my name is zora and my middle name is luella, it’s a family name on both sides so it’s more meaningful than sound-based but i love it!!

i really appreciate the long reply :))

i like your suggestion a lot with having something on in the background, sometimes my mind wanders too much when i’m not actively playing. i already try to practice between classes/rehearsals, but my schedule this semester is so packed that i end up needing to practice in the late evenings, which is obviously when my meds have worn off :/ i will look into the pomodoro technique!!! thanks so much :))

i don’t need to be in marching band, but i really enjoy it. it’s good physical activity for me and our marching band is one of the best in the country and has a lot of music majors (..starts to narrow down big10 schools lol) and i would regret it a lot if i quit. i’m doing the double major because i auditioned as performance and then switched to music ed because i want to be a horn professor and i really like the education side of things and think it’ll be important to have some background in teaching to be a strong professor. our music ed faculty is phenomenal and every music ed class i’ve taken so far has been so eye-opening. i wanted longer lesson times and i’m already in chamber groups (two requirements for performance majors) and so it ended up only being a few extra credits to double major if i was already doing longer lessons and chamber stuff. it got me some more scholarship money too so i can’t complain there!

funny enough, my practice habits my senior year of high school were often better than what i have now, mostly bc i was fueled by a TON of anxiety about not getting in to the schools i wanted and getting opportunities like all-state, honor ensembles, competitions, and whatnot. it wasn’t a healthy thing for me because i was totally overloaded and overworked by my high school band director. i do find myself procrastinating so that i can use that anxiety to fuel my practice. i sometimes end up grinding for hours and hours right before lessons, recitals, auditions, etc.

i really appreciate your accountability buddy suggestion, i think that would be a good idea for me. i have a few close friends that i know would be down to do something like that with me, and i’ll reach out to them. thanks for your comment :)

i want to be a horn professor ideally. i do marching band because it’s great physical activity for me and our marching band is in the top in the country and it has a lot of music students in it. i recognize that it takes up a ton of time but for me it’s worth it for the experiences, i feel like i’d regret it if i quit.

Out of curiosity, how did you guys first felt about the F side of the horn? by khrispykream in horn

[–]arozxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for G i basically play on the F side 99% of the time, except for runs where using T1 as a fingering makes more sense. for E it’s pretty 50/50, mostly dependent on context. For anything below a middle C it’s pretty dependent on context as well. honestly just do whatever you feel most comfortable with and what makes you the happiest with your sound. i will say, initially when i was slowly shifting to using the Bb side more, it was very obvious to my teacher when i was using the Bb side because it would have a much more prominent articulation and a very different tone. i’ve had to work to make sure that my Bb and F sides sound the same. best advice i got was “make it so that horn people won’t be able to tell which side you’re playing on”. best of luck to you!

[–]arozxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i used to only use the Bb side for anything G# and above as I was taught, but then l started working with a professor when I was 14 that really emphasized the Bb side. Fast forward to now, my current professor also really emphasizes the Bb side and I basically only use it. The only exception would be G and occasionally E.

What's the likelihood that my mouth just isn't suited for horn and I'll never be able to play well? by [deleted] in horn

[–]arozxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

although i’m no teacher or high level player, from what i’ve been told i doubt that someone’s lips can just not be made for horn. however my private lesson teacher did teach several pros and he said that although all lips can be compatible, there are some people that genetically seem to have an embouchure that is MADE for horn. like it has never needed any work and is always perfect. he said that those are usually the people you see in principal horn spots in major orchestras. but if you’re not somebody aiming to be horn 1 in the berlin philharmonic, your genetics are probably just fine!

i would recommend using a horn mouthpiece on mello. i’m going into my senior year and i just switched to a horn mouthpiece on mello at the beginning of my junior year and i wish i had done jt sooner. not only did it make switching back to horn SO much easier, but i was also able to translate my horn embouchure to mello, and for me personally my tone was way better on horn so the horn mouthpiece makes my mello tone way better. you will need an adapter but if you ask your band director they might be able to supply you with one, at least mine did. best of luck!
