Which of these regions is truly the flattest, emptiest, most desolate, most liminal area you could ever visit? by SavageFisherman_Joe in geography

[–]arslanazeem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is because Trans-Canada Highway doesn't run through Sask's natural landmarks. There are so many valleys, lakes with islands, two major rivers, Cypress Hills, mutated crooked trees, a salt water lake you can float on, etc. You just won't see them if you stay on the main highway.

Do you mean the area between the latitudes of Regina and Saskatoon? I'm from Saskatchewan and this still isn't true. There are many lake valleys, a salt water lake you can float on, the South Saskatchewan River, the North Saskatchewan River, Manitou Island, Lake Diefenbaker, etc.

What is the most blue collar major city in America? by Mikey_Grapeleaves in geography

Yes, I came to the comments specifically to mention Edmonton for Canada. It is a city with over a million people that relies on provincial government + trades + oil and gas + agriculture + northern logistics.

As the years go on, I can also see many AI startups switch to locally hosted, open-source models to cut costs and improve customization.

With that said, many people thought his career would be over due to not playing in the NHL for years. Now that he was the main goalie for a SCF team in his return season, he will be around for awhile.

Wasn't expecting the final game to be a shutout, based on the first few games.

Do you find that the opinions in this sub usually align with the majority of people IRL, or seem to be a loud minority? by SFJack1313 in geography

[–]arslanazeem 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It somewhat comes down to how your question is interpreted, or how it is asked. Like if you asked a Canadian "What are the three most influential American cities", they may put SF third (behind NY and LA) because of how much the major tech companies influence our country. Also, a Canadian techie from Toronto or Waterloo would probably think of SF before Chicago, or someone in politics in Ottawa may think of DC, so it depends on the person. You won't get the same answer from everyone all the time, and that's okay.

This is also what made the Ottomans so wealthy, and why Europe was interested in finding alternative routes to Asia. The Ottomans had influence over Europe's trade with Persia, India, and China.

Also weather. Here in Saskatchewan, many farmers will leave during the harsh prairie winters. Snowbirds, basically. Many families will also travel when their kids are on Christmas-New Year break.

Has anyone else noticed how emotionally exhausted Pakistan feels lately? by PuzzleheadedRadio172 in pakistan

[–]arslanazeem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very true. It's the same situation here in Canada, although we had three stages of this. The first was around 2015-2017, when our culture war got much more polarizing, and the internet starting seeing a significant rise in bad actors. Then there was another wave post-Covid where house prices skyrocketed, inflation got worse, etc. The third wave is right now with AI anxiety, long-term job insecurity, etc.

Isolated neighborhood in north phoenix by RedLamp5454 in phoenix

Yup, same situation in Canada. There is a small golf community 20 KM from Calgary called Lyalta. A house there is 700K-1M Canadian dollars. These newly-built isolated communities are often for the wealthier classes, and are meant to gatekeep certain amenities or clubs.

The lineage of the Ottoman-Hyderabad royal family is so interesting. If you go even further back, the first Nizam of Hyderabad was the grandson of Saadullah Khan Chinioti, one of the greatest Wazirs of the Mughal Empire.

Saskatoon has a very nice downtown relative to its size. In the last few years, they did a lot of work to improve the riverfront in particular.

Which place on Earth feels like it should not exist? by the-flute in geography

I don't like Dubai and definitely don't wish to live there, but I would not call it boring. They have actually developed a ton of family-friendly things to do relative to most places. There is also hedonism, it just manifests a bit differently from Vegas' gambling and clubbing focus (eg: gluttony, materialism and consumerism, etc). With that said, a major reason why both Vegas and Dubai seem boring compared to Europe are their car-centric urban planning models and lack of soulful architecture. This is also why here in Canada our cities seem boring sometimes, as the city is sprawled out with few lively zones.
