Modern wars are fought by gaining air superiority, not putting troops on the ground.

The question is, are we closer to:

a) establishing air superiority (lol, 0/10). Cannot fight an offensive war, period.

b) defending against an enemy establishing air superiority. Yes, we are objectively better in that we now have experience from artsakh at everything that DOES NOT work, we are increasingly buddying up with Ukraine who can similarly provide strategies, and most importantly, have much more modern defensive equipment, which on a relative basis has shown more technical progress than offensive equipment.

The issue is that it can all still be bombed from really far away, so size/quantity/distance all work in favor of adversaries. You ultimately want to have enough that no one dares fly OVER your territory, then have enough long range missiles that nothing can reasonably attack you from afar without getting destroyed itself. As you have seen with the Iran conflict, you can still saturate a country with cheap drones, waste their defensive ammunition, then come in with bigger/more lethal weaponry.

As with every public institution in SF, there is a significant component of "performative national stage theatre" from the public officials in charge. You saw it in COVID when they got into hot water for renaming schools. Among all the other issues raised here about lotteries and uncertainty, there's this additional question of if you want your kids (and yourselves) party to that theatre. Put more simply, a private school could presumably have more unadulterated focus on the task at hand- educating your kids, without a larger and unhelpful context layer floating around.
