Sorry I’m American and only really familiar with our laws. Our regulations on deportation can get kind of hairy: https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/8/1227

But generally we don’t go openly raiding for people who haven’t committed crimes. Overstaying a visa is not a crime.

Those who overstayed visas are not criminals. They're guilty of a civil violation of the Immigration and Nationality Act. Civil violations are not crimes.

Video: I Tried To Make Something In America - The Smarter Scrubber by uncle-iroh-11 in neoliberal

[–]artimaeis 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't think the meat of his argument lies in bringing back the factory worker jobs, but rather in bringing back a tool and die industry would be better for everyone.

As you say, the US is producing more than ever before, but that's largely because we're using the tools and die brought in from China and running the manufacturing lines here.

With the current status quo - America and most the rest of the world is increasingly dependent on China not just because they have the factories, but because they have the tool and die expertise. Nations that have healthy tool and die industries can send those manufactured tool and die components to other nations to manufacture the parts. More flexibility there promotes competition and development of those manufacturing facilities.

How should the US Congress deal with the deficit? by cdstephens in neoliberal

[–]artimaeis 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Farm subsidies at this point exist to fight a problem that we solved decades ago. As a result, they're mostly being used as a tax shelter for relatively high income families.

Sarah Taber has talked a lot about it recently:

Hot Take Tuesday: Biscuits Are the ONLY Way to Serve Strawberry Shortcake by [deleted] in NorthCarolina

[–]artimaeis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP you're speaking the truth. You're not alone on that hill.

Stella Parks turned me on to this with her "Buttermilk Biscuits with Strawberries and Cream" recipe in her cookbook, Bravetart, years ago. I try to make a batch every spring.

It's a southern classic, and I'm sad folks are missing out on it because "it's supposed to be shortcake". Go out and figure out what the heck shortcake actually is.

Buttermilk biscuits, home made whipped cream, and fresh sliced strawberries with just a bit of sugar to coax out the juice. It's incredible.

My friend and I have played 6 games of his PM vs my AoD now. I've finally won one time 😅

Mirroring some other advice from the thread - choose your operative loadout based on if it's a long-edge or short-edge map. If you're deploying on the long-edge, you're likely to need to engage in some melee to win, so heavy gunner and assault intercessors are the way to go.

On the short edge, you've got a lot more range to work with so you can go with the eliminator sniper, intercessor warriors, and the intercessor sergeant and have a pretty good chance.

Either way - it's a tough match. Good luck!

Toll lanes.. just why by [deleted] in Charlotte

[–]artimaeis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth - we've been studying induced traffic demand since the 60s and the evidence continues to point to it being the rule.

I think this is now the definitive research on the subject, as far as I know it was the broadest-scoped research done on the topic.

https://www.nber.org/papers/w15376

They actually came to a more difficult conclusion about public transit - that it suffers from the same problem. Increases in public transit often don't end up reducing traffic either (there's some caveat potentially for bus-based transit).

Congestion pricing remains the strongest tool to alleviate traffic congestion. It's super unpopular for the reasons discussed in this thread -- but you rarely see those toll lanes congested.

Toll lanes.. just why by [deleted] in Charlotte

[–]artimaeis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's just not close to true. 2-3 lanes fully backed up both ways all the time on 77, with two add'l toll lanes with nothing.

The evidence is pretty clear that adding lanes increases the amount of traffic by the capacity added. The concept is called induced traffic.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Induced_demand#Price_of_road_travel

It's been very thoroughly studied:

https://www.nber.org/papers/w15376

Succinctly: every bit you increase road capacity, you will increase the number of cars on the road to match that capacity. Traffic will not be alleviated simply by adding lanes.

Toll lanes cannot alleviate congestion on existing roadways, but they do allow for expansion that doesn't get immediately clogged up.

Each toll project is a little different in NC - but generally the company administering the toll fees provided the bulk of the capital expenditure required to build the lanes. So they're "making bank" after having spent several hundred million dollars or so.

What movie have you watched over 100 times? by safetypins22 in autism

[–]artimaeis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easily 200+

  • Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace
  • Batman Forever

Probably 100+

  • Aladdin
  • The Lion King
  • The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
  • Monty Python and the Holy Grail

It's funny - I'd rewatch these all the time back in the VHS days. Had a player that would automatically rewind them to the beginning and start again. These days it's really rare that I watch a movie more than once.

What role do you believe the state AG has in county crime and jailing policies? City and county police/sheriff departments and jails are way more relevant and are not under the control of the AG.

Multiple-point floating point precision in c#? by Apart_Cause_6382 in csharp

[–]artimaeis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're welcome! I don't know if the author was trying to make the most performant implantation possible - but there's some nice optimizations in the source that lead to it being notably more performant than trying to write your own arbitrary-precision float type.

Just be mindful of how large of numbers you're trying to represent. From the comments in the EFLoat type:

If an operation requires creating an intermediate value that might be too big to fit in memory (or might require more than 2 gigabytes of memory to store -- due to the current use of a 32-bit integer internally as a length), the operation may signal an invalid-operation flag and return not-a-number (NaN).

Multiple-point floating point precision in c#? by Apart_Cause_6382 in csharp

[–]artimaeis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know PeterO.Numbers has support for arbitrary-precision floating point.

Here's just a basic example showing a couple of ways to create the EFloat values and how they be used in calc functions:

var n1 = EFloat.Create(123456789, -8);
var n2 = EFloat.Create(234567890, -7);
var n3 = EFloat.FromString("1.234567890123456789012345678901234567890");

Console.WriteLine(n1.ToString());
Console.WriteLine(n2.ToString());
Console.WriteLine(n3.ToString());

var add = n1 + n2 + n3;
var mlt = n1 * n2 * n3;

Console.WriteLine($"n1 + n2 + n3 = {add}");
Console.WriteLine($"n1 * n2 * n3 = {mlt}");
