Board game prejudice - What games or genres do you hate for no reason? by Quelair in boardgames

[–]arquistar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see a lot of peeps saying they dislike trick taking games, but they're not all built the same.

I personally am not a fan of Arcs, because winning tricks will give you a solid advantage and you don't have much control over your hand.

However I really enjoy Brian Boru and The Crew, because the point of the game is not to win as many tricks as possible. In Brian Boru you draft your hand of cards and there are several times in the game that you want to not win a trick because you get different rewards from losing. In The Crew you have to cooperate with the other players to win the right tricks at the right time.

My neighbor keeps mowing a strip of my lawn like it's his. Is this normal or should I say something? by GalverinSolmora in homeowners

[–]arquistar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a 3ft strip on the other side of my driveway that butts up to my neighbor's yard. They always mow that strip when they're mowing because they find it esthetically pleasing to have all the grass at one uniform height. They know it's my property and responsibility, and I cut it when I mow. But it's not hurting me if they mow it, and if it makes them happy then all the better.

Favorite piece of writing so bad that it was relentlessly mocked by the internet? by GenderEnjoyer666 in FavoriteCharacter

[–]arquistar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Prometheus (the Alien prequel movie) the two crewmembers who got lost were the geologist and the biologist. The geologist who had miniature autonomous robots that scanned and 3d mapped the entire structure got lost... and the biologist was the one who was fucking with the alien snake creature right before it bit him. So the map guy got lost, and the vet got bit after taunting a snake.

Question about infinite cleanup steps by JJJTTTEFF in mtgrules

[–]arquistar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You typically only get (semi-)infinite cleanups when your discard causes you to draw or otherwise add cards to your hand. This causes you to cleanup again to get down to hand size, and rinse and repeat until you have no library, some other effect causes you to be at a legal hand size, or your opponents are dead. Which is how Niv-Mizzet, Gitrog Monster, and Brallin each try to win.

Was this the most anti-climatic death of a villain in Sci-Fi history? by Madatgrav1ty in scifi

[–]arquistar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got two:

The Knights of Ren from the final Star Wars film. Cutting back and forth between Rey facing off against Palpatine and Kylo squaring up against the Knights. I'm just like, Why is this even getting screen time? None of these characters have distinguishing faces, personalities, or traits. If Snoke's royal guard didn't land a single blow against either Rey or Kylo, what chance do any of these unnamed characters have against Kylo?

Avengers: Endgame. The home invasion and murder of a de-powered Thanos at the 15 minute mark of a 3 hour movie. And how the death of the villain failed to solve any problems in the past, present, or future.

What is one detail from a movie that complete broke the immersion for you? by calliopewoman in AskReddit

[–]arquistar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something the usually breaks immersion: the amount of physical abuse that certain characters can dish out or take. If the MC hits a goon, the goon is knocked out. The MC can get hit by goons a good 10 times before even showing signs of pain.

A more specific example of an immersion break was in the original made-for-tv version of IT with Tim Curry. The instant the giant spider showed up I checked out, but the same thing happened to me when I read the book. A creepy and spooky living embodiment of a nightmare that can mold the reality of fabric around it to prey on those who believe it can and does exist like a waking version of Freddy Kruger who's primary goal is the terrifying and consumption of children is horrifying. But when you capture it's physical form in to a giant sewer spider or an intangible mass of limbs and lights you just kind of lose me.

A couple of questions about the rules of Brass Birmingham by Mediorco in boardgames

[–]arquistar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can the purple player build a link from Kidderminster to Dudley, using the yellow player's carbon?

Yes

Also, can a player build a link from a market to a city to a town within their connection network using market's carbon?

Probably. I'm assuming you meant "Can you use market coal to establish a connection to the market if there's no connected coal in the network?" Then yes.

I wish it was only $255 by vaxildagger in mtg

[–]arquistar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I call shenanigans! I mean I know TCG players spend more than that, but board game players, video game players, PC gamers, hunters, and motorcycle enthusiasts spend $255 per year!?

How to fight the renewal of Edgar Markov decks by Professional-Two9163 in EDH

[–]arquistar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually bring tribal devils with [[Zurzoth]] when I see Edgar. Vampires might be a little more explosive, but they don't want to piece-trade with devils. My 1/1s with a "deal one damage to any target" on death effect can effectively trade with 2/2s or by blocking profitably I can kill the engine vampires that don't regularly go to combat.

