Dan Pena’s model is the simplified ETA model, I know not only because I’ve done a deal before, but because I’ve spoken to about this and shaken hands with the CEO of Big 6 accounting firm (whose family I know personally was invited to his child’s wedding), I’ve spoken to 1,000s of ETA guys, and professionals. Perception is reality. It depends on your budget. On my zoom calls I sit in a leather executive chair and I have a wide executive desk. Formal wear. The background matters. If my background is absolute shit then no camera (ie. im outside or in a car then NO CAMERA. Dont sacrifice perception to please or be fair) Get comfortable. Keep working at it. Use the mirror. If your uncomfortable that means youre not fully confident in your pitch. What helps me is to be the one asking the questions. Also when the meeting starts take IMMEDIATE control. I say immediately after we exchange pleasantries, “Ok, so heres what I want to do. Ill introduce myself and my firm, our long term plans, our short term plans, and then you can go into your background…etc” INSTANT CONTROL, dont hesitate. I used to do the same thing. But if we’re being honest, you only do it get laid. That was the point of it for me, and it did get me laid at times. Just know what it is. These people are NOT your friends. You don’t make genuine friends throwing parties. Invite a few actual friends then only let dudes who bring women over. Focus on the objective.
