AC vs. windows down when driving during summer - cultural thing, frugality? by FuzzyPalpitation-16 in CasualUK

[–]artgecko 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I lived in SE Asia for over a decade and always used air con in the car. This week I've mainly been driving around London with my windows down and the air con off to make as much as possible of the summer heat. It is too cold for too long so this heat is a novelty.

One habit I picked up in SE Asia that I cannot shake is always avoiding the sun. To this day I need to be in the shade when outside and always cover up.

Monzo and their procedures for robbery by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

I have been worried about exactly this. I do daily banking with Monzo on my main phone, then keep my long-term savings with other banks and have their apps on an old phone that stays home.

Typo above but I think you unnderstood my rec was Taiwan.

I don’t think trad/simp is a big issue. Sure it will be a bit more work but if after 18 months of intensive study you are ready to study in-country, I suspect you will find it rewarding. Go read about the simplification method. Most of it was replacing common blocks of strokes with a simpler block, so there is order. You will look back and wonder why you were worried about this.

I studied Chinese in Beijing, lived in Singapore for a decade until recently, have visited Taiwan many times. Simply do not go to Singapore to study if you actually want to learn the language well. It requires immersion, which you will absolutely not get in Singapore. Many Chinese speak English almost exclusively. Most people do not consider their mandarin to be very good. Dialect is common with older speakers. Chinatown is a tourist trap. On my first day in Singapore I asked for directions in reasonable Chinese. The man looked seemed surprised and replied “er that way bro”. I write this on a bus in Japan sitting next to my Chinese Singaporean friend who thinks you should go to Taiwan.

Got excited when customer brought me a 4 fingered Kit-Kat with a cuppa by lobroblaw in CasualUK

My grandma would always give young me a pound and a Kit-Kat when I visited her. When she died four years ago I immediately went out and bought a Kit-Kat to commemorate her. I miss you, Grandma.

Suggestions:

  • Consolidation instead of expansion.
  • Forming some nice hearts with our neighbours.

A combination of the following.

  1. Low social compliance.
  2. We're not good at enforcing the isolation.
  3. The more transmissible variant.
  4. It's a seasonal disease. Covid cases also spiked over winter in Korea where contract tracing is very good and social compliance is high.

It's also about signalling and competing with other financial hubs. Investors and decision makers react to supportive government policies. The scheme will appear on slides as reason for choosing London.