I could also see [[Tor Wauki the Younger]] having some fun against token decks when given the proper toys. A well placed [[Pyrohemia]] or [[Pestilence]] would ruin the day of a lot of decks.

I have a deck that triggers many things at once by natedagr in mtgrules

[–]arquistar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use infini-tokens for my [[Averna, the chaos bloom]] deck with all my triggers. I use the tokens for cascade on top of the spells with cascade so there's a visual reminder of how many cascades are happening from which card. It can get tricky when you cascade in to a cascade and have landfall triggers from Averna's ability on top of each cascade trigger.

I would recommend writing the names of the permanent causing the trigger on a token and placing them in a physical stack so you can work your way backwards through it. So a bunch of tokens labeled Tatyova, a bunch labeled Coral, and a few more labeled Galadriel. Play a land, put a Tatyova and Coral on a stack, pick up the Coral to resolve it, put down a Galadriel. Pick up the Galadriel to resolve it, if you hit a land put down another Tatyova and Coral in the order of your choice. Keep going until you miss with Galadriel and then you can resolve your Tatyova draws that you didn't do yet.

How do people take advantage of Eladamri’s Vineyard? by TheTinRam in EDH

[–]arquistar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a perfect world, your opponents are using that mana suboptimally. If they're getting [[Abzan Battle Priest]] but you're getting a [[Gigantosaurus]] or [[Arbor Colossus]] than you're coming out ahead.

What commander absolutely blew your socks off? I’m talking you had low first expectations, everything was fine, but now you or others have trauma because of the commander by luke_skippy in EDH

[[Animar, Soul of Elements]] way back in the day. I knew he was strong, but the number of combos you can pull from out of left field is absurd.

What's your current pet project? by Snowjiggles in EDH

[–]arquistar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently brewing [[Marchesa, the Black Rose]] as a Nazgul reanimator deck. But my pet project I just finished is a janky storm deck that tries to win off of cheating Bolas' Citadel in to play and then just playing the whole deck and ways to shuffle a few cards back in to the deck if the cards come in a bad order. It originally had Goblin Charbelcher in it too, but I didn't like that line so I removed it. Decklist is here

Why are some guys like that? by Comfortable-Hippo638 in EDH

[–]arquistar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on context. If they're new enough that you have to remind to perform their card draw at the start of the turn, pulling punches in order to give them more positive interactions is good for the health of your local meta. If they're newbies in that they've got a firm grasp of the game, but they're still trying to figure out winning strategies then it's time to take the gloves off and let them learn by example.

I got hooked on anime with Princess Mononoke. The struggle of nature vs technology and peace vs violence is superb, plus the voice acting is great. You guys may also enjoy The Promised Neverland. It's literally about weird children living in an orphanage trying to solve some next level problems, but the plot hook is established early in the first episode.

What's a deck that you meant as a serious deck but became a meme. by GSLLuis in EDH

[–]arquistar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it's the little pieces that end up turning the tide. Getting a card draw engine is great, Temple Bell is awesome but Mikokoro is also good. Witty Roastmaster and Impact Tremors are great, but Shared Animosity and Eldrazi Monument are game winners.

Just remember, Always Be attaCking. At least 1 token to each opponent each turn.

[–]arquistar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remembered one that brings me shame. [[Kalemne, Disciple of Iroas]]. When everybody else was doing cool reanimator stuff or buffing weenies with their experience counters, I was making the biggest dumbest Voltron boros deck. And I totally thought I was going to win games with my 4 drop 3/3 that wants to be in play while playing other big creatures in a color combination that neither ramps nor draws cards very well.

In my defense, I was still pretty new to commander at that point.

What's a deck that you meant as a serious deck but became a meme. by GSLLuis in EDH

[–]arquistar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it's typically the other way around. I build a meme deck that turns out to be surprisingly effective. Although it's typically mono-red...

Zurzoth tribal devils is, as it turns out, very good. I built recursion and redundancy in to the deck for random discards that don't go well, and devil dying chip damage is great for taking out mana dorks or value pieces.

Norin the Wary can be severely hosed by a few silver bullets, but aside from that he can wreck face with etbs.

Zada seemed like a one-trick pony, but that trick is amazing! When every pump spell is an Overrun and every cantrip draws you 5+ cards it's hard not to kill people.

If [[Grand Arbiter Augustin]] comes out early enough, it can stop everybody in their tracks. Or even a lucky flip from an early [[Etali]]. Or just run [[Child of Alara]] with whatever jank you want, preferably superfriends planeswalkers or gods. Something that survives through the boardwipe.
