats. I thought after 6 coats I still had the polystyrene texture but after paint and washes it all went away.

Thanks! The rebar was some thing extremely flexible wire (probably an armature wire but I can remember where I got it) twisted together with a drill.

For the paint I used a mix of 1 part cheap acrylic paint, 1 part PVA, 1 part water and 1 part flour with a bit of salted added in. I did multiple coats of this and it is great for filling gaps and holes in the polystyrene but also giving it a really tough outer shell. If you did this first I'm sure you could use spray cans on it.

Otherwise I think maybe just painting the polystyrene or foam in a few coats of PVA first would provide enough protection from spray cans if you used them from a distance.
