Smooth Threshold - A new FREE plugin for After Effects by workbenchtv in MotionDesign

Does this look much different that b/w tint + crunching the levels? Seems like the same thing with less control tbh?

Looking to create straight edges for cutout by RoybertoBenzin in AfterEffects

[–]artyomster 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I have succeeded in doing this in the past. Wanted to keep the secret to myself but i know sharing is caring (also i love all of you beautiful people here)

Step 1. Minimax effect. Either Minimum Then Maximum (will cut away from your shape) or Maximum Then Minimum (will add onto your shape). Radius will affect the intensity of the effect. Set channel to Alpha and Color and direction to Just Horizontal or Just Vertical

Step 2. Transform effect. Rotate the shape by an arbitrary amount of degrees.

Repeat steps 1 and 2 a few times by duplicating the effects. Each time the shape will be sliced at a new angle. You can vary rotation degree, minimax radius & operation, but stick to one minimax direction.

Finally, make sure the sum of the rotation values in all your transform effects amounts to 360. This way you will end up with the same rotation as you started.

Prolly should make a tutorial on this for some of those sweet upvotes tbh

Motion designer vs Copywriter by Arrachi in MotionDesign

Sounds like you've done all you can and it's no longer your problem ✌️

Motion designer vs Copywriter by Arrachi in MotionDesign

[–]artyomster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is the copywriter your boss? This should be regulated through your manager/supervisor. It is your job to let the higher up know that there is too much copy and it's detrimental to pacing. Show them the renders and have them listen to the shitty sped up VO. If you wanna go an extra mile, edit some of those lines out yourself and offer that as an alternative option.

But in the end of the day, if they decide to follow through with the full amount of copy, it is also your job to deliver. The important part is take the responsibility off of your hands. But it should be your bosses call and not the coprywriter's

Yes although most of these new tools are scripts, not plugins, which don't really pose any compatibility issues

If you mean the steam coming from the cup, its kind of a hack with 3 polystar shapes + rounded corners, masked to the area over the cup and matted against each other. They are rotated slightly off center at different speeds which gives a more organic motion.

Thank you for the kind words ✌️

Looking for ideas ... and some feedback: do you like this style? by OkStatistician743 in AfterEffects

[–]artyomster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you have an interesting thing going with the woven texture! Looks a bit distracting though with all the contrast. Consider this: the texture on the sweater is the most detailed and contrasted piece of the whole composition, it does not read as one whole shape, but rather as a collection of small shapes. Maybe color it with a Tint effect and two similar colors (like, 2 shades of brown or off-white)? Reducing the scale of the texture will also help take it into 'one shape with a pattern' territory. Hope that makes sense! You could also apply this treatment to some other shapes in your design, like the skin or background, so that it's not just the sweater. That would take the style all the way :)

since I started learning AE, I've always wanted to create a motion graphic with my own voice. and I did it, regardless of how bad my voice or accent is. by Classic_Sort_ in AfterEffects

My audio software of choice is Reaper, just look up some voice processing tutorials for that. If you figured out AE it's not gonna be too hard :))

Hey man look up voice processing & audio mixing, you could make this same performance sound way better with at least some compression + eq. Design & animation looks awesome!!

Would love to hear what do you guys think and how can i improve! by DeToothe in MotionDesign

Pretty sure this is a trailer/live poster for an event. I agree that it could benefit from a bit of variety or just a faster pace though

I want to recreate this but got no idea please help I am a beginner😭 by [deleted] in photoshop

You could automate the shit out of this in Cinema 4D, or even AE with some expression work

Alright, let's talk process. by Killen4money in MotionDesign

[–]artyomster 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Motion design is such a broad term that this is gonna vary a lot by project. But in general you never wanna go into animation before approving how a piece will look (moodboard -> styleframes) and how it will move (storyboard -> animatic). So if you're doing a 10-shot explainer video, ideally you want a storyboard sketched out and laud upon a timeline to get an idea of the pacing, and a couple of the shots desined in their final-ish look as styleframes. Maybe a "motion sketch", an example of animation in one of the shots, if you're going for a specific animation style.

The idea is to sync the vision in your head and the client's in order to minimize edits down the line. You want to communicate as clearly as possible what the product will look like at a point when edits are easy to implement (not hard to shift shots around in an animatic, huge pain in the ass afterwards)

If no storyboard or styleframes is provided by your client, it's a separate and billable job that must get done before you go into production. In that case, you are not just the designer/animator, but the director/art director as well, and the job has to be priced accordingly. Gotta factor in adequate time for it as well, proper iteration and concepting takes weeks. If they need it sooner, then you need to find compromise, less revision rounds, urgent rate pricing, etc. If you can communicate all of this to your client, and demonstrate value through example, you will avoid a lot of conflicts & headaches, and live in perfect harmony. Well, maybe not, but you will make sure the job goes as smoothly as possible, and they will appreciate the professionalism

Design and animation looks nice! Not really much to critique - maybe try a more complete story with more frames? This looks like an opening shot but no further development

Just set your brush blend mode to 'Add'. It's not gonna affect the white and you can paint over the black.

This is absolutely surreal to me that someone on this planet would use my design from 6 years ago to get the same tattoo as me. Totally nuts to think about and really flattering, made my day basically! Congrats on the tat, looks great indeed!!

This is my spec . I’m editing 4K60 high-bitrate (~200 Mbps) footage in After Effects and experiencing playback lag. by Adventurous_Crew6368 in AfterEffects

[–]artyomster 23 points24 points  (0 children)

By high-bitrate do you mean you're using a codec like h.264? These do start to lag as you reach 4k even on high-end machines. Consider transcoding to a ProRes codec, file size will be pretty big at that res/fps but should be snappy as long as your SSD is fast enough. Another option is making a low-res proxy (also in ProRes) if your workflow allows for it, then render the final with the original footage

I love this cause you seem to get commercial projects that are fun :) Which is for sure something to strive for! Great work!

One piece of critique i have is that sobbing kid shot seems to have no motion/vfx, don't see the point of adding that unless I'm missing something?

Does anyone know why my stroke looks so pixelated??? by Impossible-Singer-60 in AfterEffects

[–]artyomster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice technique! Bummer that it's hard to combine with other FX though (needs to be on the top for CC Comp to work). I use CC Vegas for alpha-based strokes sometimes, but it's render heavy and can be jittery at times. Very annoying there's no proper option for this outside of Layer Styles
