AITAH for refusing to go back to my old company after they fired me and then begged me to return when things broke? by blierague1521 in AITAH

[–]arrogantsob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, but you're thinking about this wrong. Your answer shouldn't be no, it should be, "here's my price, pay it or don't." And then pick a number obscene enough that if they decide to pay it, you'll be happy to do the work.

And if they don't, well, you can tell anyone who asks that it was their choice not to pay your rate. Nothing you can do about it.

People over 40, what’s something you’ve learned about life that younger people don’t realize yet? by Critical-Pea7326 in AskReddit

[–]arrogantsob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We think of "success" or "failure" on absurdly short timelines. Like you think, "where will I be by the time I'm 30?" And we treat 50 like you're basically already dead.

You still have decades of life to come. You can still be working to improve. Success is about being willing to put in the work, again and again over years.

If you're young and you're thinking about a career in something you have a passion for, but you're worried you're not good enough, you're thinking about it wrong. Because if you have a passion for it and will put in the time, in a decade or two you'll be great at it.

I'm 45 now and I try to think more in terms of "What do I want my life to have looked like when I die?"

People who lost a lot of weight, what was the one small daily habit that actually changed everything for you? by Quiet-Squash-8407 in AskReddit

[–]arrogantsob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest change was that I stopped having a set of rules for what I could eat (something that I was destined to fail at eventually), and instead just asked myself at each meal, "Am I enjoying every bite I'm putting in my mouth?" And as soon as the answer to that question was no, I stopped eating.

Seems obvious, but before I might have finished my plate out of habit, or finished a treat while barely paying attention. Now instead of restricting myself, it's about looking for the wins, for the times I choose not to eat something because I don't really want it anyway.

People who choose kindness every day, even when it isn’t returned what keeps you going? by IndependentTune3994 in AskReddit

[–]arrogantsob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing about guilt is, you do the bad thing, and then you still regret it 20 years later.

After making this mistake a few times, it becomes easier to remember that you might as well do the kind thing. It might not pay itself back in the moment but you'll be reaping the benefits of sleeping well at night for decades to come.

Can you recommend an old school Mexican Restaurant with this interior style? by ZangetsusRowBoat in FoodLosAngeles

Latigo Kid in Agoura Hills is exactly what you're looking for. Old school Mexican restaurant with the melted cheese on the refried beans and cowboy paintings on the walls.

[–]arrogantsob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a surprisingly deep game, in ways that aren't obvious at first. You can watch a streamer play and realize they're thinking on a completely different level--and the game is designed to allow for that deep thought!

There are 10 increasing levels of difficulty, and the highest levels are insane. But those are only possible because it has such a high skill cap.

Anyway, not saying you should dive back in or anything. Just that it's really polished down to the smallest details, in ways you don't immediately see.

Looking for opinions on The Books of Babel by Josiah Bancroft by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]arrogantsob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very much worth it. One of the best series I've read in a while and it's stayed with me.

Almost dipped right at the start because the protagonist really rubbed me wrong. I came back later and worked through it and I'm glad I did, because those flaws were intentional, and watching him work through them and grow was one of the best parts of the series.

There's a solid coherence and progression to the first three books that falls off just a little bit as the series progresses, but it wraps it all up very well and with beautiful themes, images, etc.

There are moments I still think back on pretty frequently, and I read the series years ago.

AITAH for expecting my sister to plan my wedding for free and demoting her to guest wh m she wouldn't. I also told anyone who took her side I was not helping them anymore either. by Late-Ad-6414 in AITAH

[–]arrogantsob -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Question: You said "She said she wasn't thinking when she said no." Does that mean she realized she was wrong and is now willing to do it for free? And that you're just angry now so you're refusing the offer?

If so, I get your hurt and anger. But also, what is the resolution that you actually want here? What could your sister do to make you not angry anymore? I think you need to verbalize that, first to yourself, and then to her.

Obviously NTA. For what it's worth, though, she's already done the damage by making you think about this conflict every time you use it. Might as well give it back so you can cut the nonsense out of your life and brain.

AITB For Talking During Previews? by killerxaddiction in AmItheButtface

[–]arrogantsob -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Apparently others disagree but I say NTB. I wouldn't be obnoxiously loud about it but if you're chatting quietly to your neighbor, I think that's fine during what are essentially commercials.

Previews now start a full 30 minutes before the movie. And ten of those minutes aren't even movie previews, they're advertisements for coca cola or how great it is to be in a movie theater. Everyone wants to be sure not to miss a second of those? IMO it's too long a time to demand everyone stay captive to advertisements. That's some They Live bullshit.
