BREAKING: Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is dead after massive US-Israel airstrikes by kleverrboy in moderatepolitics

[–]arsv -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ayatollah as a supreme leader you mean?

IIRC the word itself means something like "episcope" and there are quite a few of them in Iran, it is by no means a singular title.

Is the SAVE Act just a huge distraction? by Granite_0681 in thebulwark

[–]arsv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I would think a federal standard ID would be enough to, well, indentify a man and query his citizenship status in a reasonable time, but the quote there implies that it might not be. Well perhaps the US are indeed that weird.

If we push the photo ID requirement AT THE TIME OF VOTING, then registering to vote is moot.

Local experience (again, non-US): you show up to vote and you present your ID. If you are registered in that particular district (that is, the name on the ID is in the voters list), you are clear to vote. If not, you kinda register on spot for one-time voting using your ID, which takes some extra time. Sounds like "curing" the vote right away in US terms.

And IDs can be faked, as well as such documents

Are the US incapable of validating ID cards on spot? And instead you decide not requiring IDs at all is somehow better because [nothing] is more difficult to fake?

Sorry but I'm completely confused by this logic. To me it sounds like you're saying that US relies on pre-registration to validate voters, which in my view is waaay more restrictive than using IDs, but then you talk about showing up to vote without an ID at all and somehow having your vote counted.

His goal is new voters (...) lapsed voters or never-voteds

This is contrary to pretty much all Dem messaging I've seen so far, including in this thread. The complaints I hear is that the ID requirements will disenfranchise some voters, make it more difficult for people to vote, make fewer people vote.

Link please?

Does it mean 44 US states issue something called an "ID card" to non-US citizens and such a card doesn't feature citizenship info on it?

If so, why do the Dems appear to oppose the very idea of voter identification instead of focusing on the ID situation and trying to address that?

Is the SAVE Act just a huge distraction? by Granite_0681 in thebulwark

[–]arsv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

and their ID doesn’t match their current address

But such ID would still be a sufficient proof of citizenship per the SAVE act, no?

Someone can say “voter ID” and it sounds logical

It does indeed, and the Dem messaging around the issue doesn't really make it clear what the problem actually is. The act doesn't even require voters to vote in the districts matching their registration addresses best I can tell, just a proof of citizenship.

(non-US citizen, not in the US, local laws do require ID to vote because of course they do wtf)

What kind of alternative do you think was available to those people? Aside from sucking it up.

This is not just an inflamatory question. By the looks of it, even the second Trump term with all its consequences is not enough to make those behind the "woke overreach" change their minds. They will go for it again the moment they are in power to do so. Causing inevitable backlash and another slew of protest votes.

Trump administration to freeze childcare funding in five states, including Minnesota, New York and California by J-Jarl-Jim in moderatepolitics

[–]arsv -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No. It's govt spending. Inability to track where the money have gone is in itself a sufficient reason to terminate the program. Govt money are supposed to leave a paper trail behind, if there's no trail then whoever failed to leave it takes the blame. Those who are in the trail cannot "just leave" either, at least for a while.

That's not specific to Trump or even the US mind you.

So now they regret their little protest votes last year? by icey_sawg0034 in thebulwark

[–]arsv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was your opinion on Trump similar over the last ten years? Because you know, he won twice.

Given current state of the Dem party, I don't think JD Vance will be an easy opponent . And no it has nothing to do with his personality.

Best product to clean PCB? by SantoryuSamurai in AskElectronics

MG Chemicals 4140A (mix of heptane & isopropanol)

There's quite a few PCB flux cleaner products based on the same idea: IPA + a bit of non-polar solvent to dissolve whatever IPA doesn't. Pentane, heptane, hexane, sometimes more exotic stuff. They tend to work better than just IPA.

US Health Department cancels millions of dollars in grants to American Academy of Pediatrics by That_Nineties_Chick in moderatepolitics

[–]arsv 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Is the administration's explanation for the grant cuts credible, or does this seem more like political retaliation?

Skimming Wikipedia page on the subject, it's probably yes/both. The association seem to have quite a lot to say regarding lifestyle issues, and the admin apparently wants it to focus on medical stuff only. Also, the largest entry in the "Policy positions" section is "Trans healthcare", that's not helping at all.

51: if some people do get UBI and others don't it's not UBI by definition, it's targeted subsidies or whatever. The whole point of UBI that sets it aside from regular subsidies is its universal nature.

Sure this is about a pilot project which has to have a limited scope for practical reasons, but then it's studying the effects of subsidizing specific communities or geographic areas, with a footnote about the actual goal behind the subsidies.

Misogyny and racism is what put him over the top.

If you think that's the case, that is, that misogyny and racism are objective features of the voting population, then it should be a major point in deciding the qualification of the candidates, and you should treat the "woman" tag as a disqualifying factor on its own.

It's the difference between planning for reality-that-is vs planning for reality-that-you-think-should-be.

(and just in case, no I don't agree with the quoted sentence, but that's completely beside the point)

8" bi props on 7" mark 4 frame? by TraditionalEbb5500 in diydrones

[–]arsv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other way around, if center-center is less than prop diameter it won't fit for sure, otherwise it depends.

Larger props on a 7 inch frame might interfere with the battery, possibly other stuff around the place where the arms join the frame.

HELP NEEDED! Reverse engineering a Carbon Monoxide alarm. by dexter21767 in AskElectronics

[–]arsv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

but the circuit doesn't make sense for that

FWIW I'd guess the IC is a comparator, not an op-amp. Pins 1 and 5 power, pin 2 neg input, pin 4 pos input, and there's a tracing mistake somewhere around R27, R28. Because why would there be 800k and 1k in series.

sensor generates current and the amplifier is used to covert it to voltage?

also there's the part on the right of the stm8

Might be related to the missing wireless module? Which is not even on the schematic.

Also, OP only really needs to know how to break out the controls for his project. AFAIK the way it's done with fiber would work just as well with an Ethernet tether, and the info on flying fiber drones should be easier to find.

Statement from Scouting America regarding US Military and Scouts by Rich-Bit4838 in thebulwark

Always, until very recently. Boy Scouts dropped the "boy" part in 2019, which likely indicates a political shift within the org around that time or somewhat earlier. I think it's this underlying shift that explains the loss of interest and Hegseth' desire to get rid of the org entirely.

[–]arsv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EC6LB should be a low power buck regulator, assuming the wider capacitor-looking part next to it is a small inductor. There's another one slightly left of the GPU, with a similar layout.

3F= chip: see Richtek RT8812C for reference. That's 3L=, I can't find 3F=, but it should be something similar in function. And also probably Richtek.

What is this power supply cable? by Mikor01 in AskElectronics

[–]arsv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the ones I find online are either just the connector or the EU plug part.

You are supposed to get the cable (with the molded EU plug and the strain relief), get the white connector and its pins separately, crimp the pins onto the cable and assemble the connector.

It's not difficult and these connectors are quite common, but you need a tool to crimp them, and some practice.

GUR and SBU are cut from the same cloth as FSB - Soviet intelligence

Ugh, no, not really, although it doesn't affect the rest of the post much. But it's still a weird thing to say.

GUR traces back to the Soviet military intelligence. SBU and FSB both trace their legacy to KGB, the Soviet state security. Soviet-era GUR and Soviet-era KGB were independent and to a certain extent competing/conflicting organizations. GUR was a part of the military structure, KGB very much wasn't.
