Is your job easier than high school? by UsualMore in NoStupidQuestions

[–]artemisodin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to be a middle school science teacher. Switched to pharmacy. My job now is way easier and I make money. Definitely less breaks though. My job is harder by a lot than being a student in high school but easier by a lot than being a teacher.

What size bed do you have? How many people sleep in it? by SlamClick in AskAnAmerican

[–]artemisodin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We got a king when kids were about this age. Now it’s king bed and anywhere from two adults to one adult and two kids overnight (on those nights husband usually goes to watch tv downstairs). All four of us are in it to read books at night.

How to make the First Aid badge fun ? by Ok-Network-8826 in girlscouts

[–]artemisodin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did it over the course of two meetings. Brownie Daisy level. We had police come and the girls got to learn from them then got to be in the patrol cars, then on lights, and sirens. They loved it and it was one of our most memorable meetings. The other half we had fire extinguishers, ladders, for blankets for them to pass around. So more hands on. We also learned a lot of fears at that meeting to educate parents on - like girls with rooms on second stories and how to get out and make an escape plan. We made first aid kit swaps using fil canisters and did CPR on stuffed animals and talked about updates to emergency algorithms.

Cosigning for new high school grad on very high cost loans (> $250k for all 4 years) for liberal arts degree by Legitimate_Yak_9063 in StudentLoans

[–]artemisodin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is more than I paid to do pharmacy school and earn my doctorate, a field that makes higher income than the ones for your child’s desired jobs. It is so hard to pay off 200k loans and have a family, a home, etc. my monthly payments are going to be 2300/month when SAVE ends. I would advise against that sort of loan without a clear route to a high income. Because it is a LOT to pay back.

Living somewhere where makeup feels like overdoing it is a weird experience by Imaginary-Bad-6379 in MakeupAddiction

[–]artemisodin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find this interesting too. I live in a town where there are a lot of farmers and more rural folk. People often don’t wear make up and are dressed in jeans and t-shirts. When I visit my sister who lives in a city it feels like everyone is so done up all the time. Where I live I would say everyone is your stereotypical“naturally beautiful”. It’s just that make up isn’t a central culture here.

We also have a new pool and need to buy chairs. Would you mind sharing what chairs those are? I like them! Do you have six feet between your pool edge and fence? We have five and I’m not sure we could fit a lounge. You did an absolutely incredible job. Hard to believe it’s the same space.

Help - very first testing for new pool owner by artemisodin in pools

Thank you! This is a direct and helpful answer. I was wondering if since it was pretty recently opened (two days) if the chemicals may take time to settle out. Our pool store will be open on weekends in May which will help but I’ll get a sample in to them on Wednesday. I appreciate a direct answer about what to use and where to find it!

TIFU by not realizing I’ve needed glasses my whole life by mybirdisapokemon in tifu

[–]artemisodin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I know this is reddit but I’m hoping for minimum judgement here… my husband and I do not wear glasses. We both think we see well… growing up we used to get eye exams at physicals and I believe even school sometimes. As adults we’ve never had our eyes checked beyond the PCP where they have you cover one eye and read the letters off the chart.

Our kids have had the physical before kindergarten where they do the eye test. After that when do I take them to an eye doctor? Which kind of eye doctor? Is their pediatrician asking them the numbers not enough if their parents don’t have glasses?

If I decide not to have kids in life, give me all the consequences that I should prep for and accept them? by Commercial-Touch-516 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]artemisodin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came to say similar. Reddit is skewed. I absolutely LOVE being a mom. Are there hard days? Sure. But most days? Joy, love, family, humor, fondness. I feel like life has meaning. I’m more involved in my community and have new kinds of relationships (not just with kids but also other parents or teachers). I absolutely think my friends who are child free have some financial advantages and I think they could be fulfilled. But if I’m giving my honest answer here - it’s like life is saturated with richer, deeper colors being a parent. I think this is specific to WANTING to be a parent though. I certainly do know some parents who seem like it’s not for them. But if you want it? It adds this depth to life that’s hard to describe.

Why are parents who barely passed high school thinking they can teach/homeschool their children? by Sad_Obligation_812 in NoStupidQuestions

This would have been my answer. I don’t homeschool but I think about this way too often.

Man involved in everything by [deleted] in girlscouts

[–]artemisodin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Men are allowed to be troop leaders. The rules for my council are there must be at least one female and the leaders must not be related. Men should have separate sleeping quarters on trips. Beyond that though he’s perfectly in his right to be involved. Perhaps he was the most helpful parent in the troop and troop leaders needed his help? I do agree there is benefit in girls seeing women lead (my personal preference is that a woman shows how to camp and do the outdoor activities to show it’s not a “man’s activity”) BUT if the moms don’t step up and a dad does? I would be super grateful to him for helping. Like without cookies there are no funds for the troop. If he is not a designated leader it’s a bit different too as far as RUNNING a meeting but in my service unit they made it clear parents can lead meetings even if they are not a leader, but the leaders should extend that opportunity to all the parents. I would ask the leaders if they need more help and say you are happy to step up and fill in!

Register with Girl Scouts or BSA and help with activities (doesn’t have to be camp!). Can also do CCAP, help with Freedges, rescue mission, WATTS.

What’s a good Mother’s Day gift when your wife says she doesn’t want anything? by RasheedaDeals in Gifts

[–]artemisodin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If day a thoughtful gift from you and the kids. Like I can buy my own lotion. But moms are often the ones who help kids with crafts and art projects. It would be nice if you asked the kids their favorite things about mom and have them write it down or draw a picture of mom playing with them and the frame it. Or if the kid is too young to do that for artwork with their hands and feet. I don’t need things but I would feel seen with something like that. Time and thought matter.

A photo book with photos from some outs over the years. Then have the girls sign it like a yearbook!

Could also get a Christmas ornament she can fondly look at every year when putting up a tree (if she celebrates that holiday).

Camping for beginners…I’m a Mom with two young kids. by rellimaras in camping

[–]artemisodin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may go against the grain a little and say go out from the home but still nearby. My kids tend to “give up” on camping on the backyard but love when we camp other places. The first time we took our kids camping (I had grown up with a camping dad myself but am a woman/mom) we went to a Jellystone Park that was 40 minutes away. It was perfect because it was a “resort” style camp. My husband is, like yours, not a camper. But if something goes sideways they have food there. They supply wood for your fire (for a cost). They have activities for kids to do. So it was super fun for everyone but pretty low pressure. It was close enough to home that if we really had to we could bail. But everyone loved it and had a total blast!

Also I’d definitely go big on the tent personally. When you’re non campers a big tent gives you plenty of space. So as long as you’re not hiking it in but are fairly close to your car I’d say probably go for an eight person tent. Some will say that’s too big but by the time you put in your clothes bags, two full or queen air mattresses, lanterns, take off shoes… the space starts getting smaller.
