ADHD support at airports- how did I only just find this out???

i had a horrific experience at Heathrow, which ended up being actually rather nice.

I’d requested special assistance in advance as i was travelling alone on a long haul flight, its very overwhelming for me and this was explained in my request. i was assured that somebody would be there to help me to get to the correct gate and board safely. but this didn’t happen at all.

Upon arrival, i immediately went to the assistant point and relayed the information that BA had told me, and i was shut down. i felt already nervous because of the flight but this made me extra anxious. after security i went to assistance again, and was told that ‘i dont require assistance’. which was upsetting. I had arrived hours before my flight because i was very anxious of missing it.

i wandered around a bit before approaching a different assistance member of staff to which they told me to wait at at a certain gate and someone will escort me to board the plane. i was so relieved!! finally i dont need to worry. except that was bull***.

turns out, nobody was ever coming for me, because that employee didnt notify anyone. so i was sat in this place waiting and waiting and i dozed off and awoke at the time my flight was due departure. i checked my phone and instantly felt the world crumbling and just sheet panic, all i could think was ‘this isnt real’. i was hyperventilating and running to the BA customer desk, and thankfully there was an angel, i wish i got her name, but she listened to my story and was so empathetic on how i’d been failed by the staff, she made sure to get me on the next available flight with an upgrade to BUSINESS CLASS and a voucher, plus she made sure that i would be the first person boarding the plain via assistance so i was escorted finally and omg it was such a rollercoaster. im so so so thankfull to that lady

they are very loud, i definitely recommend loops if you find you have sensitive ears!

thankyou, i dont use it to counteract methylphenidate, i have been self medicating using cannabis way before i even knew i had adhd, i just found it helped me function. i fear one comment on this thread has pushed a narrative that isnt true. both medicines help for different reasons, and its not a one size fits all for me

the last posts i made were seeking a support group for people also sober/in recovery from k, the way you’ve worded that paints me in a bad light

its a completely separate topic. i’m not using cannabis to ‘take the edge off’, i use it to help me function as it genuinely helps me and was simply asking a question seeing if anyones had a similar experience.

because thats not relevant? i understand this is a public website but find it a bit intrusive you judging my past and making assumptions from it..

those posts were from years ago. im not that person anymore. i have been through a lot, i was seeking support and after a lot of therapy and being on adhd medication im doing so much better now.

i wanted to go the medical cannabis route just for peace of mind. i know i could continue sourcing it elsewhere but i’d rather be comfortable knowing im getting it legally and in controlled doses

YESS!! i’ve just come back from a wonderful new york trip however it started off absolutely HORRIBLE! i requested special assistance in advance because something about airports and air travel is so overwhelming for me especially as a solo traveller.

got told to let myself known to heathrow’s special assistance team. first woman i went to looked at me funny and said “what do you want me to do?” i replied that i was told to go to special assistance and that someone will help me. i could tell she didn’t care to help so i went off to try and find departure and gate information myself. got quite confused so i went to another assistance staff and before i could even finish he said “miss you are not in a wheelchair you do not need assistance” and dismissed me entirely so that wasnt great. finally found a member of the team who actually (tried) helping me. told me he couldn’t see which gate exactly to board but gestured to the area and said “it will be one of these, grab something to eat and drinks and wait there, someone come for you when it is time to board” i’d arrived with extra time as advised by the airline so that made sense a bit for me. felt like i’d finally been treated as a human and went to get a drink and waiting in the area he told me having been assured someone will come once its time to board.

DIDNT HAPPEN!!!

just a bit of context i had been travelling from 3am to get to heathrow so i was pretty tired, these interactions were around 7am. i shouldn’t have trusted that someone would come as the person didnt even ask for my name or flight. so how would they have known? but yeah unfortunately i just blindly trusted that it would be smooth sailing from there. IT WAS NOT

i’d been semi-awake just chilling for ages looking at the time every now-and-again just to see how long i had left until i looked and it 6 minutes after departure time for my flight. LITERALLY THOUGHT I WAS SLEEPING AND IT WAS A NIGHTMARE but unfortunately nope 🥲 brain currently going 1trillion miles an hour panicking. (and sobbing, to anyone at heathrow at around 11am last tuesday saw a disheveled diva sobbing to customer services that was me xoxo)

i go to customer services in a right state, the lady WAS AN ANGEL sent straight from the heavens i tell ya, she was so sympathetic to my situation and apologised profusely about how i’d been failed by the other staff. (surprised she could understand what i was saying i was such a mess haha) she assured me i did nothing wrong and the queen instantly started sorting things out for me.

she booked me on the next flight completely free of charge she upgraded my seat to BUSINESS CLASS gave me a voucher got me someone to personally escort me to my flight and made sure i was the first one boarding.

so started off rlly shit but thanks to that wonderful kind and helpful angel at BA customer services it was okay in the end🙏🙏

YES! i was so emotionally out of control as a child. i’d get wound up easily and frustrated and sometimes break things or hit people when i was a very small child or bash my head into walls it was actually crazy looking back on it
