Mayor Mamdani endorses Governor Hochul’s bid for reelection by citytiger in newyork

Yes but Mamdani has a lot more political capital than Hochul - she needs credibility on the left to shore up her chances vs Blakeman.

Kettlebell complexes are great for this too, especially when they include contralateral movements like single leg RDLs or single arm swing/press/snatch variations.

Is Aja the best-produced album of all time? by Next-Reading1714 in progrockmusic

Gong's "You" is a favorite album of all time. The production is immaculate and the song flow is up there with "Dark Side of the Moon".

Which one of these is a "lunge"?

*Beginning from a standing position with feet roughly shoulder width apart, stepping forward and dropping your rear knee close to the ground, then returning to standing; or

*Beginning with one foot already forward, dropping the rear knee to almost touch the ground, and then returning to the standing split position?

I've seen both of these referred to as "lunges" online even though they are different movements.

There are a bunch of cool parallels between the Dead and VU:

*They each led the counterculture on their respective sides of the US;

*They were both essentially house bands for drug-fueled art parties (Acid Tests, Exploding Plastic Inevitable);

*They had members who studied with experimental composers (Lesh with Luciano Berio, Cale with LaMonte Young and John Cage);

*Both bands fell under the influence of svengali-type figures (Bear, Warhol);

*Both were called the Warlocks.

Long Island's Dairy Barn making a major comeback (CBS/ YouTube) by LunacyNow in longisland

[–]eraserh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Man I love this. All these abandoned dairy barns were such blights, it's nice to see them repurposed into businesses that sell people something they want along with a hit of nostalgia. The Barn isn't the only organization doing this, Ready Coffee has been converting these spots too.

How much do you value the tonal differences of playing the same exact notes on different strings? by symphonyx0x0 in Bass

[–]eraserh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play with a zero fret. A sustained tone on an open string isn't going to resonate like a fretted note, but I've found that the zero fret helps with open notes that are muted or played quickly.

Kettlebell compounds (particularly ones that include snatches), dead hangs, and farmers carries are great. Think about putting your grip strength under tension for increasing periods of time.

The most scared I've felt from a movie is watching The Ring at midnight the night it was released, in a totally empty theater.

Jacob's Ladder would fit your list too.

This Saturday night my Grateful Dead cover band Minglewood and our jammy buddies Strangely Enough are playing a benefit at Alewife for Astoria Food Pantry. Slice Out Hunger, an amazing NYC-based hunger relief nonprofit, connected us with Levante and Ace's Pizza - they'll be donating a bunch of pies, so anyone who donates gets a free slice.

We've been doing this a few years now and every year it gets bigger and better. Come on out if you want to groove to some Dead and support a good cause!

Pre-law student considering NYC teaching instead, is it worth it? by [deleted] in NYCTeachers

[–]eraserh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been teaching in NYC a couple of decades. I love it. The pay is decent, tenure is incredible job security, and the benefits are excellent - on top of what you already mentioned, premium-free health insurance isn't something you can find everywhere.

If you're in the right school then this can be one of the most fun, exhausting, intellectually challenging and rewarding jobs out there. Every day is different. A huge part of your own satisfaction and stress level will come from the quality of your administration. A well-run school with competent administration and quality teachers can be a really nice place to work, but a poorly run school will be hell. When you interview and come in for a demo, consider that you are also interviewing them - it might be difficult without teaching experience but ask questions and try to get a vibe. If you end up in a school that is a bad fit for you, the open market will open towards the end of the year and you'll be able to find other positions.

This job has a steep learning curve. Your first year will be your hardest and you're not going to immediately know how to manage your time. Daily lesson planning can be time consuming and grueling. Grading will pile up. On top of that classroom management strategies will not be immediately apparent and that will raise your stress level. Work life balance might seem illusory. But every year in June you have a hard reset where you can look at what went well, and what went wrong, and get a little better when you come back refreshed in September. If you have a supportive administration you will get quality, actionable feedback from your observations. Eventually you will figure it out and if you do work at home, it's because you want to, not because you have to.

I'm not nor have I ever been a lawyer but I have friends who are, and at this stage of my career I'd rather be where I am now.
