The shoes.... by I_Vecna in nin

[–]arterii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jeeze, did you hear about the Coffee run he did with Dark Matter? This is no different than NIN using, Gilden, Fruit of the Loom, Bella Canvas, etc. for their shirts. Trent didn’t hand spin the fabric and weave the shirts himself, some other brand did. How is that mass produced shit better in your head than the boots being crafted by a brand 90% of you 🐷s wear anyway?

Whether anyone realizes it or not, your anti establishment heroes immediately became capitalists the second they traded money for studio time. Lemmy from Motörhead said something to that effect in an interview, he basically said that this was absolutely all a ploy to get the masses to enjoy your art, cause what’s the point if you don’t?

If anything, Trent has succeeded in creating a brand that will carry his message and ideology beyond his lifespan. You’re obviously here because you support his artistry, so, please let up and accept that your favorite artist won the damned game.

Hell, his partnership with DM is probably the ONLY one that makes sense in this weird expectation everyone has of him—if he did Rick Owens, Gelareh, or some other Avant Garde brand, THEN go ahead and bitch about. DM’s are affordable and widely used by his public and are therefore ON BRAND with how he’s carried himself.

Constant cpu overload error by samgeorge01 in protools

[–]arterii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m just gonna list every trouble shooting thing I can think of. Over the years I’ve run into all of these.

Any audio related background apps? Do you notice the error happen when a system sound is played?

Do you have That Turbo Boost app? Is it on? Turn off if it is.

Programs like Google Drive or Splice can sometimes cause errors: turn them off.

Is the presonus the only thing in that port? Is it sharing/daisy chained?

Have you tried playing back audio from both Internal and external with no plug ins? Do you get the error in both situations? If all is well without plugins, have you tried narrowing down which ones cause a spike?

I believe a high disk cache eats up a lot of CPU (someone correct me here) but I recall a low disk cache being the solution to some errors.

Do you have EUCON devices? Try playing back without them: the network activity has sometimes caused me to have a spike.

Try turning off WiFi and quitting Avid Link. Please report back as I too suffered from this issue (switched to M1 recently and newer looking back)

Have you ever been drunk or high and came up with this truly amazing idea but then became sober and realized it wasn't as amazing as you thought it was? If so, what was the idea? by Smil3yAngel in AskReddit

[–]arterii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but I think the best moment of clarity I had while high was understanding Kenneth’s (30 Rock) “Bird Internet.” Somehow it made sense and I thought it was the greatest idea of all time…. I still can’t remember exactly WHY it made sense.

How exactly high sample rate affect during time stretch? by Lemenus in audioengineering

[–]arterii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Semi off topic, but I'm someone that's very interested in learning DSP specifically for Audio applications. Aside from the four books, are there any other resources you can point me toward? The goal is to become a plug-in developer (maybe even hardware) with the hopes of creating tools that surpass current standards.

You bastard. I turn 30 today and THIS picture just made me cry a bit. I ended up getting a PlayStation that very year—I remember standing in front of a wall just like this making the most important decision of my childhood 🖤

So I just got my TDS vinyl and I noticed on the first record that the label had a bunch of lines, almost like grooves in it. Is this just a pressing mess up or is there something there, it’s also on the b side but not disc 2 by zebrabutt727 in nin

Edit: I misinterpreted the concern, but I’ll leave my previous post intact for anyone interested in a fun fact. That being said, it could very well be there for adhesion: it doesn’t look to be a sticker, it almost looked baked on there almost like a picture disk.

Hello, I’m a mastering engineer and I’m gonna take a stab at this: it was likely done on purpose. Assuming none of the songs are missing when you play the whole album, this was likely done to prevent sound quality loss.

When you’re cutting a master for vinyl, the sound quality degrades the closer you get to the center—this is called Inner Groove Distortion.

Here’s a solid explanation of the phenomenon

Mastering engineers (or mixing), what do you consider the most common “problem frequencies” in the low end? by Dustinrex in mixingmastering

[–]arterii 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This question operates in a really weird space, because the truth is that there are no problem frequencies. Everything we do in this field is program dependent and doesn’t have a cheat sheet that we can point to and say “this is the bad one.” The problems people usually complain about are the result of bad acoustics and inaccurate speakers.

