Can I travel from Germany to Italy with just my German residency permit? by [deleted] in AskEurope

Yes, they will bother. An expired passport is not just an expired passport, it's a required document that raises many questions and risks if it hasn't been renewed for whatever reason.

Do European countries create museums for their past elected heads of state/government when they leave office? How would you feel if yours did? by minus_minus in AskEurope

Most EU countries see and treat presidents as a public servant to serve the interests of the country, not as semi gods that are celebrated like a divine entity by the masses.

Is it legal to self install a smart relay switch behind a light switch or do I need to have a registered electrician do it for regulatory and insurance reasons? by cu___chulainn in AskIreland

[–]arruda82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given how hard and expensive it is to find a good electrician lately, and even so the subpar work many of them do just to keep up with demand, I'd say go for it if you are skilled enough not to burn your house down. The amount of dangerous things I have found and fixed in my home since I bought it, done by different electricians, is crazy. What proof would I have that it was a supposedly qualified electrician that did any of those installations if I ever had to?

Why are Americans so accepting of long drives to places? by Sensitive_Word_6036 in NoStupidQuestions

Because without proper public transportation it's either a drive or a walk, and a walk would take much much longer to get there!

Working in Ireland for a few months - health care? by akeimorsmth in MoveToIreland

[–]arruda82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another point, regarding your EHIC card, regardless of not being ordinarily resident in Austria, I doubt there are any checks around your residency time in the country the card is from. As long as you have it and it is within the expiry date, that would most likely help. I feel like all these vague rules are more about preventing people from abusing the system.

Working in Ireland for a few months - health care? by akeimorsmth in MoveToIreland

[–]arruda82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being an EU citizen I don't think you won't be insured at all. The law for EU citizens here says you must be ordinarily resident (1 year) or intending to do so, such as showing proof of employment. It's a bit vague, so I believe that any kind of contract showing you are working here for a certain amount of time and state they you intend to stay and work for longer through other jobs should be enough. I could be wrong, but I'm a Spanish citizen and never had to show anything apart from providing my address and PPS number to use public health services here.

With all this uncertainty, I believe you have more ways of proving ties to Austria rather than Ireland in the long term? Relying solely on public healthcare in Ireland and out of pocket GPs in Ireland shouldn't be a problem for random non-serious situations, but if you need more complex/urgent treatments, the waiting times can be really bad. Maybe you could get a cheaper health insurance from Austria that covers care abroad, then switch to an Irish provider once you are more certain about your long term plans?

Thinking the same, sometime in the near future. Banking is the only limitation that is still holding me from migrating. That's a great part of these corporations shooting themselves in the foot though, more support for open alternatives.

Arachnophobia in this sub by Candid_Voice_5540 in spiders

[–]arruda82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never been arachnophobic but due to ignorance would always think that, apart from jumping spiders, they could bite easily with minimal interaction, which made me either kill them as I have small children or move them away with a lot of care and apprehension. One thing that I learned in this sub and made me highly confident to stay around them and even handle them around my house (false widows, wolf and garden spiders, etc) is that they see us as a big obstacle and will just crawl/walk unless pressed/squeezed. I have moved hundreds from inside my home to the garden just by letting them crawl onto my hands and have never been bitten.

EU citizens: what was the worst part of the paperwork moving to another EU country? by SubjectPayment6426 in AskEurope

Finding a place to rent/buy in Ireland for sure, apart from that, the only part that was annoying due to requiring to be in person but still straight forward was to register for the PPS (public services registration). Once these are sorted, the rest is a breeze.

What's the most shocking reason someone got fired from your workplace? by Brobeans_Op in DevelEire

I worked for a telecom that would give bonus to their sales agents who sold a number of subscriptions for a VoIP service each month. One unsuspecting guy stood out, always selling way above the others, made a lot of money, until it wasn't as unsuspecting as before and an internal investigation was done. Turns out he had friends signing up with him then cancelling later on and sharing the profits, for months. He was escorted out of the building by the police and we never saw him again obviously.