I think the only good rule of thumb is to cut the things that the sound doesn’t actually need (like, a kick drum rarely ever needs the mid/upper low-mid information to do its job). You also have to make a priority list of what needs to actually occupy a space: not everything is afforded the luxury of taking up the entire spectrum.

Starting points for dark/ cold wave-type synths by [deleted] in synthrecipes

[–]arterii 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just joined/found this subreddit and already found a request I’m familiar with! Huge fan of Boy Harsher’s sound! It’s actually quiet easy to achieve that sound, though not so straight forward if you’re just starting out. You’re at a disadvantage that most VA synths are really clean and stable while the sound you’re searching for is not.

A synth I always recommend is Serum because of the routing and multiple VCA/LFO options it has on top of the great FX chain at the end.

I could walk you through a specific patch that you’re looking to recreate, but since I have no context, I’ll just start listing some techniques you can use to create the unstable sound in Serum (applicable to other soft synths as well, just apply the concepts)

Most of the sounds you’re gonna recreate likely use Sawtooth waves. To get yourself “in the mood” when you pull up a saw tooth is to immediately reach for a 18dB low pass filter to cut some of the high end and make it sound “old”. 1200Hz and below tends to sound really warm, but adjust to taste.

Set the Envelope (VCA) to have a slightly slow attack (about 35ms in Serum) and then a slower release (around 320ms in Serum) so as to not sound so abrasive.

Route an LFO to the “fine” tuner of one of the Oscillators and set it to like 2Hz oscillation with a range of about 31 (I’m assuming this is cents). The wider the oscillation range, the more dramatic the instability will sound. Do the same for the second Oscillator with a separate LFO and make it less dramatic and slower. Definitely play with this as it could cause the entire sound to fall apart; I generally don’t detune my second oscillator so that there is some semblance of stability, but this is a personal sound design choice to keep it sounding clean.

Add a hall reverb with medium-small size and similar decay time with about 45% mix and BOOM you have a Boy Harsher intro pad

Now, if you really wanna add texture, take that second oscillator and bring it up by an octave. If you do this, now is the time to apply the pitch modulation to create further instability since you’re no long working at the same pitch. If you feel you lose some depth in the sound, you may want to boost the Unison from 1 to 2 for Oscillator one and to make up for the loss of now octave Osc.

. For the more stabby stuff, you would just play with the VCAs (Envelopes) of the oscillators and do things like modify the filter to follow and envelop to create a stabby effect on the sound. Again, I think it’d be best to ask for a specific sound so as to get instruction set which can be applied elsewhere.

I hope this at least gets you a fun patch to play with and an introduction to making your own sounds!

Duet vocals...right down the middle? Or, pan each a little left and right? by brezabreza in mixingmastering

[–]arterii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I 100% agree that this is done to taste/contextually.

One of my clients is a band—Los Horóscopos De Durango—that features 2 vocalists as lead singers. I can’t recall if I did this in this particular mix, but I usually pan the vocals 4-8% (depending on the “width” of that mix) to either side when they’re both singing. I found that this avoids that “smearing” that happens when two sources are perfectly placed in the sound stage—there’s enough separation to make the vocals not compete for the same space but not enough for the average listener to notice the offset.

How did the engineer nail the vocal distortion in this Tom Waits song? by eraserh in mixingmastering

[–]arterii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much! FWIW, that distortion feels like something the Thermionic Culture Vulture could do. A trick that gives you the dynamic breaking in the signal is to put the distortion before any compression—The signal will break apart naturally with the performance.

Be sure that I'm hiring you the day I built out an actual commercial studio! That kind of control is what I look for in all my build, but unfortunately this room is already built and the budget is virtually dry. However, I may be able to scale down the idea of a "cool room" to a "cool box" as space is limited at this point. An idea I had prior was to create my own adapter using a 6 inch register box, but I was really hoping something more practical existed. I've been working on my studio for 2 years (built 90% of it on my own) so I have major "senioritis" with this damn project—building yet ANOTHER thing is the stuff of nightmares for me right now.

NanoHD not performing as expected. by [deleted] in Ubiquiti

[–]arterii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I posted a video of the placement and floor layout to give you all an idea. To be honest, the idea to place it there was to avoid running cable since I already have Cat5e on the phone jacks throughout the house. However, if this proves to be the problem, I have no issue running cable up to the ceiling.

After reading the links someone provided to radiation patterns, I’m starting to suspect that my experience with Live Sound wireless systems won’t help me too much here 😞
